Trust in the Unseen
by Seth Mullins
Following the rigors of their self-made tour of the West, the members of the groundbreaking and volatile band Edge of the Known – “hands down, craziest band on Earth” – have an unprecedented chance to finally expose their music to the world. Unfortunately, singer/guitarist Brandon Chane, founder member and erratic genius of the group, is weathering a spiraling trip through an abyss of heartbreak and despair.
His personal pain threatens to derail his band’s progress even as it fuels some of its most incendiary songs. To further complicate matters, his mentor, Saul Mason, is weathering his personal crisis and no longer seems to be the all-knowing spiritual savant that Brandon first perceived him to be.
The road ahead looks bleak; and once more, he turns to the one thing that has sustained him throughout the course of his wounded, conflicted and inspired life: His Muse.
“We’d all thrown our fates to the wind, trusting in the unknown – in the Unseen, as our EP so proudly proclaimed – and that leap had thus far landed us in a place where we couldn’t even grope our way forward in the dark anymore.”
Discovering his voice was only the first step of the journey. Now he must somehow learn to trust the depths from which it comes, and the unknown horizons that it may sweep him away to, even as every part of his personal world seems to be falling apart.
Those of you who’ve experienced it won’t need me to describe the keen joys of makeup sex. When heart and desire get chugging at full throttle together, all while you’re moving in harmony with one another, it’s a sensation that can whisk you clear off the face of whatever world you’d previously been rooted to.
Janie wasted no time at all. Her mouth found mine before I’d even made it through the doorway. I guess we both figured there’d be time enough to talk and play catchup later. Her eyes were full of promises and apologies. I imagine mine were too. But we both knew that we were forgiven anyway, come what may.
Love scares us all because of its ferocious power. Maybe Janie had run in response to both of our fears, me just being silently complicit and therefore appearing like the victim of the whole thing. Saul always insisted that it takes two. If there are no accidents then this means that, in the wider scheme of things, there really are no victims.
“Does it just feel like we travel someplace else when we’re together like this,” she whispered, into the pristine silence of pre-dawn, “or do we really go?”
I smiled. It was a pure lover’s moment, you know? Only she would ever have asked me a question like that, and only I could have ever known what she meant.

On a bright July morning in 1948, a B-29 Superfortress flying a top-secret research mission over Nevada crashes into the calm waters of Lake Mead and sinks, remaining lost for half a century.
It has been nearly a year since five friends – Jag, Kody, Mariah, Tegan and Aari – mysteriously reappeared in a small town in Yukon several weeks after their small plane went down in Northern Canada. All were found in good health but with no recollection of what happened to them after the crash.
A baffling contagion is spreading across the bread-basket of North America destroying vital crops. As this dark shadow marches across the globe, widespread famine and riots bring desperate nations to the brink of war.
These seemingly unrelated events set the stage for a battle between the forces of darkness and those destined to become the ‘bearers of light’. From ravaged fields in the Great Plains to clandestine installations around the world, the Aegis League must race against time to save humanity.
“Unique and compelling! With non-stop action, adventure and intrigue, Aegis Incursion will appeal to fans of Maze Runner, Percy Jackson and Hunger Games.” ~Michael Beas – Bestselling Author of ‘Strump: A World of Shadows’ ~

…. He picked up the remote and switched the channel to a national news station. When he saw the headline on the screen, he frowned and turned up the volume.
“ . . . Additional reports are coming in of more crop failures in parts of North Dakota, Kansas and Montana,” the news anchor was saying. “For further details, we now turn to our correspondent in Baldwin City, Kansas.”
As the camera cut away to show a man with a microphone standing among burnt crops in a farmer’s field, Jag turned to the others, looking puzzled. “More crop failures? What’s going on?”

Lance Forrester is a dreamer. After a celebrated career as an astronaut and engineer, he and a friend build a secret spacecraft to seek their destinies in the stars. But his friend dies and Lance is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Desperate not to succumb to his fate, he convinces an acquaintance, ailing actress Sage Saint Claire, whom he hasn’t seen since high school, to join him on his quest to reach an advanced alien civilization which can heal them both. Unfortunately, true life is not a Hollywood movie, as much as Sage might want it to be, and problems abound. Mistakes in the past have turned Sage into a bitter old woman, and she turns out to be a less-than-perfect traveling companion which no amount of optimism, youth, or good health can cure. Can these two intrepid octogenarians-turned-immortals overcome the emotional scars of their pasts and achieve true happiness, or are they doomed to suffer for their mistakes, no matter how far from Earth they go?
I knew that the truth in my heart reflected in my old, weary eyes. “Yes, I do. Look, I’m no slick-talking salesman, as you can see. I’m just a scientist and engineer, but I truly believe there is a statistical probability of success. But even if I’m wrong, and our voyage ends up to be pointless, so what? Think of the fun you’ll have. Imagine the excitement and wonders of space travel that come before our long sleep.” I paused to dramatize my resolve and let a burst of quixotic energy erupt from me. “Cherish the adventure!”
It wasn’t her fears that I was battling against, but a lifetime of distrust. My confidence in a successful mission collapsed. “Of course, you have no reason to believe a word of what I’ve told you. You don’t really know me, except through my noted accomplishments. But I can’t disappoint you because I’m only offering friendship and hope.” I pushed my point harder. “Sure, we can die here on Earth. We can die in space. Or we can awaken on a remote and caring world that saves us! We are the captains of our fate, not the Grim Reaper—yet!”

