Seventeen-year-old Rena Mason counts the days until she can leave for college. Every night her father drinks himself to sleep, leaving her to care for her younger brother. When her father is kidnapped by terrorists, her dreams of freedom become a nightmare.

She learns the tough guy at school has a reason to look after her – he’s working for a government agency with the same goal as the terrorists: find a woman who disappeared eighteen years ago. Time is running out since only this woman’s special gift can save the world from a looming nuclear attack.

Rena can’t trust anyone, especially not the stone-cold agent she’s falling for. Can they save the world before Rena’s feelings trap her in an agent’s fight for justice?

Fear Justice contains elements of fantasy, sci-fi, and paranormal, with a clean romance. It’s the first book in an exciting new series called The Fear Chronicles.

Excerpt:

Tony cleared his throat. “You said your dad was kidnapped?”

“Last night. Coach and my dad were friends. They joined the Army together.” Why was I babbling? Tony didn’t need to know my life story. “I showed up this morning because I thought he might know why these people were after my dad.”

“Did either of them tell you?”

I shook my head and looked at Tony. “The man who beat up Coach Andrews—he said he’d give me a head start before hunting me down.”

Again, Tony glanced in the mirror. “He didn’t happen to say he drives a black Lincoln, did he?”

As I spun in the seat and leaned over the headrest to see, the belt cut into my neck. Behind us, a black car crept closer with every second. Someone in the passenger seat leaned out of the window with a gun. “There’s a man with a gun following us and I’m not freaking out. At least, I don’t think I am.”

“No, you’re cool.”

With a bitter laugh, I turned back around and dropped down on the red vinyl seat. “Cool? When are you going to ask why I’m not afraid?”

Tony hit the brakes and made a turn that left me choking from the belt’s grip. “Right after you ask why I picked you up.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

C.C. Bolick grew up in south Alabama, where she’s happy to still reside. She’s an engineer by day and a writer by night—too bad she could never do one without the other.

Camping, fishing… she loves the outdoors and the warm Alabama weather. For years she thought up stories to write and finally started putting them on paper back in 2006. If you hear her talking with no one to answer, don’t think she’s crazy. Since talking through her stories works best, a library is her worst place to write… even though it’s her favorite!

C.C. loves to mix sci-fi and paranormal—throw in a little romance and adventure and you’ve got her kind of story. She’s written nine books including the Leftover Girl series, The Agency series, and The Fear Chronicles.

Read an Excerpt:

I closed my eyes to rest. However, I saw that a wound had been revealed to me. It wanted to be healed. Facing this would be a challenge but I knew it would be transformational. I had to be a champion of my own life, my own health. I had to address the deeper issue of what had caused my disease. With many months or doctor’s appointments, a dramatic change in diet, rest in spirit, and loving support from my closest people, I began to move into a new space of gentle love for myself. I was getting exactly what I needed to shift into healing mode. Even my doctor looked my husband straight in the eye and said, “Do not give Shari ANY emotional stress until she gets better.” Within weeks I was served with divorce papers. My husband told me he knew I was weak so he offered to drive me there to sign them.

Ella Quinn: The Seduction of Lady Phoebe

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Ella Quinn will award a $25 Amazon gift card to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Polite society has its rules for marriage. But for Ella Quinn’s eligible bachelors, their brides will show them that rules are for the faint of heart . . .

Phoebe Stanhope is not a typical Lady. As feisty as she is quick witted, no one can catch her, especially when she is driving her dashing phaeton with its perfectly matched horses. And unlike her peers, experience has guarded her against a growing list of would-be suitors. But when she encounters Marcus Finley, what she fears most burns deep within his blue-eyed gaze . . .

For Lord Marcus, the spark of recognition is but a moment in the love he has held these many years. Now that he’s returned to England, all the happiness he desires rests on Lady Phoebe never finding out that he was the one who turned her heart so cold and distant. He must work fast to gain the advantage—to convince her what she wants is exactly what she denies—but in order to seduce her into his arms, he must be willing to give up more than he can control . . .

