(from Bleed Me Silicone):

My first memory is of the inside of a cardboard box. The material is gray and slightly rough to the touch. It smells of fluorescent light and ancient canyon floors.

I savor the feeling of being lifted from the shelf – rubbed and jostled against the almost-smooth interior of the box, as I’m carried through the aisles. My new owner places me on the till. The other products and I have talked about this day. Wondered when our time would come. The time to be purchased.

“Would you like a packet for that, ma’am?” the teller asks. I recognize his voice. He does stock-take on Sundays.

“Umm … yes,” says a nervous voice. Nervous, but forgiving. I like her already.

The crinkle-swoosh of plastic competes with the sound of a radio. Sunlight perforates the miniscule holes in the edges of the cardboard that encloses me. I feel warmth for the first time. She drives me home.

The roof of the box opens, and I’m out. In the world. Her face is just as I’d imagined. Elfin and freckled. No frown lines. Her eyes are intense as they follow my instructions.

I tingle at the touch of her fingers. Delicate, careful. Fleshy and warm. Her lips curl into a smile, before she places me at the back of a dark shelf. The other lubes at the store told me this would happen. Life’s not all action for us. But when our owners take us for a night out of the closet, the world comes alive. Or that’s what the other lubes say.

There aren’t many voices in her apartment. I wait patiently at the back of the closet, as the weeks and months pass. Just when I think she’s forgotten me, one warm evening the door of the apartment opens. A man sits on the creaky springs of the bed.

“Are you ready?” His voice is young. Excited.

“Yes,” she says. I know she’s trying not to sound nervous, like she did that day at the store when she purchased me.

And then it begins.

Future Winds
by Kevin Laymon

Set in a science fiction setting with elements of twisted horror, Future Winds is a strange yet wondrous tale of species self preservation and the all out moral cost of survival. Forced to leave earth, humanity discovers a planet capable of supporting life and hatches an audacious plan that will warp them across the universe to settle and begin anew. There is a darkness that resides below the planet’s surface, but with no option to turn back, humanity must find a way forward.

Chapter 12 excerpt:

Though humanities new planet is mostly desert, there is an abundance of lush and complex alien life that dwell below the hot surface.

The channel was lit up by neon flora of green and blue, beautiful little plants that swayed back and forth despite the lack of a breeze or draft to give them a push. Reaching out to touch one with his glove, the little blossom reacted by illuminating brighter, so much so that the exterior became transparent, and Tyler could see the thousands of cells within, that made up life for the spectacular flower.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

My name is Kevin Laymon. My passions are space exploration, music, sailing, snowboarding, wildlife, and of course writing. I have been writing for some time but the focus has been primarily on short stories and dark poems strictly for personal use. Future Winds is the first of a handful of novels I am working on for publication. I grew up in upstate New York and have lived up and down the east coast. New York is a location that holds a very special place in my heart. After working a wide range of jobs that I hated for far too long, Sara my significant other, and I decided earlier in 2015 to make some dramatic changes and travel. We scraped together some cash, I quit my job, and we moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where we live a libertarian life as vegetarians. We share our desertscape living quarters with an aquatic turtle named Taz and a rabbit named BunBear. On October 9th 2015 Sara & I got married in Las Vegas, Nevada. The sunshine in New Mexico has helped immensely in illuminating a greater perspective as to who I am and what I was placed on this planet to do; that is to teach and inspire. I have a hunger to awaken humanity so that we may break away from our programed way of thinking. Our minds are powerful and I encourage everyone to open them up, exercise them, and tap into the potential I know every living man woman and child has. Though my stories at times can be very dark there is a reason for everything I do. Perspective, perception, and relativity are everything in the world of literature.

Wild Irish Heart by Tricia O’Malley

Wild Irish Heart
by Tricia O’Malley

GENRE: paranormal romance

It is time…

An ancient book, a power untouched, and a heart unloved lead Keelin O’Brien from her graduate studies in Boston to a small village on the coast of Southern Ireland. Determined to unearth the secrets lying hidden in the enchanted waters of the cove, Keelin has little time for a surly Irishman who infuriates her during the day and haunts her fantasies at night.

