Photographer Gemma Laine is looking for arresting faces on the streets of Manhattan when her camera captures something shocking—a triple murder. In that moment, she becomes a target for the mob—and a top priority for a very determined, breathtakingly handsome, FBI special agent. With deadlines to meet and photo shoots on her calendar, Gemma chafes at the idea of protection, but every moment she spends under his watchful eye is a temptation to lose herself in his muscular arms . . .

With two of his men and one crucial witness dead, Special Agent Kyros Pappandreos can’t afford to be distracted. But Gemma is dazzling—and her connection to Kandy Laine’s high-profile cooking empire makes her an especially easy mark for some very bad people. Keeping her safe is much more pleasure than business, but as the heat between them starts to sizzle, Ky is set to investigate whether they have a shot at love . . .

Excerpt Three:

“How many do I have to hit for you to be satisfied?”

Ky looked over to where she stood to the side of the garage, the Glock in her hand, its barrel aimed at the ground. He’d watched her load the clip, then weigh and balance the gun in her hand like she did it every day of her life.

“All of them. You might never get a second chance if a first bullet misses an attacker, so yes. All of them.”

She moved to the line in the grass he’d drawn for her to shoot from, mumbling something he couldn’t hear, but guessing it wasn’t something complementary.

“Ready?” he asked.

“Yup. Any particular order you want me to hit them in?”

He had to bite back the grin threatening to fly free at her snooty, disgruntled tone.

“Your call.”

Gemma nodded and took a stance. She flexed her shoulders and neck, the motion so subtly erotic, it made his pulse quicken, and she shifted her weight. From his viewing position behind her, he appreciated just how tall and lean she was. Narrow shoulders were relaxed and tapered down into a waist no bigger than a hand span. How many times in the past few days had he thought what it would be like to slip his own hands around that tiny area and pull her in close? Too many for prudence, that was for sure.

The first bottle, the one he’d put the farthest from them, shattered into a thousand fragments. Before he could take a full breath, she’d hit the next two.

The final three closer ones she dispatched with equal ease.

When she turned to him and asked, “Satisfied?” in a tone filled with condescension, Ky had to physically restrain himself from running to her, lifting her up in his arms, and kissing the gorgeous smirk off her mouth.

Because he’d discovered how much he liked sparring with her—go figure that out—he pursed his lips and nodded. “Not bad.”

Interview with the Author:

  1. How long have you been writing? In all honesty, I’ve always been a writer. I was given a lock and key diary when I was about 6. I never wrote anything about myself, my days, my teachers, etc, in it. I thought my life was pretty boring, so I made up stories instead. The stories all centered around an overweight only child whose parents were divorced. Like that old saying write what you know, I was actually writing about myself, just doing so under the guise of a fictional character.

    2. How long have you been a published author?  I had my first romance novel SKATER’S WALTZ published in 2015, but I first found publication in college when I wrote an article for a nursing trade magazine about the life of a nursing student – me! Again, write what you know. After I started working as a nurse I had several more Nursing articles in various nursing magazines purchased and published. When I had my daughter, I started writing for parenting magazines and newspapers and had two children’s books published by an extremely tiny independent press! I had quite a few fictional mysteries published in literature magazines in the early 2000’s, all culminating in my 2015 novel release. And I’ve never looked back. Since March 2015 I’ve had 10 romance books published.

    3. What titles do you have available? From the WILD ROSE PRESS, I have 7. The MacQuire Women series, books 1-5. Skater’s Waltz, There’s No Place like Home, First Impressions, The Voices of Angels, and my august release of Passion’s Palette. Two works about the San Valentino family, 3 Wishes and A Kiss Under The Christmas Lights. The latter book has been up for several awards this year, including a new England People’s choice award.  From Kensington/Lyrical Press, I have 3 books under the WILL COOK FOR LOVE series. Cooking with Kandy (april 2017), A Shot at Love (October 2017), and Can’t Stand the heat (April 2018).

    4. What made you choose the subject of this book? A SHOT AT LOVE, book 2 in The Will Cook For love Series, is Laine sister Gemma’s story. I loved writing her as a foil to her sister Kandy in book one and wanted to give her her own HEA. She needed a man who could stand up to her domineering and independent personality, and one who could calm her fears and provide her with emotional stability. It was so much fun inventing Ky Pappandreos for her. The fact that he’s the FBI agent who needs to protect her when she witnesses a mob killing, made writing their scenes all the more fun.

    5. Do you have any new titles coming soon? CAN’T STAND THE HEAT, book 3, releases on April 3, 2018 and this is cousin Stacy’s story.  Here’s the blurb for it:

In Peggy Jaeger’s delectable series, delicious food is just an appetizer for life’s main course: the kind of love that feeds your soul.

With three successful TV series under her belt, including her cousin Kandy’s, executive producer Stacy Peters is ready to helm her own show. But to make that happen, she has to do her network boss one favor first—spend two months on a ranch in Montana wrangling the notoriously difficult director of Beef Battles. Apparently, he eats producers for breakfast. Yet all Stacy can think when she meets the lean, rugged man is how hungry he makes her . . .

Dominic Stamp—Nikko to his very few friends—has had enough interference from TV newbies. And when Stacy climbs out of the car in Montana, he’s not convinced she’s even old enough to drive, much less produce his show. But he can’t deny that the long-legged blonde with the stubborn will and the dazzling smile whets his appetite. And as Stacy proves her talent with the crew and the budget alike, Nikko vows to prove to her that love is on the menu for both of them . . .

6. What is your favorite genre and why? I don’t even know if this is a real sub-genre of romance, but I love love love to read small town contemporary comedic romances. Small towns are near and dear to my heart since I live in one. The contemporary genre is familiar to me in so many ways that I tend to read it the most of all the sub-genres I read. And a story that makes me laugh on one page then cry on the other is a story I will read again and again and tell other people about!

7. What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process? This is going to sound corny, but to me the best and most exciting part of what I do showing people ( through my books) that everyone deserves, and can have, a happily ever after in their own lives. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how much trauma and drama you’ve been through in your life, how you think you’ll always be alone. Everyone. EVERYONE deserves their own happy ending.

8. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why? I don’t even have to think about this one. Nora Roberts/JD Robb, hands down. I would love to be able to see first hand how she weaves her plots and characters into the wonderful stories she tells. To sit at her knee ( or desk!) and just inhale those 30+ years of writing wisdom while providing some of my own inspiration is a bucket list item, for sure.

Thanks so much for hosting me today! This interview was fun and I loved the questions.
