by Tina De Salvo

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Once invited into New Orleans’ historic mansions to evaluate prized antiques, Dr. Jewell Duet held a coveted professorship at a top university. With her deep knowledge of Louisiana history and antiquities, she was the go-to person for anyone requiring professional appraisals. But, one hasty decision cost her both her reputation and possibly her freedom. Now, as she waits to discover if her future includes prison, Jewell knows that taking the job at Sugar Mill is necessary if she is to support her beloved grandmother who has advanced dementia.

Charming, sexy lawyer Beau Bienvenu’s attraction to the intriguing historian vies with his distrust of her motives. Beau has one simple goal when it comes to the family that rescued him and made him part of their clan…protect them at all costs. He doesn’t trust Jewell, nor her reason for taking the lowly job at Sugar Mill Plantation. What is she really up to? Is it possible Jewell and her quirky grandmother are there to try to profit from a Bienvenu family mystery? If so, both women are out of luck.

Jewell and Beau are at odds about almost everything. The only things they agree on are that family is everything…and that their mutual attraction is inconvenient.

EXCERPT:

Jewell hesitated pressing the doorbell. She was still studying the one-hundred-forty-five-year-old hand-forged nailheads in the doorframe. She thought of the slaves or free men of color who would have forged these nails right here on the plantation. They probably would’ve worked near the bayou, needing a water source.

Jewell squatted and pressed her hand to the gray wooden planks beneath her feet. It felt thick with years of paint buildup but she could tell by the length of the planks and the way they were laid that the wood was cypress. “Mimi, can you imagine how tall the cypress tree must’ve been that formed these boards? It must’ve been from one of the ancient cypresses that were as tall and wide as the sequoias in Yellowstone National Park.”

“Huh,” Mimi grunted as she expertly applied her lipstick. When she finished, she pressed the doorbell, which didn’t ding but sounded more like heavy wind chimes.

Jewell stood, touched her nervous stomach, then dropped her hands at her sides. “Remember, we don’t have the job, yet.”

“Then you better be on your best behavior and stop that excited breathing. You sound like you’re having sex with an athletic man.”

“Mimi!” Jewell felt her face blush. Her grand-mère had never spoken of sex with her until the dementia advanced.

“Oh, don’t be so virtuous.” The door opened, but Mimi continued. “Sex is good and fun. Don’t you know that? Haven’t you had it before?”

Jewell placed a finger to her own lips and made a shhh sound to her grand-mère. Mimi placed her index finger on her freshly painted red lips looking innocent and childlike. She wanted to hug her precious, precocious grand-mère, but turned toward the opened door instead.

“Shame. Now, everybody’s stopped talking just when the conversation was getting interesting,” the man who answered the door said. Jewell dropped her hands to her side, blushing again.

GENRE: Paranormal Romance

BLURB:

Trapped by a future she refuses to face…

Accused of cyber espionage by the United States government, ethical hacker Ivy Macpherson is now on the FBI’s most wanted list. Out of options, she runs, desperate for time to prove her innocence. Or risk capture by a covert agency well known for ruthlessness.

