Beautiful Mess

by John Herrick

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Mainstream fiction (romantic comedy) — multigenerational ensemble cast
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A fallen star. Four Los Angeles misfits.
And the Marilyn Monroe you only thought you knew.

Del Corwyn is an aging relic. An actor who advanced from errand boy to Academy Award nominee, Del kept company with the elite of Hollywood’s golden era and shared a close friendship with Marilyn Monroe. Today, however, he faces bankruptcy.

Humiliated, Del is forced to downgrade his lifestyle, sell the home he’s long cherished, and fade into a history of forgotten legends—unless he can revive his career. All he needs is one last chance. While searching through memorabilia from his beloved past, Del rediscovers a mysterious envelope, dated 1962, containing an original screenplay by Marilyn Monroe—and proof that she named him its legal guardian.

Del surges to the top of Hollywood’s A-list overnight. But the opportunity to reclaim his fame and fortune brings a choice: Is Del willing to sacrifice newfound love, self-respect and his most cherished friendship to achieve his greatest dream?

A story of warmth, humor and honesty, Beautiful Mess follows one man’s journey toward love and relevance where he least expects it—and proves coming-of-age isn’t just for the young.

Excerpt:

 “I have an intriguing prospect for a new film,” Del replied as he took a seat. He tapped the manila envelope tucked under his arm, which contained Marilyn’s script.

He could’ve sworn he caught Arnie in the onset of an eye roll brought to a sudden halt.

“What kind of project?”

“A pop-culture type of thing. You could say it has a retro feel to it.”

Arnie sighed. “Del, I realize you like to relive the past—”

“This is a winner, Arnie. I guarantee it.”

“And what does this winning project involve?”

“Marilyn Monroe. It’s a screenplay.”

“With all due respect, isn’t that a bit clichéd? This would need to be an angle no one else has covered. Many people have done films about Marilyn Monroe, not to mention books and memorabilia and everything else under the sun.”

“You don’t understand. This isn’t about Marilyn Monroe.” Del felt a surge of adrenaline and couldn’t contain himself. He leaned forward and, with great pomp, planted the thick package on Arnie’s desk. It landed with a thump. “It’s by Marilyn Monroe.”

Arnie sat open-mouthed as he tried to follow along. His eyes widened in perplexity. “By Marilyn Monroe,” he repeated.

“That’s right.”

“Del, what the hell are you talking about?”

With a lighthearted laugh, Del eased back into the chair. “Last night, I rummaged through some boxes I’d stored away long ago. Hadn’t looked through them in years. Relics from my heyday. Things I’d forgotten I’d saved. And at the bottom of one of those boxes, I found this.”

He patted the envelope, which crinkled at his touch.

“It’s a script, given to me in 1962.” Del caught Arnie’s eye to make sure the man paid full attention. “Written by Marilyn Monroe.”

Interview with the Author:

  1. How long have you been writing?

At eight years old, after completing a class assignment, I looked over at what a friend was doing to pass the time. She was writing a short story. It looked like fun, so I decided to give it a try—and fell in love with it. I’ve been a writer ever since. I still remember that day. How many moments in our lives look and feel ordinary, but turn out to be milestones? You never know what a day will contain. It’s worth getting up every day and giving it your best.

  1. How long have you been a published author?

That came much later! I was 29 when I wrote my first novel, The Landing, which ended up being my second book release. Before I could write a novel, I needed a variety of life experiences, including years in the IT field, where I developed discipline, as well as experience in analysis, project management, identifying holes in logic, and other skills necessary for me to harness my creative impulses. Left unchecked, creativity will tug you in many directions, and you end up accomplishing nothing, or perhaps accomplishing nothing well. The blessing in waiting so long for a dream to manifest is how much more you appreciate it.