Inexplicably drawn to the woman who has stepped from his dreams and into his world, Flynn fights a stubborn battle against his increasing attraction for Keelin. Forces unknown have better plans for the two.

Only the secrets of the cove can show Keelin who she really is, the beauty of her mysterious power, and a love that will break the bounds of what she knows.

From New York Times Bestselling author, Tricia O’Malley, comes a new romance series set on the rocky shores of Ireland.

“I suppose I should thank you,” Keelin stuttered. She tried to regain her composure as she lifted her chin at him.

“Of all the…how do I end up with the woman that is stubborn as all get-out?”

Flynn said to himself as he started the motor and whipped towards shore. Keelin pulled the towel that he had handed around her and tried to get warm.

“You know, most women would have thrown themselves on me in gratitude. You know, promising anything I wanted? Offers of undying devotion? Baked goods? No. You can barely thank me.” Flynn glared at her.

Keelin stared regally at him from across the boat.

“I am sure I would have been fine. I just needed to cut across the current is all, and I was a bit disoriented.”
“A bit? You were a quarter mile out! You were shark bait. A goner! What were you even thinking? Are you insane?” Flynn lost it as they motored quietly into the cove. His shouts echoed off the walls of the empty cove and Ronan went silent on the beach.

“Hey! You aren’t the boss of me! I’ll have you know that I am a trained diver. I study this. This is what I do.”

“Trained? Hardly! If you were trained you would know not to go diving alone and perhaps maybe to study the waters ahead of time and know that there is a nine-knot current that runs outside the cove. Had I not been out fishing today and heard your cry for help you would have been gone in minutes!” Flynn cut the motor and raged at her.

Keelin stood up on shaky legs and yelled at him.

“I’ll have you know that I am a professional!”

“A professional pain in the ass!”

They were nose to nose in the rocking boat. Keelin’s breath huffed out and her chest heaved.

Flynn sighed and laid his forehead against hers, surprising her.

“Just. Just don’t ever do that again. Please.”

The Riesa Series by LD Towers

Teufel and New Austrian Order
by LD Towers

GENRE: Military fiction

1938. Germany is moving faster than Standartenführer Hagen Kohl thought possible. Sent down to Vienna to investigate a potential threat to Hitler’s plans for Austria, Hagen is drawn in to an aristocratic world he’s never encountered before. Without Hauptsturmführer Eugen Friesler at his side, Hagen is in more danger than he could have imagined as he hunts for a shadowy organization called the New Austrian Order. Back in Germany, Galiena von Steinberg returns to Riesa and the von Steinberg Gesellschaft, but taking over the reins of her Grandfather’s empire comes with many challenges. Can she protect her family holdings while keeping true to the new sense of self she has worked so hard to find?

BLURB FOR TEUFEL:MediaKit_BookCover_Teufel

Against the politically charged background of Nazi Germany’s police state, Standartenführer Doctor Hagen Kohl is trying to carve out a profession for himself in the SS. A middle class intellectual with a doctorate in Literature, Hagen is a an investigator who hunts criminals within the party apparatus itself. Hagen justifies everything by his personal code and patriotism, unable to see the flaws of the regime he serves. When he is ordered to investigate members of the army, he discovers patriotism is entirely a matter of perspective. His eyes are further opened by exposure to Galiena von Steinberg; an aristocrat whose own experiences bring him into the entanglements and intrigues at the highest levels of Third Reich society.

Excerpt for NAO:

Hagen nodded at his acquaintance, Standartenführer Heinrich ‘Gestapo’ Müller, as they passed on the walkway. Gestapo Müller and Hagen worked well together and were polite to one another, but there was always something between them. Hagen was a highly educated man; he held a doctorate in German literature. Müller was a former Munich vice detective who had worked his way up through the ranks before being brought into the SS by Reinhard Heydrich. Hagen was known to be ruthless, but Müller was a step beyond. Cold, calculating and completely without morality when it suited him, Müller’s penchant for physical brutality and torture were well known in the Gestapo. Müller thought nothing of beating a man to the edge of death to wring a confession from him, and Hagen could not look at Müller’s coarse hands without thinking he could see dried blood on the skin. It was that image which always leapt to Hagen’s mind whenever he saw the man. Blood crusted fingernails.

