Excerpt:

Alexander opened his eyes very wide. “Me? Me? I did that? You weren’t even there. Do you want to know what you can do with me?” He leered. “Tell me some more stories about sex-mad queens and priestesses. They sound quite entertaining, but wait until we’re alone. I don’t want to miss a word you say.”

I narrowed my eyes. “If I find out that that you…”

“If I what?” he asked cheerfully.

I didn’t answer. I was looking over his shoulder at a figure in the distance. He must have seen the look on my face because he whirled around. For a moment he didn’t move. Then he dug his heels into Bucephalus’s sides, and, with a wild whoop, galloped madly down the dusty road leaving me staring after him with a bemused expression.

Chiron wriggled on my back and started to whine. I  dropped my reins and unhooked the backpack, pulling him around to my chest. Holding the baby on front of me, I said to him, “There goes my husband, rushing to greet his best friend whom he hasn’t seen in over three months – his best friend who just happens to be your daddy.”

I spoke in English. I didn’t think anyone else would quite understand the complexities of the situation, which I’d already edited for Chiron’s ears. The soldiers around me thought I said blessings. Chiron waved and gurgled happily at my breast. All he was interested in was milk. I could never understand why Chiron seemed to be the only human being who didn’t mind Alexander’s singing. It made most babies turn purple and scream. At first I was worried that he was deaf, but then I realized Chiron was just a little oddball. He would probably turn into one of those weird kids who love broccoli and algebra.

The sun shined, the flags flapped merrily, the soldiers sang, and the Indus River, huge, brown, and deceptively sluggish, flowed like caramel by our sides.

We were in India!

Excerpt:

 Dan gripped the rails of his chair with both hands, holding himself upright by what little strength remained in his body. The cold touch of the steel tubing seemed to give him energy and he looked up at Baraz.

“What is it you need?” he asked, weakly. The stones permitted this question, perhaps because it was a benefit to Dan’s master. “I can find anything here faster than any visitor. You need me alert and conscious. To get what you need.” Each phrase was a strain to speak, without direction from Baraz.

“We have found what we need, cripple,” Baraz answered. “By now, Thook has discovered the way into the place where they grow the gems we seek.” He stood, pointing to the computer as if the gems were there for display. “That place grows gemstones, an amazing skill I must learn for myself. Two stones of the proper design, placed together inside a spell Thook will prepare, will open a doorway from my world to thine. The light of the sun will rip through the veil and provide the path for my queen to come back to her power.”

“You want laser crystals,” Dan exclaimed, the logo now making sense to him. He had seen it before, in an ad in the employment section of the local paper. SolarTech grew laser crystals for industrial use and they were looking for good employees to work in the labs and clean rooms of their facility. “This has got to be the strangest quest I ever heard of,” he mumbled. “You look like a reject from a sword and sorcery movie. Playing with laser crystals, no less.”

“Enough,” Baraz shouted. “Thy place is to obey, nothing more.” He stepped forward and pointed the ax at Dan. “I could dispense with thee now, but that would require another tool in thy place. But soon, fool, thou wilt be as worthless as thou appear. Then I will deal with thy insolence.”

Dan snapped. Baraz was within arm’s reach. Uncaring of the pain caused by the stones on his wrists and forehead, Dan gripped the shaft of the ax. More due to Baraz’s surprise than any martial skill, Dan jerked the ax free, spun it in his hands and swung at Baraz’s stomach. The blade sheared through the tunic, grating on the mail beneath. Dan spun the shaft in his hands, tangling the tunic around the ax-heads and pulled, dragging Baraz to him.

Interview with the Author:

  1. How long have you been writing?

All my life, pretty much.  My first published work was in 1969 while I was in High School.  I’ve been professional since 1991.

2. How long have you been a published author?

My first book was published in 1999. My first short story was published in 1991.

3. What titles do you have available?

My new release is Magic Forgotten, available on Amazon.  I also have a YA fantasy series available on Amazon which includes: There Are Giants In This Valley, Giants Want The Lost River and Giants Want Ragnarok.