  1. What titles do you have available?

Here they are, in order of release:

 From the Dead

The Landing

8 Reasons Your Life Matters – nonfiction, and you can find the e-book version free!

Between These Walls

Hit and Run

Beautiful Mess

  1. What made you choose the subject of this book?

Beautiful Mess is my first novel to feature a historical person. I’m a fan of Marilyn Monroe’s films. I can never get enough of The Seven-Year Itch! But long before I ever watched her films, I wondered what tragedy must have existed beneath her public persona. Years ago, I read a biography of her and learned that a close acquaintance betrayed her trust, which forced Marilyn into a mental institution against her will. She was trapped, all alone, unable to end it. She was at the mercy of others. I thought to myself, “That experience must have left scars. Nobody could escape it unchanged.” I couldn’t shake it. I sensed a story there, so I tucked the idea away. Five years later, it became the impetus for Beautiful Mess.

  1. Do you have any new titles coming soon?

I have another romantic comedy set for release late next year. Similar in tone to Beautiful Mess, but with characters on the opposite end of the age spectrum from Beautiful Mess’s Del. It’s a fun read! I’ve had it in the works for years, tinkering with it.

  1. What is your favourite genre and why?

When it comes to personal reading, my go-to genre is suspense, particularly legal and political. For some reason, politics and history have always fascinated me. At the risk of exposing what a nerd I was, when I was about 10 years old, I bought a set of flashcards that highlighted all the American presidents, with their image on the front and facts on the back. I plastered them on my wall the way other kids put up posters! I pored over those facts.

 And ever since reading John Grisham in my late teens, I’ve gravitated toward legal fiction. My favorite class at university was a business law course. Loved it so much, I was tempted to go to law school—until I asked myself Why?, since I never want to be a lawyer!

  1. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process?

The most exciting part is the part that DOESN’T involve writing—it’s hearing the impact that a book has made on someone’s life. When someone tells me they enjoyed the book or that it helped pull them through a painful time, it means the world to me. People are more important than things, including book “things.”

 In terms of the writing process itself, I love delving into the psychological aspects of my characters. I drop them  into uncomfortable scenarios, then watch them react. To do that, I need to consider their personalities, backgrounds, insecurities, and so forth, because those motivate their actions. For me, it’s critical to keep my stories plausible. That means I can’t force my characters to do what I want them to do; I need to give them the same freedom I have in my own life. How often do we picture how a real-life event will unfold, only to discover people didn’t behave the way we expected? It’s because they respond according to their personality, not ours. So the challenge is to create a compelling story without interfering more than necessary.

  1. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why?

Oh, my! To be honest, I think I would work with someone who has a lot of talent but who doesn’t yet have a novel under their belt, or who has only one. A writer can identify story talent in the raw, before anyone else can. I seem to be able to identify raw talent in individuals, too, in creative fields and also standard professional fields. I’d love to find someone who has extraordinary talent in seed form, mentor that person, help them find their voice, and help them discover the thrill of achieving a long-term goal. The one requirement is that the person realizes nothing substantive in life comes easy—I’ve noticed a shortage of people who understand that.

 If I had to select a published author, I’d want to consider it an opportunity to learn from them, so I’d pick someone who is a master at what they do. My unique strength seems to be in character development and bringing emotions to life, so perhaps I’d work with someone who wants to add an extra dose of it to what they do—a win-win situation for both of us. James Patterson is a master at crafting a story with nonstop suspense and solid commercial appeal. So if he wanted to increase the emotional side of a character, maybe I could bring that to the table, if that were his goal. But John Grisham would be another, since he’s the reason I fell back in love with books.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

A self-described “broken Christian,” John Herrick battled depression since childhood. In that context, however, he developed intuition for themes of spiritual journey and the human heart.

Herrick graduated from the University of Missouri—Columbia. Rejected for every writing position he sought, he turned to information technology and fund development, where he cultivated analytical and project management skills that helped shape his novel-writing process. He seized unpaid opportunities writing radio commercial copy and ghostwriting for two nationally syndicated radio preachers.