Condemned by a past he doesn’t want to remember…

Cursed with a terrible temper, Scottish dragon-warrior Tydrin struggles to atone for a mistake that took innocent lives. Unable to forgive himself, he returns to the scene of his crime in hopes of finding absolution, but discovers a woman in need of his help instead. Intervening in the nick of time, he whisks Ivy to safety, only to realize the daughter of the family he wronged is the one destined to steal his heart.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MediaKit_BookCover_FuryOfAHightlandDragon
Excerpt:
To kill or not to kill. That was the question.
Gaze locked on the FBI agent, Tydrin debated a moment. It wouldn’t take much. A flick of his fingers. A little swirl, a lot of arm action combined with a burst of magic and…poof gone. Fireball central and two dead agents, nothing but human ash spread over the cruel lines of a desolate cemetery. Kind of fitting, actually. Way too tempting, but well…shite. He couldn’t do it. Not with the lass in his arms and his dragon half in full protection mode.
Ivy needed help, not added trouble.
And a couple of dead agents? Tydrin pursed his lips. Aye. For sure. Not the best way to get on the lass’s good side.
Under his influence, soothed by his magic, he cradled her closer. She sighed and settled in, curling up like a well fed kitten in his arms. The underside of his chin brushed the top of her head. Her long damp hair clung to his skin, getting caught in old day stubble. He rubbed his mouth over the soft strands. A sense of peace invaded him body, mind and heart. His muscles loosened, releasing some of the tension. He exhaled in relief. Hmm, she was sweet. So alluring with her dark red hair and pale, freckled skin. Far too pretty to be a fugitive. Hunted. Trapped. Wanted by the FBI.
Way too vulnerable without him to protect her.
GENRE: Historical Fantasy Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The gauntlet is thrown. One must die. Refusal is not an option.

Arthur the High King of Breatein has fallen captive of a longtime enemy, the Saxon warrior-princess Camilla, who lusts to avenge the death of her betrothed at Gyan’s hands and will stop at nothing, even the black arts, to achieve her goal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

MediaKit_BookCover_TheChallenge

EXCERPT

With a shudder Gyan recalled the rumor that Camilla had enlisted demonic aid…

She banished those thoughts, and their attendant fears, by pondering the irony that Camilla had tried to strike at her through Arthur. It might have worked, once. The passion that had colored the early years of their marriage was still celebrated in song throughout Breatein and Caledon.

These days, she wasn’t singing.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Kim Headlee lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia with her family, cats, goats, Great Pyrenees goat guards, and assorted wildlife. People and creatures come and go, but the cave and the 250-year-old house ruins—the latter having been occupied as recently as the mid-twentieth century—seem to be sticking around for a while yet.

Kim is a Seattle native and a direct descendent of twentieth-century Russian nobility. Her grandmother was a childhood friend of the doomed Grand Duchess Anastasia, and the romantic yet tragic story of how Babushka escaped Communist Russia with the aid of her American husband will most certainly one day fuel one of Kim’s novels. Another novel in the queue will involve her husband’s ancestor, the seventh-century proto-Viking king of the Swedish colony in Russia.

For the time being, however, Kim has plenty of work to do in creating her projected 8-book Arthurian series, The Dragon’s Dove Chronicles, and other novels clamoring for attention. She has been a published novelist since 1999, beginning with the original editions of Dawnflight (Sonnet Books, Simon & Schuster) and Liberty (writing as Kimberly Iverson, HQN Books, Harlequin).

ELLI

by Tina DeSalvo

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Her life could have been over with her breast cancer diagnosis, but Elli had fought and won. Now she is ready to fight for other women facing the same nightmare, but to do so she is going to need money. And she is going to need it fast.

Fortunately, Elli finds herself with half ownership of a Louisiana plantation. A twisted inheritance has set her up with an interesting future. Unfortunately, Elli no longer believes in planning a future, she just wants to take the money and run.

Ben Bienvenu wants nothing to do with the woman from California who is certain to turn his world upside down. But the conditions of the will that left the property to both of them doesn’t give him much choice. Not if he wants to keep the property that’s been in his family for generations.

A snobby diva rental dog, an impossible will, a nosy Bienvenu family, a distracting Mardi Gras season and a man who thinks he is protecting his son by standing his ground against her… Elli knows that trying to find common ground with this man known as the Cajun Dog Whisperer is going to be an uphill battle.

Two broken people.

Both in need of a Second Chance….

