GENRE: Inspirational (Amish)
Annie Mast and Levi Miller were childhood best friends until his father was shunned. Now, 10 years later, Levi returns to Arthur, Il, and he and Annie discover their bond is as strong as ever. Soon they begin imagining a future together, but that’s unlikely to happen. Levi is part of the English world, and Annie is Amish. But together, with love on their side, they may just find their way to an answered prayer.
Annie came back to reality. “Sorry, Mamma.”
She faced a dubious expression. “You’ve got your mind on something.” Her mother faced her. “It wouldn’t be that Miller boy, would it?”
Annie pretended a sudden interest in cleaning the sink, running her cotton towel over the stainless steel. “Why would you think that, Mamma?”
“Ever since yesterday, you’ve been acting like you’re off in some other world.” She lifted her palms to the sky. “You even forgot to close the door when you stepped outside. You know he lives different from us, Annie.”
Her mother’s statement had come out in a lowered, serious tone.
“I know, Mamma. But I still like him. Always did.”
Suddenly, an uneasy feeling filled Annie’s gut. She held the colander while Mamma carefully poured curds into it. Annie’s favorite part of the process was hanging the curds to dry.
“Don’t you think our community was a bit harsh on Levi’s dad?”
“Honey, the Ordnung has been around for years. Those who choose not to follow it know the repercussions. Rules are rules.”
Still holding the colander, which became heavier by the second, Annie focused on keeping it perfectly still. Her arms shook a little. “But wouldn’t God want us to forgive?”
Her mother pushed out a sigh as the last drop of yellowish mixture came out of the stainless-steel cooker. Hot steam hit her face. Annie was glad to return the colander to the sink and step away from the intense heat.
She sat down on a beautiful dark walnut chair made by her father and looked up. Annie searched her mom’s face and awaited a response. None came. But it didn’t matter. Annie knew what her answer was.