4. What made you choose the subject of this book?

I’ve been reading Celtic stories for decades and one day someone asked: Where did the elves go when they left England?  I gave it some thought and the result was Magic Forgotten.

5. Do you have any new titles coming soon?

Magic Forgotten is the first in a series, to be followed by Magic Forbidden and Magic Inquiring.

6. What is your favourite genre and why?

That’s a tough call between Science Fiction or Fantasy.  I like both equally and even more when they cross over. After all: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. (Arthur C Clarke)

7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process?

Getting to the ending and solving the problems in a way nobody else has done it before.  Then I know I did my job properly.

8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why?

Raymond Feist.  He and I have some of the same ideas about elves.

9. Where can readers find you on the web?

On Amazon at my author page. At my website: www.Jackhillman.com. On Facebook at www.facebook.com/JackHillman

Author bio:

Laura Hysell is an author of dark urban fantasy and paranormal romance, with heavy doses of sarcastic humor throughout. She lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest of Oregon, less than two hours from beach, mountain, desert, or city. It has been said that the key to her heart is coffee, but she’s also easily won over by chocolate, books, or a good beer. Luckily, Oregon is filled with all these things, so she’s not moving any time soon. When she’s not reading or writing (a rarity in itself), she is frequently at the beach, camping at a lake, or otherwise enjoying the great outdoors.

Book Title: Claimed by Moonlight

Paranormal romance or sci fi romance: Paranormal Romance

Short (1-2 sentence) teaser/about your book: A string of missing persons has citizens looking over their shoulders and locking their doors at night. But the next victim has already been chosen.

 Blurb:

Kyrie has made a living as a counselor, using her wits and years of schooling to read people. Waking up alone in the woods, with no recollection of how she got there or where her clothes are, throws the good doctor for a loop. She’s not about to let a little memory issue get in the way of her escape, despite the strange circumstances.

Jared has been working on a string of missing persons cases, trying to find the source of the disappearances. What he finds is pale skin, fiery hair, and a woman who makes his heart race.

The stories are true. The legends are real. Creatures of myth prowl the night. Prey becomes predator under the full moon’s light.

Independent Authors (https://indieauthorsblog.wordpress.com/) interview  featuring Laura Hysell, author of Claimed by Moonlight in Other Worlds boxed set

  1. How long have you been writing? I’ve been writing since I was about 9 or 10. I fell in love with reading and writing at a very young age, but around 5th grade I developed a passion for writing.
  2. How long have you been a published author? I published by first book in 2015.
  3. What titles do you have available? I have three books currently available in the Isabella Howerton series: Bloody Beginnings, Bloody Consequences, and Bloody Defiance. Other Worlds, which contains my novella Claimed by Moonlight, will release on Oct. 17.
  4. What made you choose the subject of this book? I had a lot of my readers asking for more about one favorite character, Jared. Since he is one of my favorite characters too, I was more than happy to give him a story.
  5. Do you have any new titles coming soon? My fourth and final book in the Isabella Howerton series, Bloody Endings, will be out in 2018.
  6. What is your favourite genre and why? I read and write a lot of urban fantasy and paranormal fantasy. As a kid, I started with traditional high fantasy- lots of dragons, magic, and swords. As I got older, I started branching out and reading a little of everything. I love the urban/paranormal feel because it can be incorporated into the “real” world, with a magical element. It’s a fun escape from reality.
  7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process? I love finally starting on a new story and getting those ideas that have been bouncing around in my head finally down on paper. I love every moment spent writing, but finally getting the story out is the best feeling.
  8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why? Wow, that’s a tough one. There are many authors I’d love to work with, but I think I’d pick Karen Marie Moning. Her Fever series was dark and exciting, and I’d love to work with someone who can weave such a tale. Her stories may seem dark, but they ultimately are about happy endings, even if it isn’t fairytale style happily ever after.
  9. Where can readers find you on the web? – www.laurahysell.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/laurahysellauthor and Twitter at www.twitter.com/laurahysell

Her next book, Claimed by Moonlight, is part of the Other Worlds Collection, a special $0.99 boxed set bundle of 20 PNR and SFR novels for a limited time. Preorder now! www.OtherWorldsCollection.com.