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BookCover_Elli
Excerpt Three:
“Out!” Ben stormed into the guest room and closed Elli’s open suitcase, zipping it shut before speaking again. “You’ve got some nerve moving into my home, lady.” Two hours ago, he thought he’d made it clear to her that she was not welcome anywhere on his land. “Either go back to the bunkhouse for the night or find a hotel…preferably in Kansas!”
She lunged for the suitcase and sat on top of it before he could pick it up. “This is my house, too. I can stay here if I want. You can threaten me all you want, but I have rights. I asked my attorney, and she said I had the legal right to domicile on the plantation if I want…and I want.” She folded her arms across her chest as if that made it final. The hell it did.
He gripped the suitcase handle, looking at her a full three seconds to give her ample warning she had better move her West Coast derriere off the suitcase. When she just stared back with that stubborn look he’d seen much too often in the short time he’d known her, he figured they were at an impasse. Again. He shrugged his shoulders and yanked the suitcase off the bed, causing Elli to tumble to the floor. Her little prissy dog, resting on the bed pillow, raised her head and looked at her owner, sniffed, and put her head back down.
Excerpt
Lark Singer
THE GUYS ARE impatiently waiting for me. Bean’s foot jiggles so fast; it appears as if a current of electricity runs through him. We have to be down at Pearl’s by seven.
We’re all geeked about playing on stage, I can tell. Performing at Pearl’s gives us the face time we need for when it’s really going to count. The real event — the competition — is only a few weeks away. I pick up my pace, we have three hours to jam and grab some food before we go on stage.
“Come on, Chickie,” he says, gesturing with his sticks as he settles into position behind his drums.
Rushing forward, I plug in my amp. As I crank out a few chords to warm up, that old energy buzzes through my veins. After a couple of licks, I’m ready and my nimble fingers tingle. I’m wired. I love playing in front of a live audience. “Which one are we jamming on?” I look over at Bean and wait for his answer.
His brow creases as he tries to decide. “This one here.” He holds up the lead sheet and waves it impatiently in the air.
I squint to see it. It’s the one we titled “Secrets.” Pointing to the lead sheet sitting on Stevie’s stand, I get into position. I had taken a few minutes and titled Stevie’s lead sheets for him the other day.
He nods. “Thanks.”
Bean slams his sticks together and counts out. “One… two… three.”
We’re off, filling the garage with musical energy. My body’s rigid, as if every muscle’s flexed and ready for action. Screaming chords fill the air, as my nimble fingers crank on my Gibson. I feel like I’m a live electrical wire, popping and snapping with unrestrained energy.
When we’re done with that song, no one speaks. Instead, Bean holds up another lead sheet and then we’re off again. Tonight’s performance is going to be epic. I can tell just by how we’re coming together. I grin in spite of my intense concentration; my confidence is growing by leaps and bounds. We are so ready for this competition that I can feel it all the way down to my bones.
After the second song, I hold up my hand and say, “Our sound smokes. But don’t you think we should play some of the music we’re going to be performing tonight?”
Bean snorts. “Yeah. Probably.”
We take a few minutes and discuss some of the songs we want to play. We usually crank out tunes that were big hits in the seventies and eighties, a lot of Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and Rolling Stones. They’re more mellow than what we’ve been playing, but they’re still good melodies and the crowd at Pearl’s digs that classical sound. Playing this type of music broadens our musicianship, but there’s nothing like cranking out our own songs. After choosing a few of the harder tunes we immediately start jamming.
Interview with the Author
1. How long have you been writing?
I knew I wanted to be a writer in fifth grade, but I didn’t actually pursue publication until I was a stay at home mom. So, I would say I’ve actually been writing for about three years.
2. How long have you been a published author?
Three years. It’s been a lot of fun and a great learning experience.
3. What titles do you have available?
Besides the “Starlight Chronicles,” I have another series with three books in it. It’s the Super Spies series and it’s for the upper middle grade/lower young adult market. They’re mystery/thrillers and my oldest thinks they’re awesome.  He’s in fifth grade and read the first one over the summer. He’s currently working on book number two. I hope my writing inspires my boys to chase they’re dreams.
