BLURB:

Inspired by a true story, The Soul Retrieval is a suspenseful tale of love, loss and healing which follows traumatized southern beauty Henrietta Clayborn as she moves between her home in a small South Carolina town and the New Mexico Native American reservation whose spontaneous healings keep drawing her physician husband back. Tortured by her awful secrets, Henrietta struggles to thrive in either locale, but it is her unlikely friendship with Joe Loco––an eccentric Native American mystic with an Elvis fetish and a gift for healing––that shows her the way to be whole again.

Set in the late 1950s, The Soul Retrieval is richly woven with spiritual insights but also deadly secrets, forbidden healings, a murder mystery, stunning scenery and an unforgettable cast of characters.

A story of transcendent and inspiring power that is both entertaining and enlightening, readers will be cheering for the uptight woman from South Carolina to push through her fears of the forbidden as she searches for truth and healing, faces great obstacles on the frontier of self and ultimately becomes more than she ever thought possible.

Excerpt

After finishing the second nocturne, he looked up at her. “You know that I’ve been researching the high incidence of spontaneous healings here, right?” Jeff was both a lead physician and medical researcher at the Medichero Indian Hospital. He reached for a pack of cigarettes from the pocket of his short-sleeved white shirt.

“Uh-huh,” Henrietta said. She barely heard what he said. How am I going to get into it? How am I going to tell him? She had asked herself these questions at least a million times. She picked up a pen and notebook from the coffee table, trying to keep her hands busy.

Jeff smoked in silence a moment before continuing. “There’s more to it than even I imagined.”

“More to what?” she asked. She absently doodled on the page without looking up. How am I going to tell him?

Jeff blew smoke. “The spontaneous healings that I’m so interested in … the medicine men here seem to be doing something real to affect the recoveries.”

Now he had her attention. “They are?” She looked at him. “Like what?”

Instead of answering, Jeff got up and turned toward the bay windows that cradled the piano in a small alcove off the living room of the doctor’s cottage. His silhouette against the bright morning light was a man-shaped eclipse, his muscled edges luminous and blurred by the smoldering tobacco. It gave him an unworldly appearance, and Henrietta was reminded about how often she felt like an outsider here, and even back home.

Chapter 21: A magician and a snowball

The magician continued to laugh—louder now—as he turned again towards the large chunk of ice hurtling towards him. “What?” He snarled defiantly at the party. “Already run out of your best tricks, and reduced to throwing snowballs at me? And here I thought you were getting interesting…”

He started waving his wand in a small circle, slowly at first and then increasing in speed and size. As he did this, a green fire emanated from his wand and grew until it matched the shape and form of the incoming ice ball perfectly. “Oh, no!” he cried mockingly. “Here I am with nothing but a little match to fight your big, bad snowball! However shall I defend myself?”

As the ice ball began its downwards arc toward the human, he started to twirl his staff, which began to glow with an electric purple shimmer. Oraweth grimaced when she saw the purple glow, because she knew it meant he was going to cast one of his more powerful attack spells: a magical bolt that could slice through individual shields and had required all three elves to focus on a combined shield with the help of the skeletons to block it. But this combined shield took a lot of energy to create, and they were not certain they had the strength left at this point to make one that was strong enough to protect them.

The days had turned warmer and the rains had come to a stop. The fields were planted with the food that would allow us to survive, and everyone anxiously awaited the first harvest of lettuce and beans. Anything other than radish and turnip soup seasoned with a little green onion and boiled squirrel.

I walked past one of the fields and waved at the boys. Two of them carried rifles and several others had sharp spades. Those with the rifles were scanning the edges of the field making sure no rabbits came in to eat the precious crops. Those with spades walked along each row, making sure no moles or other burrowing varmint was making itself at home.

The boys waved back and went back to their vigilant sentry work.

I shook my head as I thought about what Lexi would say if she had seen this. She was afraid of guns. She never grew up around them and did not like them. I didn’t care one way or another. To me, they were just another tool. One I grew up with, but found no particular joy in using. It was like a hammer. Lexi was afraid of them and didn’t want one in the house, so I acquiesced to her demand.

But now they were needful things. The right tool for the right job. At night, the dogs were set free in the field and the snares were set along the edges. But in the daytime, a stray rabbit taken with a .22 meant not only saving our crops, but more meat in our stew.

