No one has more fun than Jett Matthews, and he intends to keep it that way, but he has to convince the girl of his dreams, Devin King, that Jett’s brand of fun means forever.

My plan for this upcoming takedown was to wait in the dark until I saw her stumble into the building. And then, I’d follow her stealthily into the classroom. Stalking probably wasn’t the number one way to get a girl, but it was all I had at the moment. I didn’t know her name, which was my bad, so I couldn’t look her up on social media. And I hadn’t seen her around campus that morning, so I hadn’t been able to accidentally “bump” into her.

Thus, the shadows.

I chuckled quietly when I saw her enter the building, instantly dropping her cell phone on the hard laminate flooring. This chick. I shook my head and left my hiding place, falling in step behind her and trailing her into the classroom. Then down the steps and across five people to sit smack-dab in the middle of the row. I had to make people move down so I could get a seat right next to her. And through it all, she never turned and noticed that I was behind her. Not once did she glance over her shoulder. She was completely unaware of her surroundings.

I pulled out my tablet and then watched as she once again set up her desk with more supplies than she’d need for the whole semester. I waited patiently, hiding my smirk behind my hand while she fumbled a pen and sent it sailing two levels down.

“Hi.” I spoke close to her ear, but not so close that it would be considered “rude.”

She jerked away from my lips in surprise and turned to glare at me. “What are you doing here?” I found that I enjoyed the flare of irritation in her eyes as much as I’d enjoyed the blush on her neck the first class we’d shared.

I raised an eyebrow, pointing to my tablet. “I’m in this class.”

Her eyes narrowed even further, and her lips made that straight line for a moment. “Yeah, but why are you here, next to me?”

Tate and Clay’s newest case has all the earmarks of typical investigative work: lies, deception, collusion, and a dead body – except the body was found in Fetish Alley, and nothing that happens there is typical.

Tate sat beneath the covers, his iPad propped up against raised knees as he scrolled down the screen. His brow furrowed as Clay climbed in next to him. “Look at this. Rick’s sent me the police report from Dixon’s case. No one could find them earlier in the station. He made a stink about it and hey, presto. Now we have it.”

Clay picked up his reading glasses from the bedside table, unfolded them, and perched them on his nose. “What am I looking at?” he enquired, peering over at the tablet.

Tate’s finger moved across the screen as he pointed out areas of interest. “The man who alerted the cops didn’t find the body himself. He saw a severed hand, and what appeared to be a costume, then called the cops.”

Clay blinked. “But Dixon wasn’t missing any hands.”

Tate nodded. “I know. Turns out it was a prop, something used in a previous production of who knows what. The place was full of old stage stuff.” He ran his finger across another area of the report. “The cops checked it out, just in case, and they were the ones who discovered the real live body.” He sniggered. “Well, not live, but you know what I mean.”

Clay did. His partner’s dark and often twisted sense of humour was entertaining even if sometimes it bordered on being downright scary.

Tate frowned. “They found Dixon in the basement, still dressed in his fox costume. He must have had his suit on underneath, because, look here.” Tate pointed to what looked like an amateur mobile phone shot. “There’s a cufflink right there.”

Clay leaned in and sure enough, there was a gold cufflink in the shape of a fox in the right shirt cuff. “Hmm,” he mused. “The report says he’d collapsed there on the spot. Then the doctor on scene confirmed it looked like a heart attack and that was it. No bloody post-mortem or anything.” He rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “He must have been boiling in his suit and the costume. I suppose it was a cold night, and it was raining, so that might explain it. I’d be interested as to why no one saw a man dressed as a fox walking down to the theatre. I mean it’s not that far from the club, but the area is populated.”

Tate nodded. “I wondered about the lack of witnesses too. Someone should have seen something. And how could the cops not find the death suspicious, even a little, when the man was wearing a fox costume over his suit?”

Even the Worthington least likely to wed may find her perfect match

. . .

Marriage has worked out quite nicely for her older sisters, yet Lady Augusta Vivers is certain it would end her studies in languages and geography, and stop her from travelling. But when her mother thwarts her plan to attend the only university in Europe that accepts women—in Italy—she is forced to agree to one London Season. Spending her time at parties proves an empty diversion—until she encounters the well-traveled Lord Phineas Carter-Wood. Still, Europe awaits . . .

