Shadows by Stella Barcelona

by Stella Barcelona

Cataclysm. Now. Run.

A cryptic, urgent text message turns the peaceful life Skye Barrows has created for herself and her sister into chaos. She must follow her father’s instructions to the letter, but Sebastian Connelly is blocking her way. Telling Sebastian what she must do is not an option.

What He Doesn’t Know Will Get Them All Killed

When a prison break in the midst of a security system upgrade threatens to destroy the reputation of Sebastian’s company, Black Raven Private Security Contractors, he goes on the hunt for escaped prisoner Richard Barrows – a delusional and paranoid computer software genius.

Sebastian’s mission: find Richard Barrows and return him to prison, but stonewalled by Skye, who refuses to give him answers, and with the added complication of her special needs sister, Sebastian finds himself always a step or two behind vicious killers.

Nothing About This Case is Normal

For Sebastian, it should be simple, but this case will test him in ways he never imagined. As probing interrogation becomes urgent protection, the search for Barrows forces Sebastian and Skye into a murky world of shadows and illusions.

As the wheels touched the runway, Sebastian, alone in the passenger cabin, inserted a tiny audio transmitter and receiver into his ear, pressed a few buttons on his watchband that turned the earpiece into a phone and auto-dialed Ragno, Black Raven’s senior data analyst. Unless Ragno’s work was focused on a particular operation, she or someone on her team provided a steady stream of updates to Black Raven partners on sensitive operations. Phrases like client safely delivered in Karachi or deposit made in Istanbul were not uncommon to hear from Ragno or her team throughout a normal day. Today wasn’t normal, though, and one hundred percent of Ragno’s focus was on the prison break.

“Talk to me.”

“Good morning,” Ragno’s tone was, as usual, clear, crisp, and calm. The woman was unflappable, non-alarmist, and always cool under pressure. She was Sebastian’s conduit to the numerous agents who were working the prison break, his link to the rest of the world, and the point person for assimilating the massive amounts of information Black Raven’s data analysts were gathering.

“Holt was just apprehended in Georgia, and we’re getting more leads on Biondo,” she said. Relief fluttered in Sebastian’s belly. Holt, and one of the escapees who had already been apprehended, had been in the prison library with Barrows and Biondo when the blackout occurred. The other three prisoners had escaped from the prison laundry facility. “Holt is en route to the nearest federal prison for debriefing.”

Five escapees down. Two to go. He might be able to save this clusterfuck after all. “Is Holt saying anything about Barrows or Biondo?”

“No. So far he’s saying he left with the others, before Barrows. He didn’t think Barrows was going to leave. Didn’t see Barrows or any of the others once he was outside the gate. Interrogation is continuing as we speak.” She paused. “Did you manage to sleep while in flight?”

“No,” he shut his iPad, slipped it into his backpack, and stood as the plane halted. “I’ve read through some of Barrows’ interviews.”

“Fascinating, right?”

“Yes,” he said, slipping on his jacket. “Imagine if all of that brilliance could have been harnessed.”

“Oh,” she said, “I’ve been imagining.”

A struggling veteran reads about the mysterious death of a local athlete and wants to learn more. He meets the owner of the business linked to the crime and discovers others have “disappeared”.

All stories include a man with dark hair, blue eyes, and a strong jaw.

Then, it’s his turn.

The mysterious forces at Bliss change everything. What brought them all to Bliss is not as it appears and their lives are powerfully interconnected across space and time.

Greg opened the backdoor to Bliss. He forced himself to stop thinking about how the name of the place made him think of a day spa rather than a barbeque joint. The tell-tale wood smoke greeted him, causing his stomach to growl and suspending his thoughts about the name of the place. Musical chimes sounded above the door as Greg’s eyes adjusted from the glare of the fall sun to the darkened interior.

Figures, he thought. Why wouldn’t there be chimes at a place called Bliss?