Read an Excerpt

Phoebe walked briskly into the large, sunny breakfast room, the train of her pale green nankeen riding habit draped over one arm.

She greeted her brother, Geoffrey, the sixth Earl of Cranbourne. “Good morning.”

When he looked up from his newssheet and met her gaze, Phoebe saw the fatigue etched in his face.

“Oh, you poor dear,” she said. “Is it the baby?” Miles was Geoffrey and his wife, Amabel’s six-month-old son.

“Yes,” Geoffrey replied. “He’s getting his first tooth. I dare say, had I’d known he would be in this much pain, I would have recommended to him that he not bother.”

Grinning, Phoebe said, “I am sure he would have appreciated the advice.”

Geoffrey handed her a section of the newssheet, and they sat in companionable silence until her sister-in-law joined them.

After pouring a cup of tea, Amabel asked Phoebe, “When do you leave for Town?”

She swallowed a piece of toast. “Next week.”

“I do wish I could go with you,” Amabel said.

“What a whisker!” Phoebe smiled. “You have no desire at all to go to London and dance attendance on me, and, indeed, I have no wish for you to have to do so. I am quite content to stay with my Aunt St. Eth. I much prefer the political parties the St. Eths attend.”

Her sister-in-law pulled a face. “But they are so dry.”

Phoebe laughed when Amabel wrinkled her nose. “I know, for you the subject is a dead bore, but I enjoy it extremely.”

Her sister-in-law frowned. “My dear, how will you ever find a husband if you are attending only political parties?”

“It is not as if there are no unmarried gentlemen at the parties,” Phoebe retorted. “Besides, I daresay I have met every unmarried gentleman the length and breadth of England. Not one has given me the smallest desire to marry. Perhaps I shall set up a salon and become a famous bluestocking.”

Her sister-in-law’s mouth dropped open in shock. “You cannot mean that!”

Phoebe tried to hide her exasperation. “I know you’ve tried very hard to bring about a match for me. I wish you would not persist. I shall marry when I find a gentleman I can love and not before.”

“But you must marry,” Amabel said. “You are almost twenty-four, and you are much too beautiful to become a spinster.”

“I am well aware of my age,” Phoebe said as mildly as she could. “I’m not on the shelf yet.”

After taking a sip of tea, Amabel said airily, “I have invited my brother to visit us.”

Phoebe creased her brows. “Evesham? I thought he was too ill to travel.”

“No, Arthur is indeed too ill,” her sister-in-law said. “I have invited my other brother, Marcus. He shall arrive in three days’ time.”

“Lord Marcus?”

Amabel hesitated before continuing, “He needs to marry now, and I immediately thought of you.”

At the mention of Lord Marcus Finley, Phoebe’s stomach clenched, and the humiliation she had not felt in years burbled within her, feeding her anger.

She took a breath and calmly but firmly said, “I have met Lord Marcus, we did not suit. Amabel, pray excuse me. I have just remembered something I must do.”

Phoebe rose and left the room. Upon entering her chamber, she closed the door with a snap. The control with which she had been holding herself threatened to unravel. Lord Marcus Finley was back.

Myriad feelings of fear, hurt, and despair assailed her. It confused her to feel almost as raw as she had eight years ago when he’d shattered her childish romantic ideas. She had pushed him out of her mind then and, other than the bad dreams, had not purposely thought of him since.

She’d hoped never to hear his name again and certainly did not want to meet him. She’d learned to protect herself, but still mourned her loss of innocence he’d stolen. She would not weep over Lord Marcus. No good could come of thinking of him. Forgetting that day had been easier when he had been safely across the ocean.

Phoebe breathed deeply and strode to her writing desk, a beautiful cherry secretaire. She furiously mended her nib then took a piece of hot-pressed paper, dipped the pen in the standish, and wrote her first letter to her aunt, the Marchioness of St. Eth.

About the Author: USA Today bestselling author Ella Quinn’s studies and other jobs have always been on the serious side. Reading historical romances, especially Regencies, were her escape. Eventually her love of historical novels led her to start writing them.