Phineas has studied architecture all over the world, yet Augusta is his most intriguing discovery yet. How can he resist a woman who loves maps and far-off lands? But her longing for all things foreign hinders any hope of courtship. When he learns her cousins have offered a trip to Europe, he secretly arranges to join their party. For he is determined to show Augusta that a real union is a thrilling adventure of its own. And when their journey is beset by dangerous obstacles, he gets far more opportunity than he bargained for . . .

Read an Excerpt

“Italy!” Her brother’s bellow could probably be heard all over the town house and in Berkeley Square. Possibly even farther.

From her position on the sofa, Lady Augusta Vivers stifled a sigh. She refused to allow her posture to sag or disappointment to show on her countenance. She had known her campaign to be allowed to attend university was not going to be easy. Perhaps she should have started her scheme earlier. Or given her brother a hint to temper his shock.

“It is not as if Padua is some unknown place in South America or Africa,” she pointed out calmly.

“Where on earth did you come up with such an . . . idea?” Her mother paled a bit and her faint voice pierced the deadened air.

“I wish to further my studies.” Augusta fought to keep the exasperation from her tone. Why else would she want to go to university? Not only that, but traveling there and living in Italy for a time would allow her to see a little of the world she had been studying. “As educated as Miss Tallerton and Mr. Winters are, they long ago exhausted the limits of what they can teach me. Which is the reason I have been corresponding with professors in Europe and taking lessons from visiting scholars, hoping to learn more. It is no longer enough.” In fact, her thirst for knowledge had grown to the point that she needed to attend university as much as she needed food or air. “Yet it has become clear that the only way I am going to succeed is by studying with experts. For that, I must attend university.”

“But, my dear”—her mother paused for a moment as if to gather her thoughts—“do you not wish to wed?”

Of course she did. Just. Not. Now. “I do not recall anyone asking Charlie if he was forsaking marriage simply because he wished to attend Oxford.” She wished Grace’s brother, properly called the Earl of Stanwood was here. He’d be able to help. Augusta turned her gaze back to Matt. As her guardian and Earl of Worthington, he was the final decision maker. “If I were a boy you would allow me to go.”

About the Author: USA Today bestselling author Ella Quinn’s studies and other jobs have always been on the serious side. Reading historical romances, especially Regencies, were her escape. Eventually her love of historical novels led her to start writing them.

The High Sierras Series Book Blast

ALREADY GONE

A decade after Logan walked out on Maddy, he returns, and emotions long banked surface, then everything becomes complicated and dangerous.

DEADLY PURPOSE

Thrown together, and neither is happy about it, Meg and Declan navigate their unwanted growing attraction as they fight to keep Meg alive.

Read an Excerpt from Already Gone:

She chewed her bottom lip, then gave the knob a slow turn. The door opened silently. Keeping her body outside the door in case she needed to run, she flipped on the light to the kitchen. Sinks and dishwasher against the far wall, racks of baking supplies to her left, the aroma of dark roast told her the coffeemaker was doing its job. Everything looked as it should—except the storeroom door was closed, and the storeroom door was almost always open.

Call the police—that was the smart thing to do. She should call the police, have them check, make sure no one was lying in wait, ready to attack a lone baker. But she’d feel really stupid if it turned out she’d just had an absentminded moment. It had taken long enough for people to take her seriously, to accept her as a competent businesswoman. Perky, ever cheerful Madison Gallagher, the girl next door, captain of her high school cheer squad. Do-gooder.

Okay, there were way too many hiding places. The idea of searching behind the counters, then the dining room, the bathrooms made her uneasy. She took out her cell and tapped in her password. She’d do the sensible thing and call the police station, have them send out whoever was on duty. They’d do a walkthrough, everything would be fine, and she’d give the officer hot coffee and a muffin for his or her trouble. And hope they didn’t spread the word that she’d freaked over nothing.

Dark spots on the floor snagged her attention. She frowned. Lulu had mopped yesterday, but there were dark spots on the floor. Wet, dark red spots.

A slight sound from behind had her sucking in a breath to scream even as a low, male voice rumbled in her ear, “Madison.”