Once his eyes adjusted, the bar area didn’t seem to be out of the ordinary. Greg stopped at the partition just inside the door. It was covered with a list of sayings:

Follow Your Bliss
Happiness Is an Inside Job

Be Careful What You Wish For
There’s No Better Time to Claim the Future You Want Than Now

A half-laugh escaped him. He thought it was a menu board at first and the philosophizing caught him off guard. Still, the final statement hit close to home, and he took a deep breath.

Greg headed to the long black bar. A smaller party room was to the right with about a dozen tables to the left. It had the feel of a contemporary jazz club or maybe a speakeasy. Beyond the tables, bright daylight streamed into the lounge from a passage between the front diner area and the bar. No creepy Twilight Zone feeling here, he thought.

Two muted, flat screen TVs hung on either side of the wood shelves stocked with bottles of all sizes. He eyed the taps and sports coverage while surveying the place. Though there were no windows in the back area, yet it didn’t feel claustrophobic. Between the lighting, mirrors and glass, there was elegance to the place that radiated a different type of light. Poster-sized black and white pictures hung on the walls, showing the history of the place. Greg guessed they were from the 1940’s. Smaller pictures of patrons and notable artifacts related to “Our Place” dotted the walls. Greg knew from his early research that Our Place was the name of the restaurant until a few years earlier.

Greg settled in, still getting a sense of the place, when a woman with graying dark hair approached him. Though he talked with Lois on the phone, this was the first time he saw her. She was not remarkably tall, but definitely commanded the bar and carried herself in a way that betrayed her real age. She had a look of knowing, or maybe it was just cheer that she had a customer on a dead afternoon.

The Alastair Stone Chronicles Series by R.L. King

The Alastair Stone Chronicles series
by R. L. King

DBookCover_Bk1_AlastairStoneChroniclesr. Alastair Stone, Occult Studies professor, powerful mage, and snarky British expat now based in Palo Alto, California, does his best to keep his academic and social lives separate from his increasingly frequent brushes with various malevolent forces from the supernatural side of the street. A little horror, a little humor, but mostly straight-up urban fantasy.
Stone and a Hard Place
Dr. Alastair Stone, Occult Studies professor and powerful mage, has his hands full trying to keep the two sides of his life separate as he trains a new apprentice, deals with a malevolent entity trapped in the basement of a wealthy old woman’s massive home, and battles dark mages intent on enslaving it for their own ends.

Debut novel of the Alastair Stone Chronicles.

The Forgotten
Dr. Alastair Stone is back, this time teaming up with Jason Thayer, a young man hunting for his missing sister. Embroiled in a web of odd homeless people, a growing conspiracy, and deadly danger, they soon realize that even if they find Jason’s sister, they might not be able to help her.

What do you do when you discover an extradimensional plot that threatens the safety of the entire world, but you can’t tell anyone about it because literally anyone on Earth could be part of it?

Book Two of the Alastair Stone Chronicles.

                                                             THE FORGOTTEN
BookCover_Bk2_AlastairStoneChroniclesJason let out a loud sigh, his natural tendency to want to move nearly overwhelming now. “How do we know if it doesn’t work? Do we have to stand in here forever?”

Stone was about to answer when he stiffened, startled. “It’s back,” he said, pointing at the mirror.

Jason spun around. Sure enough, the reddish figure had reappeared behind them in the mirror, looking as angry as ever. It said something to Stone in its bones-and-parchment voice, punctuated by many growls and other sounds of displeasure. The mage nodded. “She’s there now, then?” he asked.

The figure snarled and glared at Stone. It appeared to be contemplating another lunge out into the real world, but eyed the mage warily and decided against it. Instead, it spat at him. The spittle flew out, contacted its own side of the mirror, and ran down toward the table with a sizzle. Then it reached out with a ropy, muscular arm and attempted to sweep all the objects off the table on its side of the mirror. The candles, knife, and chalice went, careening silently over the edge and out of sight. The book remained, and the creature screamed in agony as its arm contacted it.