Bad luck and worse choices—that’s Irene. She’s been a widow half her life and now splits her time between waitressing at the Rise and Shine café and singing in an oldies cover band. And she’s having an affair with a married man—something that even her eclectic, super liberal family can’t condone.
She’d be the first one to admit she has faults, but she’s not a bigot. The genetic pool in her nuclear family spans the globe. And it’s not that she’s prejudiced against people with disabilities but that doctors and wheelchairs give her the heebie-jeebies. So when a cute guy in a chair keeps showing up in the restaurant, she’s clumsy, awkward and strangely drawn. Can Irene let go of the past or is she too emotionally broken to find a future worth the risk?
The counter guy took a sip of his coffee. He turned to Mama. “It’s like the goddamned UN in here, a chink fag waiter and some spic in the kitchen.” He gave a wheezing laugh.
My stomach dropped. Mama gave me a look. Then she focused on him and exaggerated her Castilian accent. “What are you saying about my family?”
“Lighten up. I was making a joke.” From twenty feet away I could see the flare in his nostrils. “How was I to know you’d take it bad? You look white.” He backed away, fumbling in his back pocket for his wallet. Throwing a couple of bills on the counter, he bolted.
I picked up the money and smoothed it out. “On top of that, he shorted us a quarter.”
Mama reached over and plucked his jacket from the back of the stool. She held it so I could see the confederate flag stitched on the back. “And he left his trash.”
There was a squeak of wheels, and Mark rolled up, his dog beside him. He was smiling. “We’ll take it to him. You’re not the first person to get scared by Tuk.”
Jesus, he had nice eyes.

Harold Donaldson unwillingly becomes the custodian of a beautiful, handcrafted kaleidoscope that changes the viewer’s future and becomes the focus of evil operatives intent on capturing the kaleidoscope for nefarious purposes. Brilliant but socially inept, Harold has distanced himself from any connection to his dysfunctional childhood. Abandoned by a father accused of his mother’s death, Harold trusts no one until the ’scope forces him to accept a circle of friends he must rely on. To protect all their lives from imminent danger, Harold must discover the source of the ’scope’s mysterious powers. Just as he is on the verge of learning how it works and why his past connects to his future, he must face disturbing truths he’s run from all his life.
She yanked off the scarf and dropped it into his lap, climbed up on the bench and began leaping from one bench to the next, her sandals slapping the concrete.
Harold was afraid she would slip and fall, and wondered whether he should first call someone, or check her for ABC’s if she did. But she jumped lightly, a sprite among the forest of potted birds of paradise. Airway, breathing, c…what was the C for?
“I’ve always wanted to do this! Haven’t you?” Where the benches were too far apart, Pepper scissor- kicked to the ground and danced. Harold could breathe as long as she was safely on the ground, her arms aloft, her body swaying. Then she would leap up again, the sun reflecting off bald spots between shags of spirally hair. And she laughed. Not a scary, maniacal sound, but a child-like whiffle that whisked Harold back to the elementary school when Edna Velasquez had tried to jump around the lunchroom but fell and broke her arm when she slipped in pudding. Harold was the only one Edna didn’t pester to sign her cast. Circulation. That was what C stood for.
Pepper collapsed next to him, panting, her caramel skin aglow. She was a china doll with kewpie lips and taffy-pulled earlobes. “That felt good, Harry.” She dabbed at her upper lip with the scarf, a tiny rattle in her breath. “You should dance more. We should all dance more.”
The warmth from her body awoke something in him that had long been dormant. Confused emotions tangled somewhere in his soul, and he met her gaze.
“What makes you dance, Harry? What stirs your soul?”
She’d dared to pull at the thread he’d buried underneath years of proving himself worthy, smart. Sane. “I find satisfaction in my work.”
“And what is that? No, wait. Let me guess. You’re a Pez-head designer. No, a sign spinner for discount plastic surgeons. I could use one of those by the way.”
He knew better than to acknowledge her cosmetic surgery remark. Honest answers to conversations beginning with “Am I pretty enough?” and “I’m thinking of getting work done” had never gone well with Georgia. “I’m a fraud investigator.”

