Poisoned Pawn

Poisoned Pawn

by David Siegel Bernstein

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Detective, Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Caleb Jacobs is a man with a past. After serving on a failed dark ops assignment in Afghanistan, he leaves Marine Corps Intelligence to try to build a new life in Philadelphia as a homicide police detective.

Jacobs is happy, for a time, until he is assigned to solve the murder of Shannon Faraday. During the investigation, he is convinced the evidence points to him as the killer. He knows it is only a matter of time before other investigators see the same. He has no alibi and the clock is counting down.

Behind his partner’s back, Jacobs hires a private investigator named Lawrence Holmes. The PI is an irritation to the police, but he is unmistakably brilliant. And, many powerful people in the city owe him favors. Holmes is a bit odd. He insists on calling Jacobs Watson but claims to never have heard the name Sherlock. Jacobs can live with this kind of crazy as long as together they find the real killer.

They quickly link the murder to a series of seemingly unrelated crimes occurring throughout Philadelphia, and Jacobs becomes convinced the murder is related to the truth of what had happened during his time in Afghanistan. Old secrets have come back to haunt him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
I felt like shit for having to hire a private investigator, especially one who was most likely insane. Still, I couldn’t deny that his type of crazy got results. Reluctantly I handed over an envelope to the man sitting on the sun-bleached bench.
He opened it. Satisfied with my offering, he slid it into his jacket. “Ah, Watson,” he said. “Good to see you again.”
I shook my head and dropped onto the bench next to him. “My name is Jacobs. Caleb Jacobs,” I said, hoping the reminder might stick this time.
He turned to me. “Did you say something?”
I sighed. “No, Holmes.”
If I wasn’t desperate for his help, I’d strangle him. Of course my superiors at the Philadelphia Homicide Unit wouldn’t appreciate that. But I wondered if a cop hiring a private investigator was any worse of a violation. I needed Lawrence Holmes for his connections and unique viewpoint, things my PHU colleagues couldn’t provide. He might not be the fictional character he played at, but he was a talented PI.
An Interview with the Author:
1. How long have you been a published author?
My first official credit was a fantasy short published Anotherrealm back in 2002. During the next 18 years I’ve accumulated over a 100 publication credits. Much of this work has been featured in literary and genre anthologies (including Best of issues). My nonfiction has been published in academic journals, newsletters, book chapters, science fiction magazines, and a 2017 book.
2. Do you have any new releases coming soon?
Well now that you mention it, yes, I do. It is titled Poisoned Pawn. It is the story of Caleb Jacob, a man with a dark past. After serving on a failed dark ops assignment in Afghanistan, he leaves Marine Corps Intelligence to try to build a new life in Philadelphia as a homicide police detective.
During an investigation, Jacobs becomes convinced the murder he is assigned to solve is related to the truth of what had happened during his time in Afghanistan. Old secrets have come back to haunt him.
3. If you could co-write with another author who would it be?
If he were still alive, I’d say Harlan Ellison. My living choice is Neil Gaiman.
4. Do you listen to music while writing? If yes, what songs are your favorites?
I do when creating, but not so much when editing. Here is the Poisoned Pawn song list:
It is as dark and sexy as the novel.
Time Rages On by Aaron Kaplan
5. What genres do you write in?
I like writing mysteries and thrillers but I’m mostly known for my science fiction. My nonfiction is mostly about science. A SF/science mashup is my book Blockbuster Science: The Real Science in Science Fiction. If you do a hard internet search you just might find some poetry under my name.
6. If you could write anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I have no preference. There are places I’d like to visit… but then I wouldn’t be writing, I’d be touring. Now if you give me a beer and quiet place, I’ll pump out the words.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
To support his writing addiction and excessively extravagant lifestyle, David Siegel Bernstein, PhD, is a data scientist who consults as a forensic statistician. That sounds really boring until you realize that his clients include the US National Security Agency (NSA), the Secret Service, the FBI, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and a host of other acronymonious agencies who cultivate exciting and shadowy reputations. Alas, those reputations are mere facades that disguise the real reason these organizations exist, which is to keep him entertained and fed.
When David wants a break from this spellbinding work, he writes. His fiction credits encompass two novelettes and sixty shorts. His nonfiction has appeared in newsletters, popular blogs, academic journals and he is the author of the book Blockbuster Science: The Real Science in Science Fiction.
He lives within the shadow of Philadelphia with his wife, Michelle, two children, Seth and Gwendolyn, and a dog named Ringo Biggles Woofington.
Goddess of the Wild Thing
Goddess of the Wild Thing
by Paul DeBlassie III
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Thriller