“Well, afternoon, Teufel! What brings you outside on this piss poor day?” Müller always called Hagen by his nickname, echoing their mutual master, Gruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich.

“Going to see the boss,” Hagen nodded, aware Müller would know which one.

“Lucky you,” Müller replied snidely. “But then you are the fair haired boy, aren’t you?”

Hagen cocked a brow at Müller. “Is that what they’re calling me?”

“Heydrich might have said it, yes, but then he is out of favour at the moment and he so hates competition,” Müller snorted derisively. “Watch yourself. The RF might like you, but you don’t want Heydrich to get jealous. He isn’t above making your life difficult.”

Interview with the Author:

1. How long have you been writing?
I wrote my first full length novel when I was 16. It was a Star Trek:TNG book about Mr. Worf and is presently available over at As for poetry, short stories and the like? I think I’ve been writing since I was younger. There have been a lot of half finished things since that time. Then I wrote Teufel in 2003, published it in 2007, and have been going ever since.

2. How long have you been a published author?
That’s almost a trick question. I was published as a poet in 1992 in grade 10. It was a poem that would never get published if you wrote it in today’s climate. It was about a hitman, and the poem was called 1-800-666-SLAY. It was in a school district anthology. I was a morbid little thing back in the day. To be truthful, not much has changed. My first published novel was Teufel in 2007.

3. What titles do you have available?
Teufel, New Austrian Order (the new one! Hooray!) and a novella called The Airport. I went into a bit of a doldrum for a while when I was in Berlin. Lots of acting like an artist without doing my art. Berlin is a strange place. People move there to become artists and end up creatively moribund. I know four artists who had the exact same problem.

4. What made you choose the subject of this book?
It’s a continuation of Teufel, which is set in Nazi Germany in the 1937. That time period really fascinates me. I was a military historian who only studied WWI. Absolutely wasn’t interested in WWII. Then I saw a documentary about the Third Reich in Colour, and it just twigged something. It almost felt like a memory of a place I had never been, but seeing it in colour, it made it seem real. My research focus changed- I became very interested in the paramilitary organisations of the National Socialist party and decided to write a book which would show them as they were.

The SS in particular- the truth is stranger than the fiction. When you see the footage on the history channel, you see men in terrifying black uniforms and it seems monolithic. Start researching that organisation, and you find so very many unexpected things. An example- if two SS officers had a beef, they were allowed to sort it out in a duel. They had an entire handbook devoted to the subject. How odd is it that as late as the 1930s, two men could go have a legally sanctioned shootout to sort out an argument?

5. Do you have any new titles coming soon?
I do! A book about a Canadian officer hunting for a serial killer on the Western Front of WWI, which will come out early next year and really new, genre busting piece with my take on vampires but as yet nameless also coming. I’m pretty nervous about that one. It’s right off my reservation in terms of topic. I don’t really do supernatural.

6. What is your favourite genre and why?
Military and historical fiction. It’s easy for me. I can do the research and the story flows. Human history is so full of amazing events. I particularly like military history because of how people change in times of conflict. It’s like a crucible. It renders us down to our most basic parts. The seemingly brave can become cowards and mice can become lions. It shows us at our very best and very worst. It’s brilliant for character development.

7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process?
I love the research. It can get a bit all consuming when I’m in the zone. Then my poor family suffers with me spouting off about my latest historical nuggets. I also like character development. Often my characters go off in directions which surprise even me. The Grandmaster of the New Austrian Order is absolutely not who I originally intended then suddenly it just fit for that character to step into that role. But who that actually is- well, that’s a secret for the sequel to New Austrian Order- Anschluss.

8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why?
David Eddings is my God. If I could have 1/10th of his skill at dialogue, I would be happy. I love his character interaction.

Thank you for spending a few minutes with me and my readers.