She didn’t know how her heart could nearly jump out of her chest and keep beating. The shriek in her throat came out as a muffled yelp when a hand covered her mouth from behind. She struggled, jabbing back her elbow and connecting solidly against a hard body.

A pained grunt and the hand over her mouth loosened. “God almighty, blondie.”

“Logan?”

“Yeah.”

He loosened his hold and she turned around, trying to convince herself that her rapid heartbeat came from surprise, not because Logan Ross’s hands sent electricity zinging right through every part of her. Every part. “Why’d you sneak up on me? Are you trying to give me a heart attack? And what are you doing here?”

She stepped back, her gaze running over him. A dark knit cap covered his head, the blue-gray eyes that had once so intrigued her looked exhausted, and his beard was scruffy, and not in a good way. He held what looked like a bundle of rags and a flashlight in one hand.

“I need your help.”

The Amazing, Unfolding World of Machine Civilization Series

The Amazing, Unfolding World of Machine Civilization Series

by Clayton Barnett

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Science Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 NOTE: Echoes of Family Lost and The Fourth Law are only $0.99

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURBS:
A history beginning in our near future, these stories are set in a world where the US dollar has been displaced as the world’s reserve currency, prompting its economic and political collapse, with a few areas able to hold onto civilization.
At the same time, across the Pacific, under a resurgent economy brought about by the implementation of new technology and deregulation, three Japanese companies produce breakthroughs in both artificial intelligence and robotics.  These newly made people exhibit an odd interest in the goings-on of the former United States.
To-date, my chronicling of this interest of theirs has led to stories that populate five novels, which I would like to share with everyone now!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cover_TheFourthLaw

The Fourth Law – In the near future, 23-year-old apprentice nurse Lily Barrett lives in a shattered time.  Following its economic collapse, the US has devolved into a group of a few barely functional smaller states and vast swathes of barbarian badlands.  His sister has been missing for years, and her father, after earning the opprobrium of most of the world for running a state terror organization, presumed dead.

Two things keep her going: her live-in job at a small, Catholic orphanage in the city of Waxahachie, Republic of Texas, and Ai, her odd but dear friend, whom she met online; a young woman who only shows herself to Lily as a rendered CG image.

Troubled by her past, haunted by her name, and facing an uncertain future, Lily seems only a quiet, simple life.  But, that past and her present conspire against her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cover_EchoesOfFamilyLost
Echoes of Family Lost – Alive!  After four years believing her older sister lost and presumed dead in the horrible Breakup of the United States, Lily Barrett gets word from her dear friend, Ai – and Ai’s family of Machine Civilization – that Callie Barrett is very likely alive… but over 900 miles away in Knoxville.
Using the resources of her and Ai’s family, Lily puts together a search party to go find Callie:  old, broken, and burnt Orloff – an expert in surviving in the Badlands, Ai’s little sister, Fausta – her machine mind controlling a Combat Android to protect her friend, all together in a cart pulled by their sturdy pony, Clyde.
It’s almost a thousand miles to go, with something very odd trying to limit their ability to communicate over distance and even to cross bridges.  A chance meeting along the way in Huntsville, former Alabama, wrecks their plans, and puts all of their lives in danger.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cover_cursed hearts

Cursed Hearts – Even with San Diego occupied by the Mexican Army, Katarina Sosabowski pursues her MBA at UCSD, and is happy to welcome and put up her visiting step-cousin from Japan, Christopher Dennou, for a night so he can complete his enrollment the following day.

But a minor earthquake brings a major surprise:  Chris’s younger sister, Maya, murders their mother and escapes Neuroi Institute, the research facility that created them.

While Chris and ‘Cat’ grow closer to one another, Maya inexorably crosses an ocean and half a continent to take back her brother, killing anyone who gets in her way.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cover_Friend and Ally
Friend and Ally – Model 5 is a prototype designed to fit seemlessly into human society.  A meeting in Tokyo derails Nichole’s planned training as she is dispatched to Portland, former Oregon; the last working deep water port on the West Coast of the imploding US.
There, under her cover as a Graduate Engineering Student, she is to do her utmost to nurture the people and politics of the City-State into a Friend and Ally of the Japanese Empire.  But from the first day in her new home, all of Nichole’s plans go awry.
Beset by those who want this small lamp of Western Civilization snuffed out, Nichole must find within herself the courage and ability to protect her new friends, at whatever consequence to herself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cover_Foes and Rivals

Foes and Rivals – After residing nearly a year in Portland, Nichole’s life seems to finally settle down: with her classes, friends, and lover.  But troubling rumors about secret deals between the City’s master and the savage horsemen to the east reach her ears.