The three books in the Super Spies series are:
“The Super Spies and the Cat Lady Killer”
“The Super Spies and the High School Bomber”
“The Super Spies and the Pied Piper”
4. What made you choose the subject of this book?
It’s a funny story actually. I was watching a documentary with my hubby about one of our favorite bands. The band was RUSH and their bass player is Geddy Lee. I turned to my husband and said, “I want to be like Geddy Lee.” That’s when I decided to write the story of a young girl with big musical dreams and the obstacles she has to overcome to achieve them. Isn’t that funny how something so simple can turn into a series?
5. Do you have any new titles coming soon?
I’ve got a couple of works in process that I’m very excited about, but they’re not anywhere close to ready for publication. I’m excited about them because I love the characters and the storyline.
6. What is your favourite genre and why?
It’s hard to choose, but I love human drama stories and mystery/thrillers. Anything that pulls me in and doesn’t let go.
7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process?
Ohh, good question! I would have to say when I finish the rough draft and start editing. I love making the story stronger and better.
8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why?
Stephen King. I love the way he develops his characters.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Lisa Orchard grew up loving books. She was hooked on books by the fifth grade and even wrote a few of her own. She knew she wanted to be a writer even then. Her first published works are the “Super Spies Series.” These stories revolve around a group of friends who form their own detective squad and the cases they solve. “The Starlight Chronicles,” is the next series that Lisa created with musical misfit, Lark Singer as her main character.
After graduating from Central Michigan University with a Marketing Degree, she spent many years in the insurance industry, pining to express her creative side. The decision to stay home with her children gave her the opportunity to follow her dream and become a writer. She resides in Michigan with her husband, Steve, and two wonderful boys. Currently, she’s working on the next book in the Starlight Chronicles Series along with a few new ideas that may turn into stand alone novels. When she’s not writing she enjoys spending time with her family, running, hiking, and reading.
Excerpt:
Book I: A Father’s Fate
At one point, on the banks of a confluence where two rivers ran together like closing thighs, there was a certain boatman. This boatman, name of Gur, had a fine long pole (not too bendy, not too strong) with which to move his long wide boat upon the water. Gur slept with his pole, lest it go missing. Then one evening while he was ferrying a few paying passengers from one put-in to the next, Gur’s pole got stuck in thick river-bottom mud and muck and he lost his grip and the pole sank out of sight. Cursing, Gur leapt into the water and dove for the pole. Long minutes passed and Gur’s nubile daughter Guri, at the prow of the boat, began to wail. Gur did not come back up. They found him later downstream. This is how the girl Guri became a very young boatman with a shoddy pole.
The thing about Guri is that she knew everybody. All the fares on her boat. They didn’t necessarily know each other all too often, but everybody knew Guri. And somehow she knew everybody back. She just had a mind for it. Who went with whom and how the families fell out. Names. All the names Guri knew. But only one name made her sing: Tuc. Tuc drank and threw dice, but early in their acquaintance he’d made bold to say that Guri would make a good mother. This observation of Tuc’s about Guri had won her over, so she sang his name in the dark. One syllable songs are short, but carry on the water.
Guri’s favorite disgruntlement was that there was no word for girl boatman. It was poling-upriver hard to get more than a grunt out of half her older passengers, because they didn’t see clear to it being right for her to be doing a man’s job. Tuc suggested ‘boatwoman’, but Guri allowed as how that was more the busty mascot off the bow of a ship than a person who poled for a living. Tuc took to riding with Guri quite frequently. Then one night, he brought her a new pole, and it was a good pole.
Not long after the new pole, Tuc convinced Guri to elope with him a ways downriver to a town where he had prospects. When they got there, they traded the boat and pole for two goats. Guri was better with people than with animals, so Tuc tended the herd while she met and memorized every person she could find. Soon she had so much work taken in to do for folks that what with going to the big, clean houses to perform services inbetweentimes, and attending in good turn to the day’s worth of all the waiting piecemeal work filling their modest house, Guri was too busy to make a baby.