EXCERPT:

“Put me down! Let go of me.”

He did as I bid, and I stumbled to the ground. “Get away from me, demon!”

“What?”

My ankle throbbed, but I stood and ran away from him anyway, limping the entire way. I had heard the stories, like everyone else. They’d been all over the news for the past three years. The fairytales had been all true. After the first strange news reports, I had scoffed like most people. Then the attacks had come. Men and women had been drained of blood and left for dead. The dead had risen from their graves. Soon, the mainstream media had picked up the story and pandemonium had ensued. Eventually, though, things calmed down to an extent. The federal government had initiated their Paranormal Task Force to deal with the problem, and local police had been trained. The government even hired their own set of paranormal beings to be part of the task force. That choice had not been met without a great deal of anxiety and anger.

The man stalking slowly after me was most definitely one of these strange, supernatural beings. I just had no idea which one he was. Vampire? Imp? Fairy? Succubus? Demon? Any more, I didn’t know the difference between fairy tale and reality. I limped faster, risking a glance behind me. He continued after me, his muscular body not showing any strain, while every step I took had me panting with exertion. I was dead.

“What do you think you’re doing? You’re going to hurt yourself,” he said.

I limped faster, and ultimately stumbled over a particularly large branch. Jared was immediately there, reaching for me. I stared up at him, but his eyes were back to normal. “What are you?”
He sighed and held his hand out to me. “I’m not going to hurt you. Besides, we’re here.”

“Here?” I asked, looking around.

He pointed past me, then resolutely stood with his hand held out. I debated the wisdom of taking his hand. Wherever we were, I couldn’t see it from my location. But he hadn’t hurt me, yet. I took his hand, and he pulled me to my feet. He didn’t stop there, though, as he hoisted me into his arms. Panic seized me, but I tried my best to stifle it down. The man, if he was truly just a man, carried me a short distance to a small cottage. So, this was his safe place. Safe for who, I wondered?

DEADSPEAK 2

by Ruth Bainbridge

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Mystery/thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

 DEADSPEAK2. The chilling new entry in the Deadspeak Mystery Series

Things look different when you’re dead.

It’s Halloween and a group of teens throw a party at Harbinger Falls’ most celebrated haunted estate. It’s all fun and games until a session with a Ouija board guides the partygoers to the body of a young girl hidden in the attic.

Detective Kimberly Trent is assigned the case and quickly discovers that all is not as it seems. First, there’s the connection between the death and a string of petnappings terrorizing the neighborhood. Then there’s the suicide note that only leaves more questions than answers. A visit from Kimberly’s ghostly friend Griff Lindon sheds an unwelcome light. It seems she’s had a run in with the newly deceased who tells her she’s been murdered.

This is the second in The Deadspeak Mysteries. The entries are meant to be read in sequential order and do not standalone. In each book, you’ll find a new murder for Kimberly Trent to solve. You’ll also find the continuing search for who murdered Kim’s sister Elizabeth. Each book will take you closer and closer to finding out the identity of The Hex Killer, the serial killer who ended Elizabeth’s short life. It will also bring you to the heart of the evil that’s come back to life to wreak revenge.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BookCover_DeadSpeak2
Excerpt:
 “This reminds me of when I was in summer camp and stayed up all night trying to contact the dead,” Julie Welch commented.
Mia or no Mia, the time had arrived and the Ouija board was placed in the center of one of the folding tables.
“You did that, Mrs. Welch?” Angie asked.
“Of course,” Julie confessed with a giggle. “I lived for those summers, and the camp counselors had no idea what we were up to. They only wondered why we were all so tired in the mornings.”
The atmosphere of the Halloween Party had changed. Ever since the announcement, things went from Party Central, to an eerie, expectant quiet. The music was turned off and the food lined up on the rented tables was bereft of pawing hands.
The six rested their fingers lightly on the planchette. “Remember: no cheating! Understood?” Mrs. Welch warned.
The participants nodded in agreement as the woman with the highlighted blonde hair inhaled deeply.
“Hello? Is there anyone with us?” Julie asked, starting off the questioning.
A soft scrape… and … movement! Infinitesimal at first, the planchette picked up speed.
Yes.
“What the—” Gen started. A loud moan interrupted the moment.
“Yes, I’m here,” a deep voice bellowed.
Fear spread quickly as attendees sprang up from their chairs and readied to run. Another unearthly groan penetrated the air. Angie latched on to Glenn’s hand.
Footsteps.
Someone was climbing the basement stairs.
Born in the idyllic, sleepy town of Ithaca, NY, Ruth Bainbridge has been a lover of mysteries for her entire life.
Ever since a child, she has consumed detective stories at regular intervals, becoming enamored with all the superstars of crime. She loved nothing more than to match wits with the likes of Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Thomas Pitt, Lord Peter Wimsey, Richard Jury, and Edward X Delaney, becoming inspired by their brilliance. Hoping to emulate her writing idol’s achievements in dreaming up such characters, she started composing her own short stories.
However, life interfered with her plans of becoming the next hopeful to try a life of crime—on paper at least. Devoting herself to her marriage and the raising of four children, the empty nest syndrome gave her the impetus to return to her first love—murder.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