“It’s fighting me—” Stone said under his breath. “I’m going to release it now.” He reached up with both hands and put them on the mirror again. Loudly and clearly, he uttered a long sentence in the strange Latin-like language, then pulled his hands back abruptly and clapped them together in a sudden, sharp sound that made Jason jump. He stumbled, reeling back, realizing with horror even as he did so that he had no way of stopping himself. He was going to fall over backwards, taking out a good chunk of the circle when he landed.

As he went over, he got a last look at the creature’s face. Instead of looking angry, it looked suddenly surprised and triumphant. That lasted about two seconds. It flung itself forward again, clawed hands eagerly reaching in front of it, reaching for Stone, for Jason—

Interview with the Author:

1. How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I used to write stories as a young kid, including several Star Trek fan fiction stories as a teenager about which the less said, the better.  I finished my first full-length novel (which will never see the light of day) in my early twenties, and then wrote five fan fiction novels in the universe of the roleplaying game Shadowrun, which I posted online. People liked them, and those were what began to give me the idea that maybe I was decent enough at this writing thing that people would want to read my stuff.

2. How long have you been a published author?
My first professionally published work was some game-related fiction for the RPG Shadowrun (the same one I wrote the fan stories for—those were instrumental in getting me the freelance work) in 2001. Since then, I’ve written numerous bits of fiction and game material, including a full-length adventure, for the game, and they published my first game-universe novel in April of this year. I published my first indie books in 2011 and 2012, then took them down and reworked them as part of my Stone Chronicles series.

3. What titles do you have available?
Currently, the first two books in my Stone Chronicles series, Stone and a Hard Place and The Forgotten, are available. My Shadowrun novel, Borrowed Time, is published by Catalyst Game Labs and also available through all the regular channels.

4. What made you choose the subject of this book?
I’ve loved dark fantasy and horror since I was a kid, and urban fantasy since I discovered Shadowrun back in the Eighties, so it was natural when it came time for me to write something original, it would straddle those genres. My main character, Dr. Alastair Stone, has been knocking around my head in various forms for many years, and I’m happy that he’s finally found a home in the series.

5. Do you have any new titles coming soon?
The third book in the Stone Chronicles series, The Threshold, will be out in the September-October timeframe. I have two more finished and in the pipeline after that, and several more are in various stages of production (from ideas to notes to one that’s nearly finished in first draft). I expect that if things go according to plan, there will be quite a number of new books in the series coming.

6. What is your favourite genre and why?
My favorite genre is urban fantasy—specifically the end of it that is more thriller- and horror-based than romance-based. I like it because I love magic but I’m not a big fan of traditional medieval fantasy, so being able to read and write about modern-day people and situations with magic involved is the best for me. I love the Dresden Files series (which I had not read when I started my series—friends insisted that I do so, and I’m glad they did!) and I’ve got a few more writers on my list to read when I get time. I’m also a big fan of the Harry Potter series.

7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process?
What I call “epiphanies”—when I’m stuck on a particular part of a book, it’s just not working and I can’t figure out why…and suddenly, out of the blue, the solution will hit me. Maybe I need to add in a new plot point, change a scene, tweak the characters in a section, but whatever it is, I instantly know it’s going to fix the problem and make the book work. Those are wonderful, and I just have to trust myself that they’ll happen if I don’t try to force them. Also, I love it when fans connect with me and tell me they enjoyed my books and my characters.

8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why?
I think I’d choose Jim Butcher. I’ve met him a couple of times, briefly, and he seems like a smart, easygoing, and very nice guy. He’s also a gamer and he has tons of incredible ideas. I would love to see what happened if Alastair Stone met Harry Dresden.