Guri got fed up with being too busy to make a baby and made a baby. Tuc split. Guri’s popularity made her fatherless child the ward of the town. Everybody parented him. That’s why he grew up angry. His name was Gur, after his grandfather. Boy did he have a chip on his shoulder about being told what to do. Everybody told him when and where to jump. Only Guri could make him ask how high. Usually his answer would be jump why? The thing about having a whole village full of parents is that they are going to contradict each other and some of them are bound to be weird people.
As in medical school, praxis then practicum: I saw one, did one, taught one… now I do one after the other. One novella after another I mean. And they’re good. I saw novellas while acquiring my Bachelor’s Degree in English Language and Literature/Letters with a minor in Psych at Indiana University in the mid-nineties, I taught and did novellas a few years later while pursuing a Master’s of Arts in Lit. at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and I have done a fancy set of five well here now (as I pursue an AAS in Accounting at a community college, btw). Excerpt:
Jax raked a hand over his hair. He did not want her to leave without him. That meant only one thing. He had to go to her and convince her they couldn’t be separated. He stood and cast his gaze on Ian. The boy slept soundly. Jax had to find a compromise by doing right by the boy and doing right by his heart.
He closed the door behind him gently and checked on Sophia’s room. She wasn’t there. Then he went downstairs. Peeking into the study, he saw Lady Charlotte placing covers over Lord Ridgecroft and making him comfortable. Could she be in the kitchen? He continued down the hall and caught a glimpse of two people sitting on a bench. Jeeves and Sophia. Fisting his hands, he drew in a breath and steeled up his courage.
Jax knocked on the glass of the french doors and stepped out. She looked up at him, sadness etched in her face.
“Can we talk?” he asked.
Jeeves glanced at Sophia. She offered the butler a small smile. “It’s fine.”
Jeeves stood and bowed. “If you’ll excuse me, I’ll finish my rounds and retire for the evening.”
“Good night, Jeeves,” Jax said.
The butler nodded and left.
“I had no idea I had a son. This was a surprise.”
“It’s clear the boy is yours,” she said, softly. “And so is your duty.”
“I won’t deny it,” Jax paused. “And I do want to get to know him, but I don’t want to lose you either.”
“I have to leave tomorrow.”
He pursed his lips, frustrated. “I knew Fiona briefly. I was attracted to her because she was kind, but I knew nothing would ever come of us. My father suggested she knew that, too, that’s why she never told me.”
“I’m sorry.” Sophia looked at her fingers in her lap, then up at him. “She should have contacted you. It would have been the right thing to do.”
He sighed and took the seat next to Sophia placing her hand between his. He snared her eyes with his stare. “The right thing to do is let me go with you tomorrow. I care for you.”
“I know what it’s like to lose a parent. I was twelve when my mother passed away. I still remember the little things, like her smile. I remember traveling all over Britain with her. When my mother passed away, a sadness filled my heart that I thought I would never replace. That little boy is hurting right now. He needs you.”
“He can come with us.” Jax just blurted out the first thought that came to his mind. If Sophia wanted Ian to be close to Jax, then it only made sense to have Ian come with them. Jax thought the idea was inspired.
Sophia’s mouth fell open, then she closed it, before she scrunched up her brows. “Are you serious? That we take a five-year-old traipsing all over Europe with us?”
“Why not? It’s the only way we can be all together.” He had no idea what it would entail, but what better way to solve his problem? He would get to know his son and remain close to Sophia.
Excerpt:
“You terrify me.”
Lance looked at her then. Maggie watched him, face open in a way that made his insides clench and his body tense. He understood the confusing, conflicting emotions she had for him, because he had them as well. Denial and acceptance—he constantly fought between the two.
“I should terrify you,” he told her. “I use people. I don’t care about anyone more than I care about myself. I’ve never loved anyone, but I’ve told tons of girls I did. I break hearts, and it doesn’t bother me. I’ll break yours, if you let me.”
“Crackling science fiction with gorgeous trans-human and cybernetic trimmings. Keith Stevenson’s debut novel soars.” – Marianne De Pierres, award-winning authors of the Parrish Plessis, Sentients of Orion and Peacemaker series
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt