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Winner of the Independent Press Award and the NYC Big Book Award for Visionary Fiction!
Eve Sanchez, a scholar of esoteric studies, is driven into unreal dimensions of horror and hope as she encounters a seductive and frightening man, criminal lawyer Sam Shear.
Sam introduces Eve to a supernatural world in which the wicked powers of a surrogate mother’s twisted affection threaten love and life. Struggling to sort through right from wrong, frightened yet determined, Eve nears despair.
Goddess of the Wild Thing reveals the dramatic tale of one woman’s spiritual journey where metaphysical happenings, unexpected turns of fate, and unseen forces impact her ability to love and be loved.
In the magical realm of Aztlan del Sur, a mythopoeic land of hidden horrors and guiding spirits, Eve, with three friends and a wise old woman, is caught in an age-old struggle about love—whether bad love is better than no love— and discovers that love is a wild thing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Eve sharpened her focus. She saw the sharp nail of a witch’s right finger tracing Graciéla’s image on a foggy mirror in a grungy bathroom, touching the center of the mirror with a hatred so intense, the glass burned red hot. The mirror in Graciéla’s kitchen cracked. Shards jettisoned at the old healer then were magically warded off and drifted in place about her head and neck.

Graciéla’s energy, tired as she was, had fended off the pointed shards. She hadn’t been impaled. But the strain had ushered her from one world to the next. Death came not by the hand of another but by a weakened mind and body defending itself.

Eve, shaken, allowed her soft touch to stay on Graciéla’s forehead, confirming the horror of what she’d seen. Shamanic wisdom, often discussed between the two kindred souls, spoke to Eve as she stroked her friend’s head, remembering that death provided passage for one whose life had been well spent and whose time had come.

Eve wept.

After a few moments, she closed her friend’s green eyes and whispered tenderly, “Always my friend, always love, always together in life and in death.” She stood and wiped the tears from her eyes. A gray-brown, green-eyed, great horned owl hooted from the largest cottonwood branch outside the back window.

Eve heard Shirley finishing her call to the EMTs and police, and then walking to the front of the store to await their arrival.

One large shard lay at the end of the table, sharp tip pointed outward. It reflected Eve’s image, a glowing red ember menacingly centered at the brow point.

Learn More About This Author:

Do you have any music you listen to regularly while writing? If so, what music do you listen to?

I step into my study, sit at my desk, arrange the stone fetishes carved by New Mexican Natives, then pop onto YouTube and turn on Psychedelic Trance. Shamanic music suspends the mental critic, the old supernatural masters (Algernon Blackwood, H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, and Arthur Machen) then come forward and take center stage. While writing Goddess of the Wild Thing, shamanic trance music of the yogic goddess of birth and death, Kali, ushered the story into realms dark, mysterious, and unexpected.

Trinity and Jeff

Trinity and Jeff

by Kate Hill

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Erotic Paranormal Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Denying her love for her childhood friend, Jeff, Trinity visits her family’s ancestral land, believing the Wild family magic has called her there to meet her soulmate. Instead she finds danger at every turn, but she won’t have to face it alone.