The Akron Beacon Journal hailed Herrick’s From the Dead as “a solid debut novel.” Published in 2010, it became an Amazon bestseller. The Landing, a semifinalist in the inaugural Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest, followed. Publishers Weekly predicted “Herrick will make waves” with his novel Between These Walls.

Herrick’s nonfiction book 8 Reasons Your Life Matters introduced him to new readers worldwide. The free e-book surpassed 150,000 downloads and hit #1 on Amazon’s Motivational Self-Help and Christian Inspiration bestseller lists. Reader response prompted a trade paperback.

His latest novel, Beautiful Mess, folds the legend of Marilyn Monroe into an ensemble romantic-comedy.

Herrick admits his journey felt disconnected. “It was a challenge but also a growth process,” he acknowledges. “But in retrospect, I can see God’s fingerprints all over it.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BookCover_The-Reluctant-Debutante-FINAL
Excerpt:
chapter 3 – first sparks 
Victoria was beginning to feel quite miserable. She was soaked from head to toe, most of her body immersed in the water. Her heavy skirts were feeling like lead weights as they pulled her towards the current. Her boots were slowly sinking into the sludge on the river bottom. And the gorgeous stranger was now looking at her appraisingly.
“Can you reach my hand?”
Victoria felt a shiver slither up her back at the sound of his deep voice as he leaned down for her.
Wishing there were some other way, Victoria looked at him then up and down the river once more. Unfortunately, the riverbanks had not changed in the last few minutes and there was still no way to get up the bank on her own. Turning back to the stranger, she gritted her teeth and stretched out her hand.
Bryghton was struck by the young woman’s beauty. Her remarkable eyes held so much expressive emotion. He could tell she was scared and embarrassed but she had the wit to realize she had little choice if she wished to be rescued from her precarious position. The duke knew that not too much farther downstream the river deepened considerably.
The feel of her cold little hand in his large, warm one sent a strange sensation through him, but he knew this was not the time to be distracted. Despite her slight frame, her soaking clothes were weighing her down considerably, and effort would be required to get her out. In a similar gesture to hers, he too gritted his teeth and yanked on her arm.
With a plop, and after a swift scrabble up the bank, Victoria landed on the edge of the river next to the impeccably dressed, handsome stranger. Blushing again, she offered a shy, hesitant smile as she pushed herself to a seated position.
Interview with the Author:
  1. How long have you been writing?
I wrote a fair bit while I was in school but settled quite comfortably back into only being a reader after I graduated. While my love for books used to cause some family members to joke that I would be a writer some day, it never occurred to me that it might actually happen. And I never would have actually written that first book if not for a dare from my husband.
2. How long have you been a published author?
The first book I wrote was published in 2010. I started writing it in 2008, it took me about a year to finish it and then almost another year to find a publisher.
3. What titles do you have available?
All seven of my published books are sweet, regency romance.
Tempting the Earl
The Duke Conspiracy
The Governess’ Debut
The Debutante Bride
The Countess Intrigue
Sweet Surrender
The Reluctant Debutante
4. What made you choose the subject of this book?
I love the idea of the first meeting. I thought, what if you saw someone and were instantly attracted to them, only to find out that they were connected with your enemy. That is the introduction to my new release, The Reluctant Debutante.
5. Do you have any new titles coming soon?
My next book doesn’t yet have a title. It had a title, but I want that title for a different book so this one needs a new name. But titles are my weakness so I’m a little sad about it. It’s a great title. I wish I could use it twice 😀 But that would be ridiculous so I’m just going to have to work on it…
6. What is your favourite genre and why?
I was introduced to the works of Georgette Heyer when I was a young teenager by my favourite aunt and the rest is history. She writes the best regencies out there. She is why I write regencies myself. That is my favourite genre to read and write. But I love words so I will read pretty much anything, including the cereal box.
7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process?
First draft writing is pretty much like day dreaming – utterly relaxing and an absolute pleasure. Then the work begins with editing. But first draft writing is what keeps me doing this J
8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why?
I would love to write a book with my husband. I think we would make a great team if I could just get him to sit down and give it a bit of thought. It would be such a fun experience. I’ve mentioned to him several times that we should right a mystery or a thriller. He likes the idea but hasn’t actually managed to take the time to give it any real thought yet.
So Near the Horizon; Jessica Koch Author
So Near the Horizon
by Jessica Koch
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jessica Koch’s dramatic debut novel, Dem Horizont so nah (So Near the Horizon), broke every record when it hit stores in Germany 2016. Released through a small, independent publishing house, the e-book was an instant success, selling over 250,000 copies in just a few months and topping the Amazon bestseller list for more than six weeks – which made it the number-one bestselling German-language e-book of the year 2016!
Since then, one of Germany’s largest publishing houses has purchased the rights to this riveting and highly emotional memoir. The foreign rights have been picked up in numerous countries, and the feature film is scheduled to arrive in theaters at the end of 2018.
And now, for the first time ever, So Near the Horizon will be available in English! So Near the Horizon will hit online retailers in September 2017 – again as an independent publication, again without a huge marketing budget, but again with infinite passion for an unbelievable but true story that the world needs to hear.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BookCover_SoNeartheHorizon_cover_final