When longtime courtroom rivals Rachel Richards and Brady Craft get appointed to the bench in Bourbon Springs, Kentucky, tempers flare as they are forced to share chambers.
Working closely with the obstinate-yet-sexy Brady is not an attractive idea to Rachel—although she has to admit that Brady himself is pretty damned attractive.
Rachel doesn’t have to run for office to keep her judgeship, but Brady does. He draws a formidable opponent, Hannah Davenport, a wealthy co-owner of Old Garnet Distillery, where some of the finest Kentucky bourbon is crafted north of town along Old Crow Creek and near the historic springs which gave the town its unique name.
And Hannah just happens to be Rachel’s best friend.
As the judicial race heats up, so does the relationship between the judges—so they decide to keep it a secret.
But can any secret be kept in little Bourbon Springs, Kentucky?
SECRET BLEND is the first book in the Bourbon Springs Series, an upcoming nine-book series of smooth, sensual, sexy, slow-burn contemporary romances set amidst the lush and rolling Land of Bourbon and Bluegrass of central Kentucky.
Excerpt Upon a glimpse of his shorts, she saw the reason for Brady’s sudden affinity for standing in a freezer and pressed her lips together, trying not to laugh.
“Maybe you should go in the back of the store,” she suggested. “I think they have the big freezers back there.”
“I’d rather stay here,” he said in a low voice. “The view’s better.” Brady’s eyes raked over Rachel’s body.
“I’m pretty sure you’ve seen an even better one.”
“Indeed I have,” he said. “And recently. Very recently.”
“And would you like to see that view again?” she asked. She saw him swallow and knew she’d gotten the better of him.
He leaned forward and whispered. “I happen to know that if we weren’t in the middle of the grocery store, Judge Richards, I’d be looking at that view right this very minute.”
She sucked in a breath but soon recovered. “I would think,” she said, “that you’d be doing more than simply looking, Judge Craft.” She put a finger to her chin and looked up. “How do I put this? I think you’d be enjoying. But I’m not talking about merely the view.”
He moved closer to her.
“If I had you back where we were—” he looked at his watch “—eight hours ago, Judge Richards, we’d both be enjoying ourselves. I’d certainly enjoy the view of you writhing under me again as I—”
“Judge Richards, Judge Craft,” said a voice from nearby.
Brady and Rachel fell away from each other and looked to see the Commonwealth Attorney, Eleanor Giles, standing and staring at them.

Memories of a Ghost
Claire Summers awoke in a doctor’s office, heart pounding in her chest, blouse hiked up around her belly. She watched in confusion as a dark-haired woman moved an ultrasound paddle over her exposed stomach. “Claire,” said the woman, her badge identifying her as Dr. Greenwald, “your baby’s going to be okay.” She turned her head, scanning the room. They were alone. “I found the heartbeat,” the woman continued. “You were lucky this time. Your baby’s fine.” Claire? Is that her name? She doesn’t remember coming to see Dr. Greenwald, or even being pregnant. She doesn’t remember anything before waking up in the examination room, her life a complete blank. The only thing she really knows is that someone, somewhere is trying to kill her.
Memories of a Ghost tells the story of a young woman’s quest to remember her life. And just when she thinks she’s put all the pieces together, along comes an entirely different puzzle that will make her doubt herself and her sanity. Is she really Claire Summers?

THE ARGENT STAR
by Emerson Fray
What happens when your decisions affect an entire universe?
Ren Argent wanted to be an archeologist and spend her life exploring the lost cities of Earth. But when a new planet is discovered and her father is appointed King, she has to leave behind everything she knows to rule over a place she’s only heard of in legends.
Not long after her arrival she discovers there are insurgents hiding in the darkened forests and the planet is on the brink of civil war. It won’t be long until the Monarchy steps in to “neutralize” the threat.
Will she be able to stop the hostile takeover? Or will her actions ignite a rebellion across the universe?
“Why did you bring me here?” she asked. It was against Maks’s rules, and though Ren had only known her a short time, Ren hadn’t thought Sheridan would break the rules so easily. Yet she still brought Ren to one of the places Maks had forbidden, and didn’t even know about.
“When one is battling a river it is best to travel with the current,” Sheridan replied, a small smirk appearing. She knelt beside Ren and dipped her fingers into the water, swirling them around to create a line of green light. “This place is magic; I thought you could use some magic.”
“Magic isn’t real,” Ren said, although she enjoyed the idea of it. She wasn’t one to shy away from the entertaining tricks, from smoke and mirrors, but she knew it was just that. Tricks. “There’s probably some kind of algae here to create the glow, and maybe some kind of advan—”
“Not everything needs to be explained,” Sheridan said. “Sometimes it just is.”
That made Ren quiet and she kept her opinion to herself. If the people of Novae believed in certain magics then that was fine. She didn’t want them to force their beliefs on her, so why should she force hers on them?
“Thanks,” she mumbled, “for bringing me here. You know, you’re actually really sweet.”
Sheridan blanched, her hand stopping all motion and remaining in the water. “What?”
“You try to hide it,” Ren said, her lips turning upwards, “and you always have those things on your back.”
Sheridan tilted her head to glance at the weapons she was never without. “They’re kamas,” she said before looking back at Ren.
“But I can see it. You act like you couldn’t care less about the world and what people think but you like Novae.” Ren was careful with her words. “You don’t like the Monarchy.”
Sheridan took a deep breath. “I don’t. And neither do you.”