She is married to her wonderful husband of over thirty years. They have a son and two beautiful granddaughters, and a Great Dane. After living in the South Pacific, Central America, North Africa, England and Europe, she and her husband decided to make their dreams come true and are now living on a sailboat. After cruising the Caribbean and North America, she completed a transatlantic crossing from St. Martin to Southern Europe. She’s currently living in Germany, happily writing while her husband is back at work, recovering from retirement.

Hell has come to collect…

…but Gisele Walker has no plans to pay the debt.

As a half-demon paranormal bounty hunter, Gisele is used to flirting with death, but stealing a curio and opening a portal to Hell’s demon court is more than your average day job.

Now, she’s partnered with an infuriatingly handsome demon, Shade, who has more levels of grey than she can count.

Who can she trust to help save the city as Baltimore burns to the ground and ghouls roam the streets?

With a white-hot attraction burning between them and secrets blocking their path, Gisele must face her past and venture into the twisted heart of the demon royal court.

But with no memory of her past…

…will she be able to save their future?

Read an Excerpt

“We’re next,” Shade breathed, echoing her panicked thoughts, “if we don’t run.”

He was right. This demon was clearly out of her league. There was no hope—they’d never survive it. She might as well turn her gun on herself now.

She could feel herself losing her composure, but couldn’t stop it. She couldn’t breathe; she couldn’t get a single breath. She pressed the cold barrel of her gun into the side of her neck so hard it ached. She clutched and tore at her collarbone.

“Stop. Look away, Gisele!” One of Shade’s hands gripped her shoulder, tight enough to bruise. The other pulled her wrist away from her neck, pointing her gun at the ground. She struggled but was weak with fear. The gun struck thunder, mirroring the sky, and Gisele jolted back against the hard line of Shade’s chest, drained.

His arms banded around her, held her up.

“Look away. I’ll stop her,” he whispered, his warm lips brushing the shell of her ear. “Don’t fear her. I’ll protect you.”

180 Days; A Teacher’s Diary

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Sofia Faye Burke will be awarding a $20 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

180 Days is a fly on the wall experience into a high school classroom over one full school year (180 days to be exact).

Written as a diary by a teacher who was struggling to cope with everything from educational reform to school shootings, this work unfolds via the teachers’ lens of controlled chaos in a broken system. This book takes the reader on a journey from the dilemma of how to make it to the restroom and back before the bell rings to the agony of an active shooter training day, including acceptance of a newfound form of professional development.

Mrs. Burke writes about the daily challenges and rewards of life within the four walls of her classroom. The work is gritty, hilarious, and heart breaking at the same time. Hang on, a school year is one wild ride.

Read an Excerpt

Day 19: The business manager of the district stopped in to grace me with his presence today during my class. Wow. I am honored but, er eh um. Awkward? Duh, uh, I am teaching a class. Does he see the students? Can’t say that to him, as he is one step away from superintendent. He had pressing matters that were of the utmost importance, hence the interruption of my instruction. He had to check on my new chairs that he so graciously purchased for my classroom and he had to lecture me about how important it is that the ‘el cheapo’ chairs not fall apart. There is history here.

The previous chairs they purchased for my classroom were of such poor construction that the screws in the backs of the chairs would twist out as if a ghost were using an invisible screwdriver and whoops, down goes another unsuspecting kid. Hence the work order. Come to think of it, maybe the school is haunted? Nah. One fine day, one of my football students stretched, the chair simply stretched with him and folded backwards like melting plastic. Rather frightening at the time as my helpless student was backward like a crab, feet and hands holding him in place. He was okay, but in the end, wheels continued to pop off with zero force and the backs of the chairs would rattle with loose screws. Oh, and the seat would snap in half if you were more than 100 pounds and did not sit precisely as to not have your cheeks caught in between hard plastic. Not comfortable and not cool. The new chairs he ordered are the same crappy plastic chairs we have breaking now. Not sure how to tell him that he chose poorly when ordering classroom furniture. I can’t bring myself to tell him of his poor choice as he gives me the creeps.