The Face Transplant by R. Arundel

The Face Transplant
by R. Arundel

GENRE: Medical Suspense Thriller

The Face Transplant

An epic journey of suspense, murder, and sacrifice

Dr. Matthew MacAulay is a facial transplant surgeon at a prestigious New York hospital. When his friend and mentor, Tom Grabowski, dies under mysterious circumstances, Matthew uncovers his friend’s secret: a new technique that allows perfect facial transplants. No incisions, no scars. Tom was able to accomplish this monumental feat with the help of Alice, a supercomputer robot with almost human abilities. While trying to find the people responsible for murdering Tom, Matthew realizes he is the prime suspect. He must flee for his life with the help of Dr. Sarah Larsson, a colleague and reluctant helper, who has a secret of her own, and Alice, who helps them make sense of a baffling series of seemingly unrelated events. The clues carry Matthew and Sarah around the world. They stumble onto a sinister plot of monumental proportions that leads Matthew all the way to the White House.

The Face Transplant is a powerful medical suspense thriller of the first order. The novel was written by a surgeon who weaves politics, medicine, and espionage into a tightly paced, intelligent thriller.

Matthew, “Sarah, I know. The tremors, the leg weakness. I put it all together. ALS.”

“My Sherlock Holmes at work again.” Sarah laughs.

“I know and I don’t care.”

Sarah smiles at Matthew. “Do you know what you’re saying?” “ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. A progressive neuro-muscular disorder with no cure. You will stop walking one day, and finally, you will lose control of all your muscles.”

“Not bad, Holmes.”

“We surgeons aren’t as thick as you think.”

“Then you know I don’t have long.” Sarah punches in the code to lock the anesthetic machine.

“I don’t care. I need you,” says Matthew.

“You know what my life will be very soon, how it is going to end.”

“I don’t care. I have to take a chance—I have to live. Give me that chance.”

“In the end I would regret doing that to you. I refuse to have you

look after me in the prime of your life. I’m going to be on a ventilator, not able to move any muscle in my body. I’m going to end up being only able to use my eyes. Totally locked in a useless body.”

Writing tips

I think writing is a craft. Over time it is assured you will get better at your craft. The best way to go about learning how to write a novel is to write a novel.

Be prepared for a long journey if you embark on a writing career. Each book helps to improve your writing skills, you are learning your craft.

Writing in many ways reminds me of actors in terms of possible career arcs. Some actors achieve fame with an early role to languish for the rest of a long career with little or no further success. Some actors toil in obscurity for many years and indeed their entire careers.

Sometimes luck can play in a role in your success. When in a career with the possibilities of ups and down and long periods of little or no recognition of your efforts you have to have the mindset to withstand these tribulations. Building a support group of fellow writers helps. You’re not in this alone. Another writer will sympathize with your poor reviews. They’ll understand how you feel when your book is not met with the success you were sure it would receive. Write for the love of writing because it probably will not make you rich. I’m not saying don’t try to be rich, but probably a better goal would be to try to write books that find an audience. Respect your reader, find out who your reader is and know that reader intimately.

There is no greater feeling than writing a great passage or feeling you got that chapter just right. This is what will sustain you and try to remember this feeling. Build a life outside of writing. This will help support you.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

R. Arundel is a practicing surgeon. This experience brings realism to the story. The novel asks what would happen if a surgeon were to develop the perfect face transplant. This would allow people to have a new face, in essence create a new identity. You can create the perfect double, the perfect Doppelganger.

Featured Author: Lisa Orchard

My featured author today is Lisa Orchard.

Her series The Starlight Chronicles is set at a very special price of just .99.

Please take a few minutes to get to know this author and her books. You can find all her books at the Amazon link just below her picture. Thank you Lisa for allowing me to feature you and your books!

Lisa Orchmediakit_authorphoto_starlightchroniclesard grew up loving books. She was hooked on books by the fifth grade and even wrote a few of her own. She knew she wanted to be a writer even then. Her first published works are the “Super Spies Series.” These stories revolve around a group of friends who form their own detective squad and the cases they solve. “The Starlight Chronicles,” is the next series that Lisa created with musical misfit, Lark Singer as her main character.