BLURB:

Seventeen-year-old Jessica has an uncomplicated life and a promising future. Leaving the house one evening, she has no idea that she’s about to meet the love of her life – or that her entire understanding of the world is about to change. And before long, she’s going to face a decision that will shape her forever…

In ‘So Near the Horizon’ Jessica Koch describes a life lived somewhere between hope and fear, confronting true events from her own past with raw honesty and frank reflection – and exploring more than one difficult subject along the way.

A story of deep love. A story of trust, courage, pain, despair, and the strength to let go. A true story.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
We were the weirdest little group in the world, but we were happy. Maybe we were naive, too, because none of us would ever have guessed that this would be our last summer together. If anyone had told us that, we’d have stared at them in disbelief, and then probably laughed in their face. At least, I think so. I should have just listened to Danny more carefully—what he said to me in Italy turned out to be true. His intuition was remarkable, and his gut never lied to him. But even considering all that, we’d never have imagined the circumstances that ended up separating us.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

AuthorPhoto_SoNearTheHorizon

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Jessica Koch (born in Ludwigsburg, Germany) began writing short stories when she was still in high school, but never submitted her work to publishers. In late 1999, shortly after beginning her studies to become an architectural drafter, she met Danny, a German-American dual national. Her experiences with him eventually formed the basis for So Near the Horizon, though it was nearly thirteen years before she felt ready to bring the manuscript to the public.

The author describes a life lived somewhere between hope and fear, between optimism and despair. She reflects on events from her own past with raw honesty, confronting more than one difficult subject along the way.

Jessica Koch lives near the city of Heilbronn with her husband, their son, and two dogs. The second and third books in the trilogy, So Near the Abyss and So Near the Ocean, are already best-sellers in Germany as well.

The author about her book :

I first committed the story of my love for Danny to paper all the way back in 2003. I wasn’t trying to become an author—I just thought writing would help me work through some of the emotional burden I was carrying around. I wrote the manuscript with a typewriter and sent copies to two publishing houses, although without any serious interest in their response. Which made the contract I was offered all the more surprising: someone wanted to publish my story.

So what did I do? I turned it down!

The idea of the whole world knowing my far-too-personal story frightened me so much that I burned the manuscript—in a huge fire in my parents’ garden, a fire that had just finished consuming all my photos of me and Danny. I never managed to burn the photos I wasn’t in, though, and I saved his letters and poems as well, packing them carefully away in a box in the basement until I was ready to close the book on the subject for good.

