The Talking Walls

Off the coast of Maine is the island of Grand Pins. There you’ll find the Baleine family mansion. It’s a centuries old house that is really quite haunted. Joanne and Kevin found the house while on vacation. The price was just too good to resist. Now they’re living with angry spirits who have their own agendas. They must make peace with the ghosts or they will likely join them.

Joanne and her husband found the house of their dreams on Grand Pins Island, Maine. Their first night in their new home, Joanne heard someone talking. She saw something moving in the shadows. The activity escalated rapidly, but her husband refused to believe. Can Erik Rivard and Sadie help Joanne before she loses her marriage or her mind?

Blurb:

“Erik, it hurts.” My eyes opened slowly and closed again. In the dark room, I fought my way upstream from a blissful dream. Sadie rocked left and right restlessly. I guessed that a nightmare had her talking in her sleep.

Gently, I shook her to bring her out of it.

“No!” she protested.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, growing annoyed at being waked.

“You’re hurting me!” she insisted.

“I’m not doing anything!” I objected.

81YHjVfbSlL._SL1500_“My hair,” she cried. “You’re pulling my hair!”

I reached for the small lamp that had been placed on a wooden chair beside the bed. Blinking to adjust to the light, I rolled back to look at Sadie. She was sitting beside me on the bed, glaring at me.

“Sadie, I didn’t touch your hair,” I assured her. ”

“Your arm was under me. Why were you yanking my hair?”

“I didn’t!”

She turned to look at the pillow where strands of hair lay across the white linen.

“Look at this! It was tugged hard enough to pull out!”

“Sadie, I think we have company,” I spoke softly.

“Who?” she whispered anxiously.

“I have no idea, but this is not a good spirit.”

“I’m afraid, Erik.”

“Yea, me too,” I admitted.

“Please leave the light on,” she pleaded and I readily agreed.

Eventually we drifted off into sleep again. Sadie lay on her back with my useless arm beneath her and the other wrapped protectively over her. If the spirits returned, they didn’t wake us.

When I opened my eyes again, the sun was up; struggling to shine through dull, gray clouds.

The first book follows Bree and her life as she fumbles her way through letting down walls and letting love in. This novella has a lot of laughs and a little drama and introduces the readers to the rest of the characters leading into the second book, which builds up suspense for the third and final installment. These novellas will appeal to plus size or curvy women everywhere, especially those who enjoy books in the BBW (big, beautiful women), chicklit and women’s fiction genres. Enjoy an excerpt:

“Okay, okay,” I grumble, reaching my arm out, blindly trying to locate my phone, my head still nestled beneath the covers, with no intention of surfacing any time soon.

Whoever is trying to call me better have a damn good reason for doing so. I’m enjoying my sleep in, knowing I don’t have to start work until seven o’clock tonight. The phone ringing is beginning to drive me insane.

‘Ah ha!’ I finally find it hidden amongst last night’s clothes haphazardly thrown on the floor. Pulling my hand back under the covers, I answer the phone. “What?” I grumble.

“Bree, tell me you’re not still in bed?”

“Of course I’m still in bed, it’s still morning,” I snap at Elise. I’m not a morning person, never have been. It takes at least two cups of coffee to get me going and, of all people, Elise should know that. Especially if she wants me to be a little nicer right now.

“No, honey, it’s one o’clock, and would you like me to remind you that it’s Friday?”

“Of course I know it’s Friday, I’m singing at Skyla’s tonight. Now, let me get back to sleep.” She’s still on the other end of the phone, but there’s only silence, and I know she’s waiting for something. But what?

Then it hits me.