With her own skills augmented by her friends and allies, she sets plans into motion she hopes will thwart those in opposition to her dream of a peaceful future.

Once again denied a quiet, normal life, Nichole is faced to make hard, dangerous choices that will jeopardize her, her friends, and the survival of the City itself.

Cursed Hearts:

Izumi blinked his eyes against the small light above him.  Had power been restored already?  He tried to sit up . . . .

And couldn’t.

Not only were his limbs restrained, he could not even move his head to look about.  His eyes now adjusted to the light, he was able to tell he was in the surgery itself.  That’s right, he thought, each unit has a small emergency generator.  He heard movement in the room.

“Hello!  Who’s there?!”

There was no reply, he was about to shout again when Maya came into his field of view.

“Miss Maya!  Thank goodness!  Would you please – ” He broke off sharply as she raised the rotary bone saw in her right hand.  “Miss Maya!  What is the meaning – !”

“You have knowledge that we need.  Now.” He’d just noted the red in her eyes before she pressed the saw against his forehead.  Blood sprayed everywhere, across the room, across her face, as he screamed on and on.

With a heave of breath, he opened his eyes again.  They stung from all the blood in them.  Did he pass out?  What was Maya doin-

She stood over him, his blood running down her face and dripping back onto his.

“M… Maya…” His voice choked with agony.  “…what are… what…?”

“We have already answered that question.” She reached toward him, just above his eyes, into his forebrain.

Guest Post – Topic: Your plans for the future

Had to step back and take a walk to answer this one.  As I have alluded to at other tour stops, I plan to keep telling stories about Machine Civilization for as long as they keep showing them to me.  Which is when I had the idea for this Guest Post.  Rather than tell you about my plans for the future, how about for this ‘Stop, just before the weekend, I show a little of what is coming next!  Due out this summer, please enjoy getting to know Gary and Henge, and their families, in their story, “Worlds Without End.”

Excerpt 1

They walked along t  he beach holding hands as they always did.  It was typically warm:  he’d a plain white tee shirt besides his navy swim trunks and she a translucent white wrap over her school-issue dark blue one-piece.  There were clouds, but, of course, no sun.  Just the brightness.

Nothing ever changes here, he thought, just me.  And rarely, her.

Henge abruptly sat at the crest of the strand.  Her legs stuck out before her and she rocked her bare feet back and forth.

Over the last ten years, Gary reflected, she has changed her appearance very little.  The same purple hair in two twin-tails; her denim overalls atop her white tee shirt – and no shoes – were her typical attire; different now, of course, as they might go swimming in her sea.  She’d gotten a little taller, as he had, keeping her open, friendly adobe-colored eyes over a mouth that never smiled, never frowned.

Gary sat down next to her.  It was warm, so rather than putting his right arm about her, he took her hand.  Their hips and legs touched.  The contact was enough that her True Form, a playful otter, echoed about his subconscious.

“Over so many of your cycles, I am older to say, ‘happy birthday!’”

The corners of his mouth turned up.  For him, quite the display.

“Thank you, wife!”

“Your mother and father say we must not call one another that!” Her voice was soft and even, but he heard the emotion behind it.

“My mother and father say lots.  But as of today,” he leaned to kiss her cheek, “I’m a rebellious teenager!”

There was a flicker of light and the play of static in their palms.

Henge was different.

No more a slightly tom-boyish seeming 12-year old, Gary could not see a straight line on her anywhere.  Her chest was fuller and her hips rounder.  Her light purple hair still had two small twin-tails, but the mass of the rest was six inches or so past her shoulders.  Her schoolgirl one-piece swimsuit now a white bikini.  Modest, but still a bikini.

“Better?” She asked, her voice a tiny fraction lower.

“Very!”

“Good.”