In 2010—at age 28—I moved to a new city, got married, and had a son. One day, I mentioned to my husband in passing that I’d once written a book and been offered a publishing contract. He asked more questions, and what had started as a short anecdote about Danny became a week-long report. Noticing that I clearly hadn’t come to terms with a few parts of the story, my husband advised me to write it all out (again). From that moment on, I spent every free minute writing.

For weeks, I ran around carrying paper and a pencil, confused, caught up in a completely different time. My notes developed into a highly emotional novel. Purely out of curiosity, I sent the manuscript to five literary agencies. Within a few weeks, four of them had expressed interest, and, after several long conversations with publishers, I finally agreed to put So Near the Horizon out into the world. What happened from then on, still feels like a dream…

The enthusiastic response I received from readers prompted me to continue the series, and So Near the Abyss as well as So Near the Ocean, the second and third books in the Danny Trilogy, were released later on.

At first, Clay remained silent. When Jace was about to prompt him again, he finally began to open up. “A long time ago, I thought I did the right thing. It hurt like hell to do it. Then I did something else that seemed to be the honorable thing. And that went bad, too. I paid for it all for twelve long years. Now, Kaitlyn comes back here because her grandmother needed to see her. I thought I was beyond all the feelings, all the memories and the pain from a dozen years ago. But turns out, I am still the world’s biggest fool. I put my heart out there once again. The Forgiveness Solution

by Rev. Misty Tyme

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Self-help / spiritual / inspiration
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

All major religions and societies agree forgiveness is a good idea. But what they haven’t taught us is how to forgive. The Forgiveness Solution gives you the how in a proven step by step formula that brings relief from the hurt and puts you on the road to living a happy, healthy life.

Rev. Misty teaches you how to shift your perspective and adjust your expectations of people and situations, so you can move past the pain of un-forgiveness. Rev. Misty draws upon her intensely personal experiences of facing deep sadness, anger, and grief with the power of forgiveness. She meets you where you are and helps you walk through your forgiveness journey.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cover art
Excerpt:
How do you forgive yourself for a behavior you are not proud of? After talking to many people, I was relieved to find out I am not the only one with this dilemma. We all make unintentional mistakes and bad decisions. These decisions hurt others; and, when we realize the pain we caused, we feel rotten. We can apologize, and maybe the person will forgive us. However, many times, trust is also lost.
What do we do with our own sense of guilt and shame?
Shame is what we do to ourselves and blame is what we do to others. When we are in the middle of the shame game, it is hard for us to get ourselves out of the loop. Even when someone lets us off the blame train with full forgiveness, we can keep playing the internal shame game. Why? Because we feel we deserve it. We start mounting a case in our heads about why we are so very bad. The recurring loop we play in our heads says, “You are what you do, what you did was wicked, you must be a horrible person.” Numerous people use this thinking to justify more unhealthy or hurtful actions, which causes people to keep blaming, and the internal shame continues.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

MediaKit_BookCover_7 Days With You by Hugo Driscoll

I hadn’t been anywhere, but my mind had been everywhere. That’s how I felt that summer. Or more precisely, that’s how Sophia had made me feel by the time summer neared its conclusion. The months of July and August had followed identical patterns to June in that we rarely spent a day apart. We rode with Violet across the Suffolk countryside, sometimes for miles on end, often stopping by at local pubs. Then it would be Saturday. That was the best day of all for there was no work on Sunday, which meant dancing with Tom and Jessica until our bodies could no longer stand. We drank, we laughed, and most nights after, we made love as we tip-toed up the stairs of my father’s house. I was obsessed with everything about her. Yes, Sophia Hillingdon, the girl I’d known for barely a few months was the girl I now wanted to spend the rest of my life with. And though we often drove each other crazy, we soon laughed and made up as if nothing happened. It often puzzled me as to why Sophia found our fights so amusing seconds after we were hot from the exertion of spouting obscenities at each other. Red-faced, she’d often say, “You drive me mad Sean. But, you know something? That’s just how I like it.”