Kayli Winchester is a dirt-poor girl living out of a hotel, forced to be the parent for a drunken father and teenage brother who she’s desperate to keep in school. Not that they see her coming…

Thinking she’s been working under the radar, Kayli has no idea The Academy has been watching and taking notice. Now a team that needs her skill has offered her a way out of her predicament and it’s her last chance: work with them, or face jail time. Kayli resists at first, but slowly the boys reveal they can be trusted. With Marc, the straight man, Raven, the bad-boy Russian, Corey and Brandon the twins as different as night and day, and Axel their stoic leader, there’s a lot Kayli can learn from these Academy guys about living on the edge of the law. Especially when the job they offer her is more than any of them bargained for. After it’s done, the hunters have become the hunted and their target is now after Kayli. The Academy boys do their best to keep her hidden, but a thief like Kayli will never sit still for long.

Meet an all-new Academy team in Thief, the beginning of the Scarab Beetle series.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Men are brilliantly stupid.

For one thing, guys carry the most cash with them anywhere. Didn’t anyone ever tell them cash was dead?

I nestled myself in one of the side branches of Citadel Mall. I picked my way through a Claire’s but the lights were too bright reflecting off the sparkling plastic and crystals of the teeny bopper jewelry and handbags. I ducked into a shoe store where the lighting was dimmer and the window wasn’t as obstructed. Waiting was the hardest part.

My favorite place to find dumb guys with lots of cash was the mall. Always fairly crowded on a weekend; I could count on at least a couple of twenties for every wallet I temporarily borrowed.

I never kept all of it. Forty to sixty dollars at the most. Not enough to bother reporting to the cops. I didn’t mess with credit cards, or bother with selling ID cards. That’s the kind of crazy stuff that gets you sent to prison. I always left the wallets and the rest of the leftovers tucked away in the food court and on benches where management would see it and find the owner. That way, the people wouldn’t have to get new ID, which is a huge hassle.

And they never suspected a thing. All they saw when I accidentally bumped into them was batting eyelashes and as much cleavage as I could muster the absurdity to expose without dry heaving.

Betrayal. It’s an ugly word, and virtually everyone has experienced it in one form or another. The question is, what do you do about it? Seek revenge? Recover and go on? Or allow rage and despair to destroy everything you’ve ever worked for?

In his riveting debut novel, author and longtime businessman John Wendell Adams details the story of a man caught in an ugly web. Jack Alexander has landed a great job as a divisional director of sales in a Chicago-based IT company. Hired to turn around a regional disaster, he is rewarded with additional responsibilities. The problem: his vitriolic new boss, a co-worker’s unwanted advances, and their secret conspiracy.

Fired from his job, forced to confront both his present and his past, Jack goes through an emotional tailspin before he is able to reconcile what has happened to him. Eventually, he’s hired as a vice president with a much larger firm. When his new company decides to acquire his old one, Jack comes face to face with the two people responsible for his earlier demise. Meanwhile, he uncovers some illegal activities that could put the acquisition at risk.

Is this the time for revenge, to right the wrongs that have been done to him? What should he do? Is it possible to act effectively and also with integrity when confronted with those who compromised his marriage, his career, and his sense of self-worth?

Adams comments, “I have worked in the corporate world all my adult life and have witnessed or personally experienced the highlights and moral failings that come with it. To put it simply, if you’ve ever experienced betrayal in the workplace, in love, or in a family, this book is for you.”
“Betrayal is simply a stunning, must-read work that will transform hearts that are open to receive the life lesson within its pages.” ~ Reader Review

EXCERPT

If Jack’s own father had provided him even a little visibility and exposure to life as he grew up, Jack would have thrived on it. Jack came to realize that his dad just didn’t have what was needed to be a “real” father.

“I found out where your father‘s working. I’m sure he’d like to see you.” Jack’s mother’s comments caught him off guard. Jack was eight years old when his mom and dad separated and divorced. The fact that his father wasn’t coming home any more affected Jack greatly. In his home, their living room windows faced the street. For several weeks after his dad left, Jack would stand in the window every evening looking out and waiting for his father to come home. So, when Jack’s mother told him and his three sisters that they could go see their dad, he was elated. Looking back, he was more affected by the divorce and not seeing his father than Jack’s sisters. Also, for some reason, Jack thought he had done something to cause the break up. No one ever told him that, but it was still somethMEDIA KIT Book Covering he struggled with. Jack needed the protection and security of his father. He wanted him to guide him through life and introduce him to the things his neighborhood buddies experienced. Jack hoped that his dad would teach him how to hit a baseball, ride a bike, swim, or make a snowman in the winter.