In Over Her Head: Lights, Camera, Anxiety

In Over Her Head: Lights, Camera, Anxiety

by Krysten Lindsay Hager

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   YA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

 Cecily feels like she has it all: great best friends, the beginnings of a career as a model/actress, and she’s dating her favorite singer, Andrew Holiday. Then Cecily’s best friend Lila begins to ditch her every time Lila’s boyfriend calls. Cecily feels lost, but she and Andrew begin connecting more and she’s never been in a relationship where she felt so understood. Andrew even begins to confide in her about his anxiety. Soon Cecily experiences her own anxiety on a magazine photo shoot, but she manages to impress the magazine staff. Just when it seems like all her dreams are coming true, everything comes crashing down when a photo of Andrew with another girl appears online. He swears nothing happened, but Cecily is crushed. She feels like she’s lost two of the people closest to her.

Was her perfect relationship real or was she in over her head?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cover_In Over Her Head
Excerpt:
“Good luck at the photo shoot tomorrow,” he said. “You’ll be great.”
I stared out the window on the ride back to the hotel taking in all the sites. As I walked into the hotel I felt a new air of confidence. Instead of just reading about someone going out with a pop star to some fabulous rooftop hotel restaurant and being in the big city, I was living it. This was my life and not some YA book heroine’s. Tomorrow I was off on a modeling shoot. I was living a dream and proving how I was ready for a big life. This was my destiny. I could do this.
****
My alarm went off and at the same time an alarm went off in my brain saying, no, I could not do this. What was I thinking? Me, model? That’s where people take photos of you for the sole purpose of other people looking at them, which encouraged judgement and evil comments. People don’t just keep those comments to themselves anymore. Oh no, they grab their phone or laptop or whatever device helps them spew out unhelpful and cruel comments on people’s appearances online for all the world to see.
My stomach felt like spewing all over the nice hotel sheets I was wrapped in.  Why did I ever think I was up for this? Those strangers online would destroy me within seconds. Girls like Harlow who were born with an undeniable beauty could do stuff like this and even then, I had seen strangers criticize her online when she posted selfies.
Being anxious always made all my senses go nuts. I ate two slices of toast and then my stomach did a weird flipping thing. Oh no, not today. Looking over at the clock I realized it was almost time for us to leave. Come on, stomach. You’re fine. Just relax and…nope, time to hit the bathroom. Why can’t I just be a big girl and go to this stupid shoot which most girls would kill to do without my stomach freaking out?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What books do you have planned for the future?

I’m working on the next book in the Cecily Taylor Series which has Cecily back in New York City and this time she’s in another music video, but this time it’s not for Andrew. She gets the opportunity to be in a video for another singer and also has a chance to act on television. Her career begins to take off and it causes some friction between her and Andrew as she’s now as busy as he is with her own work.

I’m also working on another YA book as well as some adult rom-coms. I have a young adult series called the Star Series that takes place in a real-life lake town (Grand Haven) and I’ve set one of the romantic comedies in a fictional lake town because I’m originally from Michigan and well, that’s where we always spent our summers! The fun part of creating your own town is you can put in the perfect romantic restaurant based on your own dreams.

Miss Felicity’s Dilemma Book Blast

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

ALL SHE WANTS IS HER OWN HOME

Miss Felicity Chambers is the new teacher of piano and deportment at Miss Manville’s Academy for Superior Girls. There is no reason a duke should contact her. There is certainly no reason she should marry his son. But that is evidently what the duke wants. Felicity should be delighted. But the orphaned schoolteacher has long since stopped believing in fairy tales. If only the duke’s son weren’t so compelling…

ALL HE WANTS IS THIS HOME

Lord Flint Bracken knows just what is behind the duke’s command, and it isn’t an attempt to secure a happily-ever-after for his son. The proposal is one of the duke’s schemes. Flint has no choice but to cooperate, though, or he risks more than his home. He risks national security. So court a penniless schoolteacher he must. He should be furious. But Felicity Chambers isn’t at all what he expected. She might very well be what he wants…

Read an Excerpt

It wasn’t until she heard the door close that she breathed a sigh of relief. Time to escape from under the bed.