perf5.000x8.000.indd

Excerpt:

“What’s your deal? Are you always this rude, or is it just with me?” Alyssa addressed Brandt’s muscular back. Tried not to notice how hot he looked in his dark jeans.

He placed the beer on the counter and slowly pivoted to face her. Thunderclouds darkened his expression, his eyes a stormy midnight blue. “What are you trying to prove?” His voice was controlled.

She pasted a smile on her face, digging her nails into her palms to avoid the giggle bubbling up. Her plan was working. He was jealous of Steve. Although she was baiting the angry bear, she couldn’t stop herself. He deserved it after the way he’d acted. The pompous ass.

“Prove? Nothing. We had a fling. It’s over. Time to move on, right?” She swallowed the spear of pain down, struggled to keep her tone light. Cool.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interview with the Author:
  1. How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since elementary school. I wrote my first story, The Cruel Swan, when I was seven.
2. How long have you been a published author?
I published my first non-fiction magazine article in 1997 and wrote several articles in the health and wellness sector. In 2014, I published a memoir called Come Ride with Me Along the Big C detailing how yoga and meditation helped me cope with breast cancer. The Wild Rose Press published my first novel, Second Chance in Laguna, on March 31, 2017. The second book in the Finding Forever In Laguna series, At Last in Laguna, launches October 18, 2017.
3. What titles do you have available?
Second Chance in Laguna
At Last in Laguna releases October 18, 2017
Sunset in Laguna releases Spring 2018.
4. What made you choose the subject of this book?
I’m intrigued by people who appear to have perfect lives on the surface, but actually bear deep scars and wounds. Alyssa and her brother’s best friend Brandt both share this trait and their love story requires each to face and heal their inner demons.
  1. Do you have any new titles coming soon?
At Last in Laguna releases October 18, 2017
Sunset in Laguna releases Spring 2018.
6. What is your favourite genre and why?
Romance and historical fiction. Romance is the genre of hope—where you’re reminded that light exists and love can win, despite it all. I love history and enjoy books where the history is woven skillfully into the story. Add in some romance and I’m in.
7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process?
When I’m writing the story and the characters begin to speak to me. I often have something planned for the story and then the characters lead me in another direction altogether. At that point, I’m truly immersed in the flow of the process.
8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why?
I’d love to co-author a book with one of my favorite author’s, Nora Roberts, because she’s brilliant and I could learn so much from her talent and dedication.
Thanks so much for being my guest.
Of The Divine
by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   FICTION/Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
 Henna is one of the most powerful sorcerers in the Order of Napthol, and her runes ’s runes tell her that the future of Kavet is balanced on the edge of the knife. The treaties between Kavet and the dragon-like race known as the Osei have become intolerable. The time has come for the royal house to magically challenge Osei dominion. Prince Verte, Henna’ lover, is to serve as the nexus for the powerful but dangerous spell, with Naples–an untested young sorcerer from the Order of Napthol–a volatile but critical support to its creation.
Amid these plans, Dahlia Indathrone’s arrival in the city shouldn’t matter. She has no magic and no royal lineage, and yet, Henna immediately knows Dahlia is important. She just can’t see why.
As their lives intertwine, the four will learn that they are pawns in a larger game, one played by the forces of the Abyss and of the Numen—the infernal and the divine.
A game no mortal can ever hope to win.
Excerpt:
“You cannot live your life as a slave to those who have gone before,” Verte replied. “You need to let the living and dead alike move on.”
Wenge glared up at him. Verte paused, keeping his stance and expression neutral as he raised magical shields against a possible attack.
“You don’t know where the dead go,” Wenge accused. “We talk of the realms beyond, of the Abyss and the Numen, but no one really knows for sure what happens once our shades pass out of the mortal realm. What if we just go screaming into the void? What if—”