“Can we go see him today?” Jack asked his mother.

“No, I’ll set it up with your dad and then you and your sisters will be free to go see him.”

It was a cold, snowy winter day. The snow had been falling for two days. It was the kind of snow that would be great for having a snowball fight or making a snowman. None of that mattered to Jack. He just wanted to go see his dad. So off they went; Jack and his sisters.

His two older sisters, twelve and thirteen, were given instructions by Jack’s mother on where they were to go and how to get there. It must have been a fifteen- minute bus ride but it felt like hours. As they got off the bus and walked to their Dad’s office, all Jack could think of was seeing him and asking when he was coming back home.

“Hey, it’s great to see you kids. How did you get here? How are you doing? Did you have lunch?” Jack’s dad seemed so happy to see them. He introduced them to all of his co-workers. He was beaming.

“These are my three daughters and this is my son Jack,” he said. “I had to name him after me.” Jack was so proud. He felt like the son of a President. His dad made Jack feel great.

After all the introductions, he sat down with them in a conference room and talked to them for quite a while.

“So, how’s school? Are you getting enough to eat? What about your homework? Are you going to bed on time every night?” Jack’s dad was so attentive to them.

Finally, their time with him was rapidly coming to an end. He had to go back to work. Jack had been saving his question and he felt like he needed to ask it now.

“So when will we see you again? And when are you coming back home?” Jack blurted out.

Jack’s dad didn’t answer for a long time. He just looked away. Then finally he said,

“Look, I have to get back to work. Why don’t you come over to the place where I’m living and we can sit and talk for a much longer time?” Jack thought about that for a moment and then asked,

“Ok, but then will you tell us when you’ll be coming back home?” His dad looked away again before he answered,

“Sure, we can talk about it then.”

He wrote down his address and phone number for them. They agreed on a time to show up at his house on the upcoming Sunday right after church. Before they left he hugged each of them. He waited to hug Jack last. Looking back, Jack sensed something in his hug that he didn’t quite understand until much later.

From “Man of Her Dreams:”

“Oh, good grief,” said a woman’s voice from nowhere. “The old ‘naked in public’ dream. You sure this is him? This is the man in my dreams? Where’s the wild mare he rides across the moor, and the kilt, and the windswept hair, and the—all right, so he’s got the washboard abs, and the…the rest of the package. But still…”

“The spell doesn’t lie, Sis,” responded another woman’s voice from nowhere. “This is the man of your dreams. Anyway, a kilt? I think it’s time you got rid of that Braveheart poster. The symbolism of his dream is obvious, according to your Psych 101 textbook I doubt you ever read—about as obvious as your man riding a wild mare. Does your kilted dream lover whip the mare into a lathered frenzy?”

“He d-doesn’t…you’ve got a dirty mind. So what’s this guy’s problem? A fear of being locked out of motel rooms?”

The second voice sighed. “He’s unhappy with his life and searching for something better. Being naked means he’s broke, so don’t count on lavish gifts or expensive honeymoons from this guy. How many of the good catches had insomnia, for the spell to settle on this loser

On the Isle of Sound and Wonder Blog Tour

Don’t miss the rafflecopter at the end of the post.

Review:

I was given a copy in exchange for a fair review.

Although I generally am not a fan of Steampunk, this particular story held my interest far more than the last time I tried to read within this genre. It is most impressive and an excellent story.

This story was a wonderful adaptation of Shakespeare’s The TempOTISW big buttonest. Although there were many similarities to Shakespeare, the author has added their own unique style of Steampunk to make it similar but not the same.