Excerpt:

In a secret chamber deep in the bowels of her fortress, Synicia paced the length of the stone room, the vein dangling in her fingers. For the past hour she had been trying to think of a new experiment to obtain its power. Floating overhead, a conjured sphere of light painted her moving shadow on the cracked, dusty wall. Her high-heels clicked on the flat rock tile, the long dress rustled with every pass around the area.

Holding the vein aloft and using various incantations had produced nothing. She then tried to pierce it to release some of the blood for a potion, but that method only resulted in broken knives. Trying to tear the vein with magic proved futile as well. The shard of earth had ripped the thing from Anessil’s body, but the weapon turned to dust the instant Synicia removed the vein from its tip.

What could she try next? She had to have this power. Fantasies of increasing her status and conquering more lands swam in her head. Synicia had no idea who Anessil was, nor did she care; she only desired the woman’s level of skill and strength. But the stupid vein taunted her. It laughed at her misfortune. It teased of unimaginable might she would never have.

Synicia cried out in rage and threw the vein against the wall. It hit with the sound of a wet plop and lay on the floor. Throwing herself on the ground, she scooped up the vein and shoved it into her mouth. Fighting off nausea and dry heaves, she swallowed the thing and sat still, waiting for something miraculous to occur.

An Interview with the author:

1. How long have you been writing?

Hello to everyone, and much thanks to you for having me on your site! I’m no spring chicken anymore so my memory is fuzzy, but I believe I started dabbling in short stories when I was in 5th grade, so about 10 years old. I wrote some things for school, but I enjoyed it so much I started writing at home as well.
2. How long have you been a published author?

My first novel, Tears for a World, was released on 7 November 2014.
3. What titles do you have available?

This book is the first in the Lonely World Trilogy, so unfortunately it is my only title out at the moment. But I’m hacking away at the second, Tears for Love, and the third in the series, Tears for Life. I hope to have the second out by early summer. The entire trilogy should be out this year.
4. What made you choose the subject of this book?

As for the subject of deities or higher powers, many people have asked the question of what’s out there. And if faced with it, how will they react, especially if that higher power has the capacity for evil? This overall topic has always interested me, so I decided to throw it into the plot and have a young 16-year-old protagonist discover the answers for herself.

5. Do you have any new titles coming soon?

Besides the Lonely World Trilogy, there are always ideas swimming in my mind about new projects. Unfortunately, I barely have time to concentrate on my current books, so starting a completely new novel or series will have to wait. But I do keep notes on what pops into my head so I will be able to use the material later.
6. What is your favourite genre and why?

Fantasy has always been my favorite, although I have read many other genres and enjoyed them just as much. There’s something exciting about stepping into a completely foreign world with unique beings and beasts, and then seeing vast adventures unfold in them. Fantasy allows authors to express their wildest imagination, and readers with equally impressive imaginations to enjoy the experience.
7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process?

Hearing someone say they enjoyed your story. At first, writing is something personal and I feel thrilled doing it for myself, even if no one ever reads the darn thing. However, when you do decide to put a story out there, it’s cool to hear that someone was actually entertained by your hard work and didn’t laugh it off.

8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why?

Lloyd Alexander would by my choice. This award-winning author was my hero as a child. His fantasy stories enthralled me to the point where I would have dreams about his books! His resume is quite impressive. How amazing would it be create a new story with this gentleman’s talent? May he rest in peace.

9. Where can readers find you on the web?

I am on Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, and Goodreads.

Feel free to include your latest release/promo, and any additional info you might like included! Thanks so much for being my guest.

Excerpt:

When Nora swung open the restroom door, she nearly ran into Hiram Knepp before she saw him in the shadowy hallway. He was leaning against the wall as though he’d been waiting for her to come out. He shifted quickly, so he was blocking her exit.

“Looking good,” he murmured with a devilish smile.

Nora somehow contained her irritation. “Hiram,” she said with a curt nod. “If you’ll excuse me—”

“Oh, there’s no excuse for you today,” he quipped as his gaze roamed the length of her. “You and Hooley are as mismatched as a thoroughbred racehorse yoked to an ox. What do you see in him, anyway?”

Nora didn’t try to break past him, because that would bring her into contact with the arm he’d planted against the wall, right at her chest level. “You’re entitled to your opinion,” she muttered, “but—”

“But I’m really here with a proposition,” Hiram interrupted. “A business proposition, that is.”