“Aren’t you growing cramped under there?” Lord Flint suddenly asked.

Felicity’s eyes flew open to find an upside-down face where the boots had been. Her heart dropped like a stone.

“Not at all,” she said, proud at how composed she sounded. “I am quite petite. But you really should have someone sweep under here. The dust balls are the size of wolfhounds.”

He reached a hand under the bed. For a moment Felicity just stared at it, unable to move. Even in the shadows it was a beautiful hand, with long, elegant fingers and a strong wrist. And she noticed beautiful hands. She was also, after all, the substitute art teacher for Miss Manners Academy for Superior Girls.

“I’m getting a crick in my neck,” Lord Flint growled, wiggling his fingers.

Felicity gave up and took hold. And gasped. It felt as if she’d been rubbing her stockinged feet on the carpet on a cold winter’s day and gotten a shock. She had heard of such a thing, of course, in every Minerva Press novel she had ever secreted under her pillow. But she had always thought it a literary device. A myth.

That was no myth tingling up her arm.

Before she had a chance to do more than stare at the offending member, Lord Flint grasped her tightly and pulled her out from under the bed. She came out in a tangle of arms and legs, dragging dust after her.

How mortifying, she thought, brushing madly at her sensible gray kerseymere skirts.

“Er….”

She looked up and forgot what she was going to say. She forgot her name.

He was beautiful. Tall and lean and russet-haired, with eyes the color of spring leaves and a humorous cant to his mouth. Chiseled features, square shoulders, slim hips. Hard and sharp as quartz.

Suddenly his name wasn’t so funny.

What do we do when opportunity knocks at our door? Is it fate that brings us together with those we love most? What constitutes a family and what obligations do we have to those around us? Through his relationships and experiences on and off the green, Jack discovers many of life’s lucky chances.

Excerpt One:

We were alone that day. She was already in place when I arrived. Sam turned when I entered. She spun around quickly, startled by my entrance. I had apparently interrupted some secret contemplation. She gave a little jerk with her head. She blew smoke into the air, while throwing her hair out of her eyes. We shared a brief, but natural, greeting as I entered the steamy, chlorine-scented room. I remember a glinting instant of eye contact, which remained in place for a moment longer than might be expected. The only sound filling the room was the methodical whirring of the machines.

When I first saw her, I recall feeling flushed by a sense of confusion, or a nervous anxiety. I became inextricably distracted. I was struck stupid, all of a sudden. I couldn’t focus on my work. I fumbled with simple tasks that I had executed quite proficiently for the better part of my life. I was no stranger to laundry duties, but in those few moments, i appeared dumbfounded by the simple chore of loading a washer. I had trouble putting a quarter in the machine. I cast the very real appearance of someone who needed help, and Samantha took the opportunity to lend a hand. Clumsy male struggling with laundry duty, adept female coming to the rescue; the scene seems ludicrously formulaic and fraudulent, but it is nonetheless our story.

Topic:  What can we expect from you in the near future?

I acquired my latest idea while lying on the floor of my yoga studio, during a relaxation posture.  That sort of thing happens to me all the time. I will write another love story, but one that is set within an environment that involves political intrigue and danger.  Once again, the underlying theme will follow along the pattern of my first book, Lucky Chance. That theme is a love affair affected and tested within the highly unexpected events, which life tends to present.  This time, the stakes will be far higher.  Will my love affair endure? Will my couple survive.?

My protagonist is named Jack Weatherlow.  He is a consultant for the American Hotel Industry.  Having established his reputation at one of the popular luxury hotel chains, Jack is called upon by that chain for a very special assignment.  Jack travels to Paris, France in order to oversee the opening of the newest international property.  While there he discovers that the assignment will require an extended stay.  At this point his beloved wife, Samantha, is asked to join him for the remainder of his engagement.  The couple begin a temporary stay in the city in which Samantha was raised.  Sam is an American by birth but has been raised in France by adoptive parents.

