 Kate slid off her chair and joined him by the stove, carrying the bowl of lemon juice. She covered the hand that rested on the counter with hers. “When I first time traveled I thought it was a wonderful adventure, a fairy tale. I met the man of my dreams. I love that world. But so much has happened since that first year, it’s not a fairy tale anymore. Sadness and evil crept into that life, making it …”

“Like real life?” Drew finished. “That’s because it is. We’re just lucky enough to travel back to that time. Don’t ask why. We were meant to do this.”

“To do what? Keep changing history?” Kate gave him a sad smile.

“Maybe? The story isn’t finished yet. We have to guard that world, Kate. All of us. We swore our allegiance to it.”

“You make us sound like a secret society.”

“In a way, we are. You and me, your mom and dad, Maya and Carl.” Drew poured the lemon over the chicken.

“Don’t forget Lindsey.”

“And her boyfriend, Charlie.” He held up the fork he used to flip the meat.

Kate laughed. “How could I forget?” She wrapped her arms around Drew’s waist. “Thanks for making me feel better.”

He kissed the top of her head. “Glad to help. Now let’s eat.”

“That’s right. I almost forgot. I’m supposed to be dessert.”

“Then we need to get started.”