The characters are very well developed and the reader will find it difficult to not become emotionally involved with even the evilest of the characters.

My favorite character is Mira, the heroine of the story. She is strong and takes charge of a situation simply for helping those who need it.

The addition of classic Steampunk earmarks such as an airship, automaton, and other instruments gives this story a unique twist. It is by far the best I have read in this genre.

This author, although new to the writing world, has the talent to become a great author simply by virtue of this most excellent story. I give this story a 5 star rating.

Cover_NowhereToRunThe ghosts of those we love never leave us. They live on in our hearts but break them too, Lily thought as she flipped the sign on the door of the Higgstown Diner from “Open” to “Closed.” Then she sank wearily onto a stool at the counter, finally at the end of the workday. Now she could let loose the heaviness weighing her down. Hot tears stung her eyes and she let them. It was OK. There was no one around to witness her breakdown. She rested her head in her hands and heaved with sobs.

“Sara, please talk to me. Give me a sign you’re still around,” Lily said to the air. “I miss you so much.” More tears washed down her cheeks. It had been three months since her sister’s death, and there was still no escaping Sara’s ghost. Even the chipped Arborite counter where she now sat, with the wonky red upholstered stool that swiveled just a little too much to the right, brought back memories. Lily could see her older sister as plainly as if she were standing in front of her now, black hair piled high in a bun and that blue eye shadow she was so fond of. Lily smiled through her tears.

Sara had been a whiz at the grill, whipping up orders faster than Lily ever could. God, how long had the diner been a part of their lives? More than twenty-five years, she guessed. They were just kids when their mother, Nancy, bought the place—Lily, seven, and Sara, twelve.

A creak came from the back of the diner. Lily lifted her head to listen. Another small groan of the floorboards. Could Sara be giving her a sign?

“Sara?” Lily slid off the stool.

A tall, dark figure loomed in the doorway.

Lily froze, her heart near exploding. “What do you want?” she choked out in a thin voice.

He stepped nearer. “Open the register.” His voice was a deep whisper.

A balaclava hid his face; the seams of a dark gray coat strained over a thickly muscled physique. He aimed the gun in his right hand at her chest.

Her feet seemed rooted to the floor.

“I said, open the register.”

The man moved close enough for Lily to catch his scent—a mix of sweat and cheap aftershave. He shoved her forward, snapping her from her stupor, and followed as she made her way behind the counter to the cash register.

A glowing red light caught her attention. She hadn’t turned off the coffee maker! In one quick movement, Lily grabbed the pot’s plastic handle and launched the scorching brew at the woolen knit of the intruder’s balaclava. The gun landed with a thud between his booted feet as he clawed at the steaming mask plastered to his face.

Now was her chance. Lily shouldered past him to the front door. Her fingers, thick and clumsy with panic, fumbled as she tried in vain to turn the two deadbolt locks. She ordered herself to calm down. Take a breath. C’mon, you can do this, she told herself, but her heart jackhammered in her chest, and her ears pulsed with the rush of blood behind them.

Suddenly, a face appeared on the other side of the glass front door of the diner, sending Lily backward, nearly tripping over her own feet.

The stranger on the other side of the door took her in. A look of confusion flickered across his face. Then, as if coming back to himself, he yelled, “Hurry. Unlock the door!” The cold night air whipped his dark hair wildly around his face. His pale blue eyes locked on hers.

Panic had hijacked her brain. She didn’t know what to do. He could be an accomplice.

Enjoy an excerpt:

The wave was perhaps the greatest in height they’d ever seen. Later, John was sure they’d recount it as being of tidal proportions, hyperbolic as they always were when it came to surfing expeditions. But in truth, he wasn’t even sure how to approach its vastness; he caught the edge of the big, rolling force in an awkward, unbalanced maneuver, yet he evened himself out at once, rising up into a standing position, and coming through the tube with precision.