He felt her start to move but he was on his back and she atop him faster than he could see.  Typical:  in their home human and machine reflexes were different.  Her hands were just at the base of his ribs.  Her eyes – that odd blend of tan and red – never left his.

“I have a present for you, Intended.”

“Nothing, I hope, that will anger my parents?” They had been totally honest with one another since they met.

“No.”

She let her hands slide off him into the white sand as she lowered herself.  Their lips touched.  She shifted slightly.  They touched again.

Henge sat back up.  Her left hand returned to just below his chest.  The index finger of her right traced along her lips.  Still looking at him.

“I… liked that…” Her voice trailed off.

“…husband…”

Did he really hear that whisper?  Or, was it just the surf?

Henge stood, holding her hand out.  Gary let her pull him up.  Oh!

They were now the same height.

She pointed back to where they’d come from.

“Let’s talk a little and pray together before you go to your home.”

“Yes.”

Vampire. Witch. Hero. Monster.

Titus Aurelius is all of these things. Ever since he rose from the ashes of ancient Pompeii, this former Roman general has fought for survival.

A few millennia later, bloodseeker Titus isn’t looking for trouble—just a quick meal. But when his path crosses the witch Abigail’s, that plan gets shot to Hades. They find out the Paranormal Investigation Agency (PIA) is plotting something monstrous—something that involves exploding gas mains, lethal bird-shifters, and sadistic vampire minions.

Will they uncover the PIA’s murderous secret before every supernatural in its path is destroyed?

And what is Titus and Abigail’s connection to the mage who, almost twenty years later, is exiled to a paranormal boarding school? Can this mage solve a mystery concerning a stolen potion and ghostly figure before students—including him—wind up dead?

Together for the first time, the Mage Tales Prequels: Books 0-II are action-packed, edge-of-your-seat suspense stories shot through with a megadose of snark. If you love authors like Kevin Hearne, Lev Grossman, and Ilona Andrews, give these a try! This box set contains one novella and two full-length novels:

From Mage Lessons:

It took all I had just to keep the protection spell up. My supply of magic began to run dangerously low.

Miles . . . Pen . . . anyone! If you’ve a heroic rescue in mind, now would be a really good time. My heart hammered against my rib cage. Even with the protection spell, I was covered in sweat. I felt the heat seeping through, burning my mouth, my throat. What little air I could get was so hot, it hurt to breathe.

No one’s coming. The realization hit me like an iceberg dropped into my stomach, despite the heat all around me. No one will get here in time. I’m going to burn to death, just like the witches of old. Now my heart was beating so fast, it felt like one long whir. Futilely, I covered my head with my arms and squeezed my eyes shut.

Oh, God. This is going to hurt so, so bad. At least it’ll be quick. Please, God, let it be quick.

Just as I was sure the fire would claim me, I saw a blinding flash of white. I honestly thought it was because I was about to die. Then, I heard a strange sound. It was faint inside my fiery prison. It took me a moment to recognize the sound as glass shattering. The hourglass had exploded, the way it always did at the end of a game. Outside the window, I saw its brightness light up the nighttime sky. Tournament was over.

And so am I.

About the Author:

Hi! I’m Ilana Waters, USA Today bestselling author of the Mage Tales.

I write urban fantasy for those who like it fast, funny, and fierce. If you’re into cross-blended creatures (think witch-vampire hybrids and half-breed mages) and supernatural ass-kicking, I’m all over that. Ditto if your book turn-ons are equal parts creepy and action-packed (think ancient cities and crypts combined with beheadings and bombs).

Sadie’s down for a flirty fling, but Miles has other plans. He’s got a huge crush, and just one week to convince Sadie they were meant for a happily ever after.

SADIE

“What’ll it be?” I looked at Miles after grabbing Ethan’s beer and a Diet Coke for myself.

“What do you have?”

I leaned over and hung on the refrigerator door, surveying its contents. “Corona Light, some cheap boxed wine, orange juice, Diet Coke, Dr Pepper, milk, water.” Miles hadn’t answered, and when I turned back, I caught him dragging his gaze away from my butt. “French vanilla creamer…” I teased, boring my eyes into him. He knew he was busted, but he played it off smoothly.