“Books carried me through my childhood. They carried me through cold nights and hot days, through hunger and fear. I grew up under the poverty level, and my family spent a lot of time telling each other stories to pass the time. I was awkward, clumsy, and different. I was quiet and bookish. I had the same problems as all teenagers. I often felt inadequate and insecure. I was bullied quite frequently. Words carried me. They gave me wings and helped me fly. They brought me through grief and despair, through the death of both of my parents and through the journey that came afterward. With time came knowledge and acceptance, and my love for words grew. Stories mean different things to different people. I tell stories because, through them, I grow as a person and as a writer. Remember, life isn’t always easy. There are never guarantees, and we are all different for a reason. Embrace your awkward. Be unique. Change your fairytale. Because what makes you different makes you beautiful.”

Rough-around-the-edges Cyrus Ryland rose from humble origins to become England’s wealthiest citizen and most eligible bachelor. Called the King of Commerce, he thinks nothing of marriage until he hosts a masked ball and discovers an alluring woman hiding in his study. After one dance the lady vanishes, leaving behind a single shoe. The hunt is on, but finding her is only half the battle.

Claire Mayhew wants her hard won independence…a mid-town shop of her own. She resists the scorching attraction with Mr. Ryland — her new landlord, but Cyrus isn’t a man who gives up easily.

“Mr. Ryland, on your first visit to my shop, you questioned my accounts. Now do you plan to inspect how I manage the messengers?” She was being a little tetchy, but that assessment of his touched a sore spot. “As long as I pay my rent come Friday, whatever else happens is no concern of yours.”

He cracked a smile. “Not afraid to put me in my place, are you?”

“As in reminding you that you’re my landlord and you’ve no business giving me such commentary? I’m happy to. I doubt you share your opinions with the male proprietors who rent from you.”

Frayed nerves and a morning fraught with mishaps put her on edge. To admit this to him would be akin to acknowledging a chink in her shopkeeper’s armor. She wasn’t choosing her words with care but let them flow nonetheless.

“Duly noted, Miss Mayhew. I admit I haven’t changed my mind on this venture of yours,” he asserted.

“At the table, even you acknowledged the dangers preying on women in London. At least my sister’s business proposition must prove some goodwill during this trial period.”

She heard him, but her vision caught on the curious red ribbon. Ryland glanced at the box under his arm, his stance relaxing.

“This is the other reason for my visit today,” he said quietly, holding out the wooden box. “It’s for you.”

Her gaze snapped up to his. “For me?”

Claire reached out, accepting the gift with cautious hands. She hefted the box gingerly up and down, checking the sides.

He chuckled. “I promise there’s no viper inside.”

“You bought me a ledger, didn’t you?” Her tone lacked all enthusiasm. A rectangular account book could fit inside the box. So would a shoe.

“If I did, you must agree a ledger would do you good.” His brows slammed together, a small vertical line forming above his nose. “But you won’t know until you open it.”

Cockpit by Kate Deveaux

by Kate Deveaux

High school sweethearts re unite forty years later at 37,000 feet.

Fifty eight year old commercial airline pilot, Bobbi Cooper, gets a blast from the past when her high school sweetheart, Mack McConnell, appears as one her first class passengers on her 747 transatlantic flight to London.

Used to being in control at all times, Bobbi is reeling from a crummy marriage and she must learn at Mack’s capable hands that losing control can be oh so sexy.

Mack McConnell. He looked as good as the last time she’d seen him, when they’d broken up just after high-school graduation. The day she’d left for the military academy. The day she’d left him, taking off the small diamond solitaire he’d given her and handing back to him. She’d made her choice then. Career first. It had broken her heart to call it off, and she knew she had shattered his. But she also knew she could never have asked him to wait for her to return to sleepy Summer Hill after military school and her subsequent enlistment in the Air Force.

Many sleepless nights later, she’d assuaged her guilt by hoping Mack had found someone to love him as he deserved. Bobbi wasn’t one to look back at the past. But now it was sitting in row 2A.