Zak waited for John to reach their squatting spot once again, then greeted him with a seated bow from atop his board. “Nicely done. But that was great luck, catching a swell that size. Next one’s mine.”

They didn’t have to wait long. The pair ignored a series of smaller waves that rolled past (though, by a normal day’s standards, they would have been worth riding), until a massive upsurge formed within the surf, collecting all of the surrounding water to join its force. Zak was gone before John could give him any encouragement.

John held up his unit, readying its hologramera to capture Zak’s performance. He pressed “record,” but then, a loud beep emanated from underneath him, coming from his surfboard. The sonar screen at the top of his board lit up, depicting a large incoming vessel approaching Zak’s position. John looked up again, but noticed that Zak was alone – there were no other surfers or boats nearby.

REVIEW: “Astonishingly imaginative and thoughtful. Aegis Rising sets a festive narrative table and makes the reader eagerly anticipate a sequel.” ~ Samuel F. Pickering, Professor Emeritus of English, University of Connecticut & Inspiration for the film Dead Poet’s Society ~

Sprinting like a madman, he soon reached his house. Smoke and flames shot out from the roof as he barged through the main door. Fumes and ashes began to choke his lungs. He coughed as he called out to his family.

No answer.

Terrified, Mokun tore through his abode. His eyes teared up so terribly from the smoke that he could hardly see where he was going as the unbearable heat weighed down on him. His heart pounded as he struggled to breathe. He couldn’t find his family anywhere. Then a thought struck him: the cellar! They may have panicked and sought safety below ground.

He ripped off the hem of his tunic and tied it around his nose and mouth. The smoke was so thick he was forced to feel rather than see his way to the cellar. He found the door to the cellar opened and tripped over the steps in his haste, falling to the ground. He pulled himself up and called out again to his loved ones. He got no response and stepped forward. His foot bumped against something and he jumped back.

With growing dread, he knelt down in the darkness, squinting to make out three huddled shapes. He froze in horror, oblivious to the danger around him. His five-year-old daughters were huddled against their mother, and his wife had her arms wrapped around the twins. They didn’t move.

About the Author:

With the publication of Aegis Rising in her senior year of high school, she was surprised by the abundance of time that magically appeared right after graduation. She plans to use this newfound resource to expand the arc of the Aegis Series. Her future plans include studying Cognitive Science at university and helping youths in developing countries realize their potential through the non-profit organization, Aegis League (www.aegisleague.org)

When not devouring a book or writing one, S.S.Segran can be found standing behind the cauldron of life, stirring a potion made up of chores, parkour, gaming, drawing, horseback riding and—having recently jumped off a perfectly fine airplane at fifteen thousand feet – perhaps skydiving.

Legends never die; they just go into hiding …

Sixteen-year-old Emily Haven, heroine of the girls’ hockey team at Lindsey High, has spent her young life keeping two secrets: her rapidly deteriorating home life and the seemingly supernatural power that makes her a star on the ice. Lost amidst creatures of fantasy and legend, she is forced to confront the demons of both her past and future to unravel the riddle of the mysterious boy and embark upon a journey to uncover long forgotten histories and the dark, cloaked figure in the shadows behind them all. Caught between opposing forces of a war she does not understand, Emily must find new strength within herself and, above all, the will to remember her friends.

Excerpt

“Hello?” she whispered, but she couldn’t hear her own voice over the low whine that was building in her head. The knowing hadn’t abandoned her. It hadn’t abandMEDIA KIT Haven Lostoned her at all. If anything, it was stronger than it had ever been.

Her muscles spasmed with the force of it. The whine in her head rose to a crescendo that made her feel as though she’d become some kind of weird human tuning fork. She began to shake uncontrollably, and the floor seemed to sway and heave beneath her feet, like the deck of a ship on rough seas.