As he moved closer, Nora had nowhere to go but backwards, into the deeper shadow. As her back found the wall she instinctively bent one leg up, so her knee was in a strategic position. She remained silent, making Hiram talk while she figured out how to get out of this trap he’d set.

“Several friends have told me how excited they are to be consigning items to your new store,” Hiram continued. “What a shame it would be if your business went belly-up. Most small businesses—especially those owned by women—fail within the first year because they’re undercapitalized. I’d like to help prevent that.”

I just bet you would, Nora thought, but she kept her mouth shut. Anything she said would give him more ammunition.

Hiram smirked. “Miriam Hooley and Andy Leitner can attest to that,” he stated. “They couldn’t keep their doors open if they didn’t have a benefactor who owned their buildings and relieved them of all that overhead. So what if I bought my barn back?” he asked. “What if I became your silent partner, Nora?”

“No way,” she muttered. “I don’t care to pay the sort of interest you’d expect.”

Hiram’s chuckle echoed in the small hallway. “Nora, my dear,” he protested in a silky voice. “You misunderstand my—”

The door to the mens’ room swung open so hard it hit the wall.

“The lady said no, Knepp,” Luke snapped as he stepped into the hallway. “I’ve got zero tolerance for snakes, so you’d better slither back into your hole. Got it?”

Hiram backed away from her. His jet black goatee rippled with his grin as he pointed first to Nora and then to Luke. “There’s just no accounting for taste, I guess,” he said with a shake of his head. “If you care to reconsider my offer, Nora, my door’s always open.”