Seeing Mack sitting there, in her cabin, had sucked the wind out of her. He’d looked great. Older, yes. More like…mature. Yes, that was it. He’d matured. The salt-and- pepper of his wavy brown hair only made him more handsome, if that were possible. And the look in his eyes hadn’t changed. He made her feel as if he could see right into her. One glance from him and she’d damn well come unglued.

She peered at herself in the mirror under the harsh glare of the fluorescent lights. Shit. She looked old. Especially having spent two-thirds of her lifetime in the air. Being a pilot dried out her skin, and no amount of fancy miracle creams seemed to remedy that. And as for beauty sleep…she was doubly screwed. A career as a pilot had guaranteed that her sleep pattern was ruined for life, a side effect of the hectic pace of working her way up the male-dominated ladder to captain.

She scrunched her face and made a bunch of wrinkles. Crap. “Don’t do that!” she scolded, and unflexed her face, easing the wrinkles away. Better. She smiled softly at the mirror, studying her face for clues of just what Mack saw when he looked at her. Do I look fifty-seven…okay, fifty-seven and a half, to be precise?

The plane jostled again, a series of mild bumps interrupting her self-examination in the tiny lavatory. Immediately alert to warning signs of weather, waiting to see if Scott and Neville were doing as she’d told them, she paused to see if the captain’s call button would ding. Satisfied by a lack of communication from the cockpit and no more bumps or fasten seat belt signs warning of turbulence ahead, she quickly peed and freshened up. Double-checking her face, she smoothed her starched white shirt and navy trousers before heading back to the flight deck…and to possibly face Mack again.

Glancing back into the mirror one last time before she exited the tiny bathroom, she chided herself for caring what Mack McConnell thought of her after all these years. He probably had a wife and four kids and a dog and a cabin at the lake by now.

Scott’s are literal, and they have him convinced that he will never deserve the woman he loves.

*Stand-alone companion to the Cassie Scot series

Her head rested perfectly atop his shoulder. She wasn’t a short woman and he wasn’t a tall man. He only had three inches on her, but it put her at the perfect height for his embrace. She fit him. Her beautiful body, soft and full, fit him perfectly too. This wasn’t a woman who would break at his touch.

He wanted to kiss her. He wanted more than that, but just now he wanted to feel her lips against his. He had refrained the night before, glorying in her touch alone, forcing himself to let that be all he needed. But today he wasn’t sure it would be enough. Today he felt desperate and unsure.

He placed a finger under her chin and lifted it slightly. Her eyes met his in question, but he didn’t answer in words. He answered by settling his lips over hers in a soft, gentle brushing of skin against skin. Then he backed away slightly.

Her eyes were closed and her lips slightly parted. She looked a bit dazed and very unsure, but she wasn’t pushing him away. He could smell her growing interest and it made his heart swell with newfound hope and need.

He brushed his lips against hers again before deepening the caress. She returned the kiss, a little inexpertly but with all the passion he’d known she possessed. She opened her mouth to him.

Center of Gravity
by Laura McNeill

Her whole life, Ava Carson has been sure of one thing: she doesn’t measure up to her mother’s expectations. So when Mitchell Carson sweeps into her life with his adorable son, the ready-made family seems like a dream come true.

In the blink of an eye, she’s married, has a new baby, and life is grand.

Or is it?

When her picture-perfect marriage begins unraveling at the seams, Ava convinces herself she can fix it. It’s temporary. It’s the stress. It’s Mitchell’s tragic history of loss.

If only Ava could believe her own excuses.

Mitchell is no longer the charming, thoughtful man she married. He grows more controlling by the day, revealing a violent jealous streak. His behavior is recklessly erratic, and the unanswered questions about his past now hint at something far more sinister than Ava can stomach. Before she can fit the pieces together, Mitchell files for divorce and demands full custody of their boys.