She fell to her knees in front of the mirror, unable to tear her eyes away from the strange boy with the pony-tail and the torn and ragged clothes. She could see every minute detail of his attire, from the thick red and black thread that had been used to mend his jeans and jacket, to the filth and tarnish on the old-fashioned fastenings.

He reached out toward her, and as he did, her own reflection in the mirror winked out. Only his face stared out of the dusty glass. His eyes were full of hope and sadness, and seemed the eyes of a much younger child. Those eyes spoke of suffering and loss, and Emily’s heart called out in recognition. She thought she saw the flicker of flames behind the boy, and then she was reaching out to him as well.

Their fingers met. She clasped his in her own, feeling their warm, rough reality, and wanting to give comfort as much as receive it. Such a simple action. Such a mundane, human gesture. And with that ordinary decision made, two worlds changed forever.

“Yes,” she whispered, and watched as the breath of that word fogged the glass between them, spreading until it filled the world with a cloudy, white mist.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good Journey
A clay tablet, a scroll of parchment, a clean sheet of paper, a blank computer screen—all these things are the void. They are cold, silent, and without any form that matters. They exist, in some sense, only because we exist. We can compare their emptiness to our own reality, and thereby understand that they are nothing.
Then, without warning, matter begins to fill the empty spaces. Knives, ink, digital bits—these things blemish the purity of the void. They draw letters, which make sounds, which form words, which link together to create sentences, then paragraphs, and finally stories. Worlds are created, not in an instant with a colossal big bang, and usually not even in seven days. The creation is slow, painstaking, and wrought with peril.
But in the end, ultimately, it is worth it. This is magic, after all, of the purest kind; it is magic born out of blood, sweat, and more than a few tears. All other uses of that word, however attractive or well defined, are simplifications of that single, unalterable truth.
You build your world, one brick at a time. Some of these bricks have been used before, in other worlds, put in place by another’s hand. They’ve been saved, tucked away in a forgotten corner, just waiting for their time to come. They are taken out, polished, and re-purposed in some new and unique way.
Here, we shall build a wall; there, we shall place another. Can you feel the cobbles beneath your feet? Can you smell the horses as the carriage goes by? Stand right there and let the warmth of the late summer sun fall upon your face, for all too soon the harvest will come, and you shall reap the fruits of your labors.
A beam goes up for the next building. It springs up from the ground, seemingly fully formed, and shines with a dazzling brilliance that is the sole providence of the new, unused idea. These beams are fragile things; they must be nourished, fed, and cared for, lest they die and melt away, to be replaced by more mundane materials. Children know how to care for these, but you have nearly forgotten.
Slowly, other souls, born from the depths of your imagination, begin to populate this world. At first, they are as thin and flat as paper dolls, and you fear that, in a moment, they will be caught up and carried away on the winds of change that blow endlessly across the landscape of this place. Gradually, however, they grow denser. Soon, they have desires of their own—voices of their own—thoughts of their own—and they will not sit idly by and wait for your fingers to tell them what to do. They go on, rushing blithely ahead, as blissfully unaware of the fate that awaits them as are all of the gods’ creatures.
And before you know it—before you’ve even had so much as a chance to lay down your pen and take a sip from your ever present teacup—these souls, children of your mind, have lifted you up and taken you away.
And all you can do is hold on to whatever is at hand and let them carry you away.
The sights you see are no longer carefully crafted artifacts of your own devising; now, they are as rough and ragged as any landscape on earth. They are dirty, and flawed—full of surprises, and full of beauty.
You watch, horrified and fascinated, as the world you created spirals inexorably out of your control. The neat lines and careful masonry is destroyed, and the children must find their own way to rebuild a new world from the ashes of the old.
You wait, holding your breath, for the next catastrophe to befall your creation. You cheer when your sons and daughters achieve feats of which neither they, nor you, truly believed they were capable.
And then the dusts settles.
You put down your pen, take another sip of tea, and begin thinking about doing it all again, only this time, it will be different.
This is the writer’s journey.