Miles chuckled. “I was going to say Dr Pepper, but you may have just sold me on the Coffee-Mate.” I grinned at his witty comeback, and his face lit up. Then he winked, and my heart skipped a beat.

There are all kinds of winkers in this world: the squinty winker, the rapid winker, the slow-motion winker, the blinker, the can’t-get-my-eye-closed-all-the-way half-blinker, and my least favorite, the over winker. Like Goldilocks, I decided Miles’s wink was just right.

“I’d have pegged you for a beer man,” I replied, handing Miles a Dr Pepper.

“I’m actually more of a wine guy. But I’ve just learned that wine with hamburgers is gross, and I’m trying to impress you.” I pressed my lips together. Was he teasing me or flirting with me? Because it sounded like a little of both.

Excerpt:

His beautiful daughter beamed as she held the cricket set aloft, Nathanial standing tall and proud beside her. ‘Daddy bought me the cricket set.’

Miss Stanbury looked from Rose and Nathanial to Lawrence and back again, her face lighting with a smile. ‘Well, look at that. I’m so glad your father saw sense in the end.’ She met Lawrence’s gaze over their heads, her eyes glittering with victory. ‘That’s wonderful.’ He stared at her, his smile fixed and his heart pounding with frustration. Did the woman not see how condescending she sounded? ‘Wonderful or not. I thought it important you knew I am not the tyrant you clearly consider me.’ Dragging his gaze from hers, Lawrence looked at his children. ‘Come, Rose. Nathanial. Let’s leave the nice lady to her work.’ He took their hands before looking at Esther once more. ‘It was…interesting meeting you.’

Her gaze shadowed as she glared, her smile too bright to be sincere. ‘I hardly thought you a tyrant, Mr Culford.’

‘Good, then the matter is settled.’

He turned towards the department exit and didn’t look back…regardless of the almost overwhelming urge to do so.

The woman had infuriated him, bewildered him and left him feeling she’d ended the conversation on her terms once again. Damnation!

5 Things Every Historical Fiction book should include…

Here are five things I believe every reader wants to find between the pages of a historical fiction novel:

  • A sense of time

It’s important that the reader feels grounded in history as soon as they begin to read – or at least by the end of the first page…ideally, the first paragraph. How do authors do this? For me, it’s all about the language used in dialogue, the objects, clothes and food in the scene. Using the odd old English phrase or word, adding an object rarely, or better still, never used today will go a long way to ‘showing’ the reader, the story is set in the past or even which period.

  • A sense of place

Setting is vital in historical fiction – it’s the author’s job to create as rich a setting as possible. Buildings, horses, carriages, balls, lighting or a dark, cobbled street can bring the setting alive. The more the reader pictures in their mind, the quicker they will read. As authors, we want our readers to ‘see’ the scenes unfold as though they are watching a movie…

  • Costume

Another vital ingredient that deserves a slot all of its own – there is a reason why we call historical movies and TV shows, “costume dramas.” Clothes are vitally important to bring colour, romance and vitality to a historical novel. Dresses, bustles and hoops, cravats, boots, hairstyles and jewellery are a simple way to transport a reader back in time.

  • Old-fashioned Romance

My focus is more on historical romance than mainstream fiction, so this sub-genre gives the reader and I a chance to indulge in moments of old-fashioned gallantry that, if I’m honest, I still love to experience in today’s world. In my historical romances, I take full advantage of my heroes and male secondary characters opening doors, pulling out chairs, kissing gloved hands and generally treating the females as genteelly as possible…without being sickly sweet, of course!

  • And finally…social conventions and restrictions

I love to write about women fighting against the societal obstacles they had at the time – their sexist struggles are the background for all my historical work. Showing these conventions and restrictions provides a premise for my novels where I can explore and enjoy watching how my hero and heroine fight against them and, ultimately overcome them, in order to achieve their goals, grow and develop.

I love writing strong women who wish to expand their lives and change things for other women…with the hero’s full approval and support. It’s often the hero’s support and encouragement that makes me fall head over heels in love with my him…

Plans For The Future…

I was thrilled when Independent Authors asked me to share what my plans are for the future. Why? Well, I have been getting ultra-focused on 2019 since November 2018. This level of ‘pre-planning’ is a first for me and it has been SO liberating.