Fueled by fierce love for her children and aided by Graham Thomas, a new attorney in town —Ava takes matters into her own hands, digging deep into the past. But will finding the truth be enough to beat Mitchell at his own game?

Center of Gravity weaves a chilling tale, revealing the unfailing and dangerous truth that things—and people—are not always what they seem.

The road rushes under the wheels. I rearrange snippets of the frantic conversation. Gash. Some blood. Breathing fine. Emergency room. A few more miles to the hospital.

I flash back to this morning. Packed sack lunch, flop of dark hair across his bare forehead, navy backpack slung over one shoulder. A surge of pure love courses through my heart. A stab of worry steals my breath. I force myself to focus.

The traffic light ahead flashes green to yellow. Intersection’s clear. I push the accelerator to the floor, glance in the rearview mirror. Air from the open window catches Sam’s wisps of hair. He smiles, showing off his first few baby teeth, and reaches a chubby hand at the rays of sunshine streaking by, trying to catch the light.

Thump. Thump. The Jeep jerks to the left. I guide the wheel, hold it steady, and take my foot off the gas. When I pull over and brake, the abrupt stop sends up a dust cloud.

“Uh-oh,” Sam says.

I unbuckle, jump out, and survey the damage. A glance at the tire confirms it. Flat. Dead.
Hands on my hips, I bite my lip.

Tentatively, I grab the jack from the back of the Jeep, the weight of it solid and heavy in my hands. I can fix this. After all, in my former life, as a school counselor at Mobile Prep, I was the problem-solver, crisis manager, and shoulder to cry on. I always handled situations. And I didn’t need help.

Then my eyes fall on Sam as he babbles and blows bubbles in the back seat. I hesitate, gripping the metal between my palms. As the sun beats down on us, heating my skin, my pulse begins to race. Maybe I was fearless because I didn’t know any better. I wasn’t a mom then. I didn’t have two children depending on me. Trusting me to do the right thing, be on time, and not screw up.

Soaked by A.J. Cosmo

by A. J. Cosmo

Don’t forget to enter the Rafflecopter at the end of this post.

What a way to start summer… I should have never stood up to that bully Jacob. It was just a water balloon thrown to save my friend’s behind during recess. Now we’re on a bus heading home and everyone gets the same text: “$500 gift card and full immunity to the kid that brings me Aiden- Jacob.” I’m Aiden by the way, and the entire fourth grade is staring at me. Hopefully, with my friend’s help, we can get off at the next stop, three miles from my house, and make it home before the entire neighborhood finds us.

Soaked is the first middle-grade novel by author/illustrator A.J. Cosmo. Filled with humor and suspense, this surprising page turner is a tale of friendship, courage, and standing up for what’s right. For 3rd-5th grade readers.

An Interview with the Author:

1. How long have you been writing?

Professionally, I have been writing full-time for four years. However, I have been writing one thing or another since the third grade.
2. How long have you been a published author?

I’m what I like to call “professionally published” in that I am a self-published author who takes as much care in all aspects of my craft as a traditionally published author would. The goal is to be indistinguishable from authors and books that have entire imprints behind them. I’ve been doing this for four years now and every day is a learning experience.
3. What titles do you have available?

I currently have thirty-nine titles written and illustrated by me on Amazon right now. Some titles are no longer available, so the actual count is closer to fifty.
4. What made you choose the subject of this book?

Soaked is about bullying, but more than that, it’s about doing the right thing when you really don’t want to do it. Righteousness is a jagged pill and following it leads to much discomfort. Like many people, I pretend not to be able to help, even when I know I can, simply to avoid any more discomfort in my life. The hero of Soaked is a boy whose “character flaw” is that he acts on his righteous impulses even though he really doesn’t want to.

5. Do you have any new titles coming soon?

We’re almost done with the Monsters A to Z series and should have the final book out by October. I’m also creating some interactive iOS books. My next middle grade novel like Soaked should be out for Christmas and is affectionately titled “Poop.”
6. What is your favourite genre and why?