Verte took the man’s frail, trembling hand in his own. He wished he could use his magic to urge him to keep moving, but Wenge’s decision whether to demand a trial or to take the brand willingly needed to be made without magical coercion.
“Even the royal house, with all our strength and training and resources, does not practice death sorcery. Maleficence or not,” Verte said, hoping the words would pierce the man’s sudden anxiety, “if you continue to let your power use you this way, it will kill you before the year is out. Of that I am certain.”
Wenge’s body sagged. He waved a hand next to his face as if to chase away a buzzing fly—or in this case, a whispering spirit. He flinched at whatever the ghost said, then muttered, “I do not know what to be without it.”
A Shot At Love
by Peggy Jaeger
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Nothing’s impossible when love is on the menu. In Peggy Jaeger’s luscious series, the only thing more tempting than a delicious meal is a truly delectable romance . . .
Look for exclusive recipes in each book!
Photographer Gemma Laine is looking for arresting faces on the streets of Manhattan when her camera captures something shocking—a triple murder. In that moment, she becomes a target for the mob—and a top priority for a very determined, breathtakingly handsome, FBI special agent. With deadlines to meet and photo shoots on her calendar, Gemma chafes at the idea of protection, but every moment she spends under his watchful eye is a temptation to lose herself in his muscular arms . . .
With two of his men and one crucial witness dead, Special Agent Kyros Pappandreos can’t afford to be distracted. But Gemma is dazzling—and her connection to Kandy Laine’s high-profile cooking empire makes her an especially easy mark for some very bad people. Keeping her safe is much more pleasure than business, but as the heat between them starts to sizzle, Ky is set to investigate whether they have a shot at love . . .
Excerpt Three:
“How many do I have to hit for you to be satisfied?”
Ky looked over to where she stood to the side of the garage, the Glock in her hand, its barrel aimed at the ground. He’d watched her load the clip, then weigh and balance the gun in her hand like she did it every day of her life.
“All of them. You might never get a second chance if a first bullet misses an attacker, so yes. All of them.”
She moved to the line in the grass he’d drawn for her to shoot from, mumbling something he couldn’t hear, but guessing it wasn’t something complementary.
“Ready?” he asked.
“Yup. Any particular order you want me to hit them in?”
He had to bite back the grin threatening to fly free at her snooty, disgruntled tone.
“Your call.”
Gemma nodded and took a stance. She flexed her shoulders and neck, the motion so subtly erotic, it made his pulse quicken, and she shifted her weight. From his viewing position behind her, he appreciated just how tall and lean she was. Narrow shoulders were relaxed and tapered down into a waist no bigger than a hand span. How many times in the past few days had he thought what it would be like to slip his own hands around that tiny area and pull her in close? Too many for prudence, that was for sure.
The first bottle, the one he’d put the farthest from them, shattered into a thousand fragments. Before he could take a full breath, she’d hit the next two.
The final three closer ones she dispatched with equal ease.
When she turned to him and asked, “Satisfied?” in a tone filled with condescension, Ky had to physically restrain himself from running to her, lifting her up in his arms, and kissing the gorgeous smirk off her mouth.
Because he’d discovered how much he liked sparring with her—go figure that out—he pursed his lips and nodded. “Not bad.”
Interview with the Author:
  1. How long have you been writing? In all honesty, I’ve always been a writer. I was given a lock and key diary when I was about 6. I never wrote anything about myself, my days, my teachers, etc, in it. I thought my life was pretty boring, so I made up stories instead. The stories all centered around an overweight only child whose parents were divorced. Like that old saying write what you know, I was actually writing about myself, just doing so under the guise of a fictional character.