For a long time, I’ve wondered how other authors manage to get so much done. Have their fingers in so many pies and managing to appear here, there and everywhere at promo events. I was under the disillusion that my current productivity was all I could manage.

It seems that’s not true if you have a plan in place – if you are clear on what you want to get done each day, and stick to it, amazing things happen.

So, I bought planners for the end of 2018 and the whole of 2019 and mapped out my working week (Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm) and then segmented days for SPECIFIC tasks. For example, blog posts, query letters, interviews and social media planning on Monday, novel writing on Tuesday, visiting my mum and household stuff on Wednesday… you get the idea!

Guess what? By sticking to this, my days have become hugely productive to the point that I can’t quite believe I wasn’t working this way all along.

So, what are my 2019 goals?

– Secure one new book contract…preferably two!

– Have at least one non-fiction magazine article published every other month

– More guest author visits on websites

– Act on every opportunity as it presents itself

For the books, I’d ideally like to secure a new series contract for a Georgian idea I am working on as well as a shorter novel trilogy which will be contemporary romance set in New York. I am so excited about both of these projects. As for now though, I am working on the final draft of the third book in my Pennington’s Department Stores series which I hope will release in the Autumn. Watch this space!

A sweet, yet steamy new adult romance about a girl who’s not ready to fall in love and a boy who isn’t ready to let her go.

Beau

She is beautiful, probably the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen, but she’s damaged.

Her a-hole exboyfriend broke her.

I still want her.

I can show her that all men aren’t the same

That I’m different.

Mallory

He’s everything I need to stay away from, and I try.

I really do, but he’s relentless.

So, I give in and let him have me.

All of me.

I should have known better.

Read an Excerpt:

I spend my days wondering what she’s doing.

Is she okay?

Is she out drinking herself to death like I am as I try to block out the pain?

Or, the worst one of all, did she get over me and move on to someone new? I think that thought tears me up the most. I know we haven’t been apart long, but the phrase “to get over someone you have to get under someone else” haunts me.

Thinking about her in some other man’s arms, his lips kissing her soft skin, his hands roaming her body, makes me sick. The only thing that helps numb the suckiness that has become my life is the whiskey.

I grab the bottle of Jack beside my bed and take a swallow, then chase it down with another and another until the pain doesn’t hurt quite as much. But no matter how much I drink, there’s always a dull ache that is Mallory.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
cover_smuggler
Excerpt:
At the other end of the terminal was another set of steel doors—simple double doors leading right out to the street, daylight and fresh air strobing through each time someone exited; cabs lined up and waiting, freedom lingering out there.
I hoisted my bag over my shoulder, bypassing the baggage carousels where a cop was walking around with a dog, and headed towards the doors. A single Customs Agent was perched on a stool to the far right, reading a magazine. As I got about a third of the way there, he seemed to stir. I changed direction ever so slightly.
He roused himself. A small group was moving toward him from the right, but he seemed to ignore them.
I looked out the corner of my eyes for someone, anyone I could fall in behind, but everyone seemed blissfully out of reach—and I imagined this is what it must feel like to drown: to take one last desperate look at help swimming strongly away.
Then the agent sauntered ever so slowly out into the middle of the room. My heart raced. Then he looked up. I saw it coming, could feel it coming. Oblivious to the rest of the herd, he’d singled me out; and for a second I felt I might just swoon right there. Then some sort of instinct kicked in. I resigned myself to being questioned and headed right at him.
For some seconds he hung back as I did my best to play the part of the unassuming traveler.
“Where are you coming from, sir?” he asked, at an angle.
“Paris,” I said.
“Can I see your ticket?”
I handed him my ticket.
“How long were you in Paris?”
“A week.”
“What were you doing there?”
“Business.”
“What kind of business.”
“Magazine. Publishing.”
“What magazine?”
And here I faltered. Nun Civa Orcus. What the hell was that? My mind raced for all sorts of explanations. For a second I considered making something up. But that would only mean trouble. You tend to say stupid things when you veer from the script like that. Someone might ask your name, for instance, and under duress you might say Peter Rabbit or Dick Nixon, who the hell knew? Had he detected my hesitation? I had to speak.