Cait was waiting for Lex when he crossed back to his harness from the showers. Bren was with Harris at the core, and Nadira was still off somewhere, so she had a little time to herself. Her own shower had done nothing to relax her, and her neck felt stiff.

What Bren had told Cait about the package presented a whole raft of new worries. But right now it was Bren that was causing her the most anxiety. There had been a lot of hidden bigotry towards her before lift-off, from the top ranks of Space Admin down, and Cait had pushed hard to get her on the mission. Not just because she was a remarkable talent in the field of systems interfacing, but because Cait knew first hand how hard it was to escape the post-deluge Florida Ghettos. Cait was seven when her father had won the employment lottery and they’d moved to the space-tech conurb in Sub-California, old enough to remember the squalor and hopelessness of the place.

There’d been aBookCover_Horizon bond between the two women; Cait had felt they really trusted one another. Now she wasn’t so sure. She’d put Bren’s behaviour in med lab down to the effects of prolonged deepsleep, but the systems specialist had shown no signs of residual disorientation once she’d gone online to recover the package. She’d been lucid and precise in explaining to Cait what she’d found inside. But when Cait brought up Sharpe’s death, her responses had become vague and hesitant again. To Cait it felt as if she was trying hard not to remember something rather than she just couldn’t.

Lex was still towelling himself dry as he loped towards the harness. He tossed the towel at the webbing and shook his head, droplets of water cascading lazily away in the low-g. ‘What’s up?’ he said.

Cait folded her arms and leaned against the ring wall, looking away as he grabbed at the harness straps to steady himself and bent to open his floor locker.

‘I’ve been thinking about Bren’s link. Did you notice when it came online?’

He shrugged, standing as he pulled on the one-piece and pressed the adhesion surfaces together. ‘I didn’t see any kind of change at all.’

‘What about when you hooked up to her fault-finder?’

‘There was no change,’ he said, eyes narrowing. ‘What are you getting at?’

‘Well, if you didn’t observe a change in her responses, we can’t be sure the link wasn’t functioning before Bren woke up in med lab.’

‘Apart from the fact she said it wasn’t.’ He leaned against the harness and sized Cait up. ‘Has Harris been planting ideas in your head? You know what he’s like about enhanced humans.’

‘I haven’t spoken to anyone else about Bren.’

‘So what’s your motivation for doubting her word? I thought Bren was your friend, or does “things being different” extend to her too?’

Cait straightened. ‘Why are you insisting on making this personal? We had some fun together; it was nice. Now it’s over. But I’m still your commanding officer, and our situation is serious. As medical officer you oversaw Bren’s treatment in med lab. You were monitoring her EEG. You said she was in a coma. How do you explain her suddenly waking if there wasn’t any change in the readings?’

‘I suggest you ask Bren about that — she’s the expert.’

‘I’m asking you.’

‘I don’t know what’s gotten into you, Cait. Maybe I never really knew you at all.’ He picked up the wet towel and balled it in his fists. ‘I’m telling you what I saw. If you think something’s going on, you work it out.’

Cait pursed her lips for an instant. ‘Okay. I will.’ She pushed off the wall. ‘I’ll see you at the meeting.’

She sailed over to the central walkway, twisting in mid-air to rebound and put some distance between her and Lex. She hadn’t thought he’d be the type to act like a jilted lover. Childish and self-centred — there it was again. She should never have become involved. And she certainly didn’t have the mental space to deal with any fallout now. If he was moping over her, he’d have to work that one out on his own.