    2. How long have you been a published author?  I had my first romance novel SKATER’S WALTZ published in 2015, but I first found publication in college when I wrote an article for a nursing trade magazine about the life of a nursing student – me! Again, write what you know. After I started working as a nurse I had several more Nursing articles in various nursing magazines purchased and published. When I had my daughter, I started writing for parenting magazines and newspapers and had two children’s books published by an extremely tiny independent press! I had quite a few fictional mysteries published in literature magazines in the early 2000’s, all culminating in my 2015 novel release. And I’ve never looked back. Since March 2015 I’ve had 10 romance books published.
    3. What titles do you have available? From the WILD ROSE PRESS, I have 7. The MacQuire Women series, books 1-5. Skater’s Waltz, There’s No Place like Home, First Impressions, The Voices of Angels, and my august release of Passion’s Palette. Two works about the San Valentino family, 3 Wishes and A Kiss Under The Christmas Lights. The latter book has been up for several awards this year, including a new England People’s choice award.  From Kensington/Lyrical Press, I have 3 books under the WILL COOK FOR LOVE series. Cooking with Kandy (april 2017), A Shot at Love (October 2017), and Can’t Stand the heat (April 2018).
    4. What made you choose the subject of this book? A SHOT AT LOVE, book 2 in The Will Cook For love Series, is Laine sister Gemma’s story. I loved writing her as a foil to her sister Kandy in book one and wanted to give her her own HEA. She needed a man who could stand up to her domineering and independent personality, and one who could calm her fears and provide her with emotional stability. It was so much fun inventing Ky Pappandreos for her. The fact that he’s the FBI agent who needs to protect her when she witnesses a mob killing, made writing their scenes all the more fun.
    5. Do you have any new titles coming soon? CAN’T STAND THE HEAT, book 3, releases on April 3, 2018 and this is cousin Stacy’s story.  Here’s the blurb for it:
In Peggy Jaeger’s delectable series, delicious food is just an appetizer for life’s main course: the kind of love that feeds your soul.
 With three successful TV series under her belt, including her cousin Kandy’s, executive producer Stacy Peters is ready to helm her own show. But to make that happen, she has to do her network boss one favor first—spend two months on a ranch in Montana wrangling the notoriously difficult director of Beef Battles. Apparently, he eats producers for breakfast. Yet all Stacy can think when she meets the lean, rugged man is how hungry he makes her . . .
Dominic Stamp—Nikko to his very few friends—has had enough interference from TV newbies. And when Stacy climbs out of the car in Montana, he’s not convinced she’s even old enough to drive, much less produce his show. But he can’t deny that the long-legged blonde with the stubborn will and the dazzling smile whets his appetite. And as Stacy proves her talent with the crew and the budget alike, Nikko vows to prove to her that love is on the menu for both of them . . .
6. What is your favorite genre and why? I don’t even know if this is a real sub-genre of romance, but I love love love to read small town contemporary comedic romances. Small towns are near and dear to my heart since I live in one. The contemporary genre is familiar to me in so many ways that I tend to read it the most of all the sub-genres I read. And a story that makes me laugh on one page then cry on the other is a story I will read again and again and tell other people about!
7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process? This is going to sound corny, but to me the best and most exciting part of what I do showing people ( through my books) that everyone deserves, and can have, a happily ever after in their own lives. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how much trauma and drama you’ve been through in your life, how you think you’ll always be alone. Everyone. EVERYONE deserves their own happy ending.
8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why? I don’t even have to think about this one. Nora Roberts/JD Robb, hands down. I would love to be able to see first hand how she weaves her plots and characters into the wonderful stories she tells. To sit at her knee ( or desk!) and just inhale those 30+ years of writing wisdom while providing some of my own inspiration is a bucket list item, for sure.
Thanks so much for hosting me today! This interview was fun and I loved the questions.