After graduating from Central Michigan University with a Marketing Degree, she spent many years in the insurance industry, pining to express her creative side. The decision to stay home with her children gave her the opportunity to follow her dream and become a writer. She resides in Michigan with her husband, Steve, and two wonderful boys. Currently, she’s working on the next book in the Starlight Chronicles Series along with a few new ideas that may turn into stand alone novels. When she’s not writing she enjoys spending time with her family, running, hiking, and reading.

Lark Singer
THE GUYS ARE impatiently waiting for me. Bean’s foot jiggles so fast; it appears as if a current of electricity runs through him. We have to be down at Pearl’s by seven.

We’re all geeked about playing on stage, I can tell. Performing at Pearl’s gives us the face time we need for when it’s really going to count. The real event — the competition — is only a few weeks away. I pick up my pace, we have three hours to jam and grab some food before we go on stage.

“Come on, Chickie,” he says, gesturing with his sticks as he settles into position behind his drums.

Rushing forward, I plug in my amp. As I crank out a few chords to warm up, that old energy buzzes through my veins. After a couple of licks, I’m ready and my nimble fingers tingle. I’m wired. I love playing in front of a live audience. “Which one are we jamming on?” I look over at Bean and wait for his answer.

His brow creases as he tries to decide. “This one here.” He holds up the lead sheet and waves it impatiently in the air.
I squint to see it. It’s the one we titled “Secrets.” Pointing to the lead sheet sitting on Stevie’s stand, I get into position. I had taken a few minutes and titled Stevie’s lead sheets for him the other day.

He nods. “Thanks.”

Bean slams his sticks together and counts out. “One… two… three.”

We’re off, filling the garage with musical energy. My body’s rigid, as if every muscle’s flexed and ready for action. Screaming chords fill the air, as my nimble fingers crank on my Gibson. I feel like I’m a live electrical wire, popping and snapping with unrestrained energy.

When we’re done with that song, no one speaks. Instead, Bean holds up another lead sheet and then we’re off again. Tonight’s performance is going to be epic. I can tell just by how we’re coming together. I grin in spite of my intense concentration; my confidence is growing by leaps and bounds. We are so ready for this competition that I can feel it all the way down to my bones.

After the second song, I hold up my hand and say, “Our sound smokes. But don’t you think we should play some of the music we’re going to be performing tonight?”

Bean snorts. “Yeah. Probably.”

We take a few minutes and discuss some of the songs we want to play. We usually crank out tunes that were big hits in the seventies and eighties, a lot of Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and Rolling Stones. They’re more mellow than what we’ve been playing, but they’re still good melodies and the crowd at Pearl’s digs that classical sound. Playing this type of music broadens our musicianship, but there’s nothing like cranking out our own songs. After choosing a few of the harder tunes we immediately start jamming.

Book 1 Gideon Lee

Lark Singer’s relationship with her mother is prickly to say the least. As she enters a musical competition that could launch her career, Lark also searches for answers her mother would rather keep hidden. Throw into the mix the fact her best friend Bean has been acting strangely, and Lark finds herself launched into uncharted territory. Will her quest for answers sabotage her musical aspirations?

Book 2 Lark Singer

Lark Singer is seventeen years old and already on the way to a brilliant music career. As she and her band, Starlight, gear-up for an upcoming, life-changing band competition, though, life seems to be throwing her a few curve balls. GENRE: Mystery, with minor romance

All Detective Matt Conley ever wanted was to raise a family in Ocean Park with his stunning and ambitious wife Lisa. When a corpse is found in his church, Matt begins a journey that reveals corruption and decay in his city and deceit in his marriage. As he searches for the murderer of a local businessman, a gang war erupts for control of the city’s drug trade, and the body count rises. With his reluctant new partner, Detective Lloyd Kendricks, Matt weaves his way through the puzzling connections between street gangs, politicians, bikers, and a private kink club.

Will their unlikely alliance be enough to return Matt’s beloved hometown to its halcyon days? And will he find the faith he needs to rebuild his crumbling marriage?

Exclusive excerpt:

The song ended. Dancers left the floor and blocked Conley’s way. He studied them, searching for Carrie. Odd task, trying to compare flesh, blood, and hair with Sage’s pencil sketches. He recognized one couple, but couldn’t remember the names Sage had written under their portraits.

A young brunette next—Mary? Marie?