BLURB: Most of us are familiar with Jesus’ parents, Mary and Joseph, and Jesus’ purported spouse, Mary Magdalene. But what about Jesus’ siblings? What role did they play in early Christianity? Contemporary Jesuit and renowned religious historian Nicholas Branson is about to find out…and the answer will shake the foundations of the Judeo-Christian world. It all starts with the murder of a United States Senator in a confessional, and the discovery of a strange religious document among his possessions. At the urging of his FBI friend, Branson joins the investigation. His effort to uncover the truth behind the murder draws him into the search for an eight-hundred-year-old treasure and into a web of ecclesiastical and political intrigue. Accompanied by a beautiful, sharp-tongued research librarian, Jessica Jones, Branson follows a trail of clues, from the peaks of the awe inspiring French Pyrenees to the caves of war-torn Afghanistan. Along the way, shadowy powerful forces trail the pair, determined to keep safe a secret buried for centuries.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interview with the author:
1. How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing fiction for the past decade. However, it is only in the past few years that I’ve been able to write full-time. Prior to writing fiction I wrote academic papers for college and graduate school, where I studied Political Science. But fiction is vastly different. It has taken me a while to get the academic writing out of my system. Sometimes I feel it hasn’t been entirely eradicated, but I think I’ve made progress.
2. How long have you been a published author?
I’ve been a published author since the summer of last year.
3. What titles do you have available?
CONVERSATIONS AMONG RUINS, a work of literary fiction that has also been described as a psychological thriller, was published by All Things That Matter Press in August of 2014. THE BROTHERS’ KEEPERS, a religious thriller, was published by MuseItUp Publishing in October of the same year.
4. What made you choose the subject of this book?
I chose the subject of THE BROTHERS’ KEEPERS for a couple of reasons. First, it allowed me to capitalize on my love of history, politics, and research. Second, it gave me a chance to examine some of the issues I struggle with on a daily basis: faith, the role of religion in politics, and the role of truth in society.
I’ve always felt that the best novels are those with immediate relevancy. THE BROTHERS’ KEEPERS is my contribution to the debates that rage in society concerning politics and religion—the two topics people say to avoid in polite company. Being a bit of a rebel, it was natural for me to write about such issues. However, I try to do so in a very respectful manner. As one reviewer wrote, “The author isn’t shy about raising controversial subjects but he does so in a respectful way.”
CONVERSATIONS AMONG RUINS is about a dual diagnosed* professor who falls in love with an enigmatic young woman he meets in detox. It is his struggle to achieve salvation against enormous odds. I chose the subject of that book because I am dual diagnosed, with Major Depressive Disorder and alcoholism. Part of my work is to raise awareness of the issue.
*The term dual diagnosed generally describes a person who has a mood disorder (e.g., depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder), and some form of chemical dependency (e.g., alcoholism, and/or addiction to cocaine, heroin or prescription medication).
5. Do you have any new titles coming soon?
My upcoming title will be the next installment in the Nicholas Branson series. It picks up where THE BROTHERS’ KEEPERS leaves off, but is meant to stand alone as well.
6. What is your favourite genre and why?
My favorite genre to write is the thriller/suspense genre. I particularly like those books that involve some element of historical mystery, because they require a vast amount of research. That having been said, I also love reading and writing literary fiction. I am drawn to lyrical prose for inspiration. Many of my favorite books (CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, DEMIAN, THE STRANGER, and NATIVE SON) are among the literary classics.
7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process?
To me the most exciting part of the writing process is the research behind the construction of the story. Having the story gel and take shape is a close second.
8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why?
Well, if it could be anyone, I’d say Fyodor Dostoevsky. His psychological and philosophical insights were unparalleled.
9. Where can readers find you on the web?
Readers can find me on my website, which has all my contact and book information, at: www.matthewpetersbooks.com.
Excerpt:
Father Rawlings drained his cup and set it on the table. “What I’m about to tell you may sound ridiculous and melodramatic. At best it will seem the stuff of conspiracy theories and spy novels. However, I assure you it is not.” He fixed Branson with a steely gaze. “As God’s soldiers, we are engaged in a battle, Nicholas. As real as any battle ever waged. The war we fight has raged for centuries, but the battle we fight now could well be the last. And we, you and I, the Roman Catholic Church as a whole, must emerge victorious. Nothing less than the foundations, the stability of the Christian world is at stake.” He smiled again, this time with bitterness.
BookCover_TheBrothersKeepers
“Of course it sounds unbelievable, even paranoid, but believe me, it is neither. I choose my words carefully. I don’t make bold assertions I cannot support. I assure you I am telling you exactly how things stand, exactly what is at stake. Before I go on, however, I must demand a pledge from you, your promise to help the Church in the epic struggle in which we currently find ourselves. We require your guarantee, your warrant if you will, that you will use all your energies, resources, and powers to secure the interests of the Church, and that you will let nothing deter you from the task at hand. With this binding agreement comes an inexhaustible supply of resources: anything and everything you deem necessary to accomplish your mission. But I must have your pledge before we proceed.” Rawlings rose from his seat, motioning for Branson to stand as well. “Before you give me your answer, listen again to Jesus’ words: ‘He who is not with me is against me.’ Nicholas Branson, tell me now: Are you with our Lord, or against Him?”
An excerpt from Pale With Color
Pale With Color Cheyenne Clark snatched her electric-blue apron from the hook and ambled out of the bathroom. Whoever the Mystery Man was, she liked hearing him order Chai tea. His voice sounded like Joseph’s, even his eyes were the same color. She slipped the smock over her head and wrapped the strings around her waist—twice—then knotted them. Her appetite had been non-existent, and she lost a considerable amount of weight. Someday she was going to cut the blasted long ties, but it wouldn’t be today. She strode to the front and peered into the barista’s mirror that covered the length of the back wall, hoping to see his emerald-green eyes, and his beard, a chestnut shadow, covering his square jaw. Within the reflection, an open field materialized. She walked hand in hand with Joseph. He lifted their palms, and he kissed each her fingertip. The oak tree stood several feet from them, and mounds of overturned dirt marked the countryside. She understood what was under them and shuddered. Pop. The sound reverberated in her ears. She closed her eyes. Scared of what she’d see next, and at the same time rivaling her fear, the phenomenon captured her curiosity, Cheyenne peeked again, and the next image revealed Joseph dead, laying on the grass. She blinked several times, staring into the glass, and the scene vanished. She lowered her hands, and scraped her sweaty palms against her thighs. How many times would she relive Joseph’s death? After a year, she expected to be over his passing. Had anyone noticed she was hallucinating? How long had she stood fixated? Glancing to her left and right, her employees were working on the same orders before the episode began. She scanned the mirror one more time and there he was, the Mystery Man stood second in line. She pivoted and tripped over the mat. Her hands stretched to catch one of the refrigerator handles, time turned into infinity. She missed and fell to the floor. Really? She lifted her chin, squinting through her hair, which covered her face in time to see Mystery Man leaning over the counter and studying her. Crap. “Are you okay?” His brows furrowed. “Disappearing would be good right about now.” “Don’t move.” In one effortless jump, he hefted over the work surface and landed on his feet. “Let me check you out.” She gasped. “Relax. I’m a doctor.” His fingers wisped her long tresses to the side with the softest touch of any man save one, Joseph.