Either science fiction or fantasy, but I think my real favorite genre is “magical realism” which is a blend of those two. Think A Wrinkle in Time or Jurassic Park; extraordinary things happen to everyday people and while you’re in the story you totally believe that these things are possible. We beat imagination out of children through curriculum and literature is one way to reclaim it as an adult.
7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process?

The “oooh, oooh!” moment when you realize a solution to a problem you have been having and then there’s the incredible “where did that come from?” moments where you are surprised by what you just created. Those moments are why writers often claim to not be the true authors of their work. It literally feels like something is speaking through you.

8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why?

Neil Gaiman, he’s a reasonable person and so gifted that he makes the process seem ordinary. Plus I’ve never been one to recoil at the macabre, so I couldn’t imagine turning down an idea.

We ran into the woods and weaved through the trees. Ben grabbed my hand and pulled me into one of the crusty drainpipes that marked where future homes would be put. We waited there for the patrol to run past.

“You left him,” Ben said.

“You left him? How about we left him?” I said.

“It was your idea to make a break for it. Your plan, you’re blame,” Ben growled.

We stopped, looked out of the pipe, and waited for the sound of the rallying kids to come near.

“I’m sorry,” I said as I looked down at the dirt.

Feet stomped by overhead and we dropped our voices.

Ben shook his head. “They’re not after me,” Ben whispered. “I could walk out right now and no one would care.”

“Don’t say that,” I said. I couldn’t help but feel a bit betrayed. “What makes you think they wouldn’t bother you?”

“I nearly got soaked back there.” He pulled out his cell phone. He looked at his phone as if it was the most precious thing in the world. And you know what? To him, it was. I knew that if something happened to it that it would take at least three grades before he would be able to get a new one.

“Is it okay?” I asked, not caring about the phone at all.

He tapped the phone. Then he shook it, pawed it, and pleaded with it.

It didn’t work.

Forbidden Things: Book One – Dissident by Nikki McCormack

Forbidden Things: Book One – Dissident
by Nikki McCormack

Ascard power can strengthen, heal and create. It also has great potential to destroy, enough to topple entire governments. Indigo’s country places strict limitations on the use of ascard so she must channel her talents into the healing arts or risk severe punishment. An orphan from a disgraced family, trapped by her father’s treason, Indigo struggles to reclaim her place in a society that has driven her into an abusive engagement.

Then a mysterious stranger from a neighboring country contacts her using ascard. He needs help escaping his prison so he can bring an end to his emperor’s oppressive rule or die trying. His unshakable devotion to his cause and the passion hidden behind his cool arrogance move her to help him at the risk of being branded a traitor herself.

When the politics of society bring them together a second time, Indigo decides to use her growing powers to help him fight his war. If only she dared fight for her own future with such passion. Perhaps she can find the courage to do so by helping the man she has fallen for win his revolution. She might have exactly the power he needs to succeed.

Indigo stared at the place Eldrian had been seconds ago. With him there, even the beasts couldn’t drive her away. With him gone, icy fingers of dread crept up her spine. She wanted to be anywhere else. In scant seconds, everything changed and all she had left of him were memories and a pair of boots.

Looking at the oversized boots, she grinned. Though she barely knew him, something about him fit her. His arms felt like home more than any place she had ever been. Jayce would be a poor substitute for this exotic man who made her feel so wanted and alive. Such was the price she would pay for her father’s treason.

She stepped closer to the pillars, pulse racing, but the shimmer was gone. He was gone and she couldn’t follow. In that instant, she would abandon everything to go after him. Placing a hand on either side of one pillar, she closed her eyes and pressed her forehead against rough gray stone. If only…

The sound of movement behind her shattered her musings like so much fragile glass. Her heart bounded into her throat. She spun. A hound ambled into the canyon. She looked into its sightless eyes and recognized death in them.