Marcie, that was it. And Peter, thin face and smiling lips, was right behind.

One by one, Sage’s pencil people came alive and blossomed into three dimensions.

Toni stepped away from the crowd, dancing a slow grind with someone who was not her husband Dan.

Linda drank wine from a fluted glass. When it was finished, she turned and scooped a new one from a tray.

Artie’s eyes darted around the floor, inspecting female bodies as if they were cattle.

Conley walked past, through a mix of perfume, cologne, and booze so pungent it seemed to wet the air, and he saw Carrie. She looked as tired as her picture, eyes narrowed to slits, hair tousled as if she’d just woken. He trapped her in a corner. She tried to pass.

“Carrie,” he said. “Sage sent me.”

Sage’s picture of her was spot on. The upturned face spoke resignation and failure. Pupils were dilated and words slurred.

“Yeah?” she said dreamily, tilting her head. “Sage?”

“She said you’d help me find Victor’s killer.”

“Victor’s dead? Bummer. You a cop?”

“Hell, no.”

“Then why do you care?”

“He owed me money.”

That, she understood.

Thompson had made it to the other side of the dance floor. He signaled her.

“Someone in the Paladin threatened Victor. Do you know who?”

Carrie closed her eyes and knit her brow. “I remember. It wasn’t us. Victor came with a friend—Richard—and they argued. He threatened to kill Victor, not us. They had a big blowout, Liam was pissed.”

Liam. Sage had thought him important enough to bring his picture to Conley’s boat, and her voice had quavered when she spoke his name. He gets what he wants, doesn’t take no for an answer. He’s rough with the girls sometimes—the willing and the unwilling.

The fourth anniversary of Olivia’s daddy and John Lennon’s death is approaching. Like the shot heard ’round the world, TV and radio stations keep the frenzy alive and recognize Lennon’s life, while Olivia’s mama remembers Daddy’s death. Instead of healing, Mama’s strange behavior keeps getting worse.

After viewing an afternoon talk show, Olivia discovers her mother might have more than a case of eccentricity – she may be mentally ill. When those fears are confirmed, Olivia is faced with more decisions than any sixteen-year-old should have to make. With no adult family members to turn to, she is forced to trust the only people who’ve offered help: one strange man and a friend her mother makes at the mental institution.

Facing the intricacies of her mother’s illness one minute and the decision to have sex with her new boyfriend the next, Olivia finds that through faith and determination, she can conquer it all in this poignant story of love, intuition, compassion, and hope.

p. 49

Jonzie got up off the bench. She paced the ground with her head down. I thought she was about to give me another lecture, like the skiing one.

“When Michael died, my mama went to Central State, too. I didn’t tell anyone. My daddy brought her there. She wouldn’t talk, cook, clean, or do anything. She just lay around like she was dead but still breathing. I didn’t even care ’cause I felt the same way.” She stopped pacing and took a deep breath. “But . . . instead, I hurt myself on the outside so the inside wouldn’t feel so bad.”

Jonzie pushed up the right leg of her jeans and exposed the rest of her calf. Scars like ladder rungs ran from the top of the flame on her tattoo to just above her knee. I’d never noticed them before, probably because I was always gaping at her tattoo, thinking about getting one myself, or maybe because Jonzie never exposed her legs completely. She wore straight legs all the time and cuffed the bottoms so you could only see her tattoo. In gym, she wore knee socks.

“Michael and I always talked about our plans. You know, we were gonna rent a camper and drive across the country after we finished high school and go to San Francisco. First, we were gonna go to Alabama, then Mississippi, then stop in Arkansas and visit some friends and family. We were gonna go to Colorado and try snow skiing, then Vegas and pull the one arm bandits, and finally, San Francisco and ride the cable cars. And for our ultimate goal, we planned to roller skate down Lombard Street.”

Each time Jonzie mentioned one of these places, she pointed at another deep-lined scar. When she finished, she let go of her pant leg, and it slid back down to her ankle.

“Whenever I felt bad, I’d think about each place that Michael and I were planning to go, and I’d slash the side of my leg like I was crossing the date off a calendar. Sometimes I still do. I just ran out of states.”