While at the hotel Jack is rudely reminded of his first mentor’s humorously ominous words.  He heard them at his initial hiring, and has watched their veracity unfold throughout his career.  “People come to the Hotel to do what they will not do at home.”  Through that admonition, Jack learns of certain unbelievable political dealings that suggest of secret international collusion in American Industry and economic manipulation involving the houses of American leadership and authority.

Does he share this information?  Would anyone believe his story?  Does he share it with Samantha, with whom he has no secrets? Does he do anything?  Is he courageous or smart enough?  And does he involve his beloved.  The remainder of the story is waiting to be written.

He had tumbleweed in his blood, moving from one town to the next. Traveling to where there was trouble, Dalton Moon was hired to tame wild places with a fast draw and an iron will. Lacy Tyrell knew that Dalton wouldn’t be around long and she shouldn’t be tempted by him. But like the moon, his pull on her was a natural, powerful force that she was helpless to resist.

Read an Excerpt:

“I don’t view women that way. Mostly, I figure that if a man thinks that a woman who can whip up a good meal, birth and raise decent children, and keep him in check is ‘weak,’ then he doesn’t deserve her.”

Her heart thrummed happily and she smiled, thinking that this man had somehow become even more attractive. “You truly believe that?”

“You doubt me?”

She let out a little sigh of contentment. Noticing a cocklebur in Cry Baby’s mane, she removed her gloves and worked it loose from the long, white hair. “You’re an interesting man, Dalton Moon. In fact, you’re nothing like I thought you’d be.” She tossed aside the offending bur.

“What did you imagine I’d be like?” He unbuttoned his coat and leaned a forearm on his saddle horn.

“A strutting, preening, cold-hearted, trigger-happy bore.”

His brows shot up and a startled laugh erupted from his chest. “All that, huh?”

“It is your reputation,” she informed him, archly as she tucked her gloves under her coat’s belt. “You must know that. If you aren’t in the habit of drawing your gun and shooting at people, then how did you acquire it?”

“Through wagging tongues and shameless liars,” he answered in a contemptuous tone. “I am fast on the draw. I don’t deny that. But I’m not eager to pull the trigger. I will, mind you, in defense of my life or someone else’s.”

Wait Book Blast

What are you waiting for?

Everyone has endured the endless traffic light, the queue that goes nowhere, the elevator music piped through the phone line. But what of those periods in your life when everything seems on hold? When you can’t do the next thing in your professional or personal life because you can’t get to it?

Waiting—be it for health, a life partner, a child, a job—can be an agony. The persistently unrealized goal feels like an endless road. And hope’s constant deferment can be exhausting. A firm answer against the thing you’re hoping for—”no”—might be easier than this constant lack of closure. It might be easier to give it up.

But what if waiting means to be something else? Waiting doesn’t have to mean idleness. Our prolonged state of need might teach us to look beyond the desired goal to something infinitely better. We find lessons on this throughout the Bible and, if we are paying attention, in our own lives.

Rather than fostering frustration, periods of waiting might have great truths to tell us. It might show us that hope is worthwhile. Waiting might even be a gift in and of itself.

Read an Excerpt

The first lesson of waiting is that we are on the outside. Like the boy on the sideline; like the not-engaged friend who pins wedding gowns on Pinterest; like me squinting for lines that fail to emerge on the pregnancy test; none of us–whether or not we are actively waiting– is where we want to be. This might not seem true, of course. This actually might seem patently untrue. You might be happily ensconced in a loving family, a marriage, a tight-knit circle of friends. You might belong to a country club or a sorority, a church, a civic group.

But, like that of all who wait, the human condition is actually a condition of being on the outside, an unhappy state that writers and poets have noticed since time out of mind. It’s true of all of us, but we manage to obscure it from ourselves with all manner of distraction: accumulated wealth and possessions, meaningful or frivolous activity, even what is truly good and beautiful.

The problem is that you can’t contend with something if you simultaneously ignore it. And the fact of our exile–the fundamental state of all human existence–is not going away.

Waiting can teach us this.