“Why?” I’d ask.

“Us,” she would say. “I love how angry you make me because…. Well, I’m obsessed with you… even our arguments sound oddly beautiful.”

The Wellness Sense; Om Swami Author

The Wellness Sense

by Om Swami

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Health & Fitness
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Why do certain foods harm some people and help others?

Why do the results of a weight loss programme vary from individual to individual?

And why do some people fall sick more often than others?

The science of Ayurveda holds answers to these questions and many more. Its scriptures took a holistic approach to health by combining our lifestyle with our natural tendencies (which vary from one person to another).

This groundbreaking new work from Om Swami combines the yogic view of food as sattvic, rajasic and tamasic with the Ayurvedic perspective, and further relates it to the modern view of food as acidic and alkaline. This is also the first time Ayurvedic prakriti (vata, pitta and kapha) has been discussed in the context of yogic prakriti (sattvic, rajasic and tamasic) in a truly cohesive fashion.

The Wellness Sense is a simple, step-by-step handbook on how to take better care of yourself. Accessibly written, deeply researched and distilled from Om Swami’s own livid experience, The Wellness Sense puts your health and happiness in your hands.

Excerpt:

There are various ways to test pH levels but to tell you the truth that is an obsession in my view. Simply just eat a balanced diet. The definition of balance is that eighty percent of your diet should consist of alkaline foods and twenty percent with acidic. In the ideal world, one hundred percent of your diet should be alkaline because your body is already producing enough acids. For most people, however, it is not possible to go on a completely alkaline diet for a variety of reasons. So, go for the eighty-twenty rule in that case, that is, eighty percent alkaline and twenty percent acidic foods.

By following the dietary principles, your chances of remaining healthy grow exponentially. Is it possible to completely avoid the disease in our body, though? Or, more importantly, what actually causes disease? If I eat the proper foods according to my constitution, if I maintain an alkaline diet, does it guarantee I’ll remain free of diseases? The answer is No. There’s more to diseases than the food we intake. There’s no doubt that your chances of falling sick are almost negligible if you use the eating-sense, yet, there’s still a chance. And for that, we must have a holistic understanding of what causes diseases beyond food and how to avoid them. When I say, I’m sick, who is actually sick in me?

Excerpt:

“It’s never too late in life to have a genuine adventure.”

Lu thought of the quote from an author whose book about pirates she’d devoured. When had she experienced a genuine adventure? When had she just thrown caution to the wind and let go?

She felt like all she did was dig into the past and discover other people’s adventures. But what she did mattered, she reminded herself. Uncovering the past and telling its stories was important for future generations. What she left behind as director of the Historical Society—the artifacts, the books, letters, diaries, and photographs—they lived on. They were her progeny.

Maybe it wasn’t the same as having a family and raising children to unleash on the world, but it had to be enough.

With a sigh, she hesitated in front of the antique hall tree that sat inside a small foyer just off the main entrance. She stared at her weary face in the mirror and attempted a smile.

Her chin-length bob looked disheveled. Her eyes were puffy and underscored by melted mascara. Her lipstick hadn’t lasted through her third martini, much less one passionate kiss.

She had turned into a lightweight in her middle age, she decided. She used to be able to handle her liquor without having to be put to bed like a child. Try as she might, she could hardly remember a thing from the night before beyond sitting at the bar and flirting with her newfound beau. It was a very good thing that he had been such a gentleman, or she could have ended up in dire straits.

“You’re not very adept at playing the party girl,” she told herself and winced.

She was already dreading having to entertain the volunteers who would show up at the Historical Society later that morning. Perhaps she’d stay in bed and put a Do Not Disturb sign on the locked front door. Still, she had her doubts that they’d go away. Most of the townsfolk she dealt with were hardly the mousy live-and-let-live types. They were kind, yes, but bossy and prone to interfering in everyone else’s business.