Jeff has loved Trinity his whole life, but settled for friendship after she broke his heart on prom night. Now this soldier turned firefighter faces the supernatural to protect Trinity and convince her once and for all that they belong together.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
She steered her car up the gravel driveway leading to the cabin. Her heart beat faster and her stomach lurched. As usual, she felt him — the familiar warmth of her oldest friend — as soon as she saw him.
“No,” she murmured. “I don’t believe this!”
She pulled her car next to Jeff, who stared at her from where he leaned against his motorcycle, his long, denim-clad legs spread wide and his muscular arms folded across his chest. His snug black T-shirt clung to his gorgeous, broad-shouldered torso. A slight summer breeze toyed with thick sable hair that hung almost to his shoulders. He’d just started growing a beard, so sexy dark stubble outlined his angular face.
Damn him. Why did he have to be so attractive? Would her destined mate look as good? Not that it mattered. Personality and integrity counted more than looks, but knowing that fueled her annoyance. Jeff was not only a fine physical specimen, but loyal, courageous, and in his own rough way, a genuinely sweet guy. Furious, she threw open the car door, stepped out, and slammed it behind her.
“What the hell are you doing here?” She glared at him, tapping her foot on the gravel. Her flip-flops probably made the motion more comical than intimidating, but she didn’t care. She was too angry.
“Trin, I’ll explain –”
“Damn right you will. You’ve always known about the family magic. You know why I’m here — to meet my soulmate. Jeff, you cannot be here.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topic:  What do you have planned for the future?

Regarding writing, I feel very lucky because I’ve never run out of ideas–at least not yet. Right now I’m working on the last book in my Fangs and Fists series, and after that I’m starting the Heaven’s Demons series, which is already planned and will be released by Changeling Press. This year I also have several indie releases planned, including The Darkness Therein, the second book in my Ancient Blood vampire series. This is a re-release that will include fresh edits and additional scenes. I will also be releasing a new science fiction romance called Warrior Priest. It is currently in the final editing stage. Other indie releases are planned as well, but not within the next several months. I hope to be busy writing for years to come.

He’s a hot mess. She wants stability. Will these childhood sweethearts risk another pass at love?

Veterinarian Holly Nicholson longs to put down roots. And with a growing practice and pending nuptials to a handsome doctor, her dream future is finally within reach. But when her NASCAR racing high-school steady rolls into town, Holly’s heart takes an off-track excursion.

Curtis “CC” Clark burned out from life in the fast lane. Switching gears, he moves to a small town in search of some cosmic signpost to reveal his destiny and crosses paths with the only girl he’s ever loved. But he’s worried fate sent him into the pits when he finds out she’s engaged.

Between working at the same animal shelter and her engagement crumbling, Holly can feel old desires stirring. But before they can pick up speed, CC gets his big chance for a high-profile comeback. And returning to the road may mean giving up his beloved forever.

Can CC and Holly find common ground and take their love across the finish line?

Restart in Bristol is the third standalone novel in the Racing Hearts in Serenity contemporary romance series. If you like bad boys with a heart of gold, strong women, and a touch of new age spirituality, then you’ll adore Sedona Hutton’s fun, sexy romance.

Read an Excerpt

Curtis Clark stepped back to scrutinize his work. The split rail fence he’d just built was kick-ass…the rest of his life, not so much.

Taking a gulp of water, he frowned. Life was like a nightmare he couldn’t wake up from. Two months ago, he’d been living the dream racing in the NASCAR Truck Series, and now he was doing random carpentry jobs. He rubbed at the tight feeling in his chest and got back to work. He’d just placed the next piece of wood when something fuzzy brushed against his leg. He jerked back and then laughed when a wriggling black Lab squeezed in between him and the fence.

“Hey, there.” CC squatted down to rub the Lab’s neck and was rewarded with a doggie grin. “Where did you come from?”

The dog licked his face, eliciting happy memories from CC’s childhood. “You’re a sweet girl,” he cooed after taking a peek to determine gender. “Are you a stray?”

“She’s not a stray.”

His mind and body vibrated like his truck engine at the beginning of a race. He hadn’t heard that female voice in over ten years, but it was ingrained in his heart and his soul. He couldn’t turn around, couldn’t move, couldn’t even breathe.

Holly Nicholson—his high school sweetheart, the love of his life…the woman who had shattered his heart.

AJ Ryan is a publicity nightmare. After a questionable photo surfaces and his biggest sponsor threatens to pull out, the NASCAR champion admits it might be time to hit the brakes. Thankfully, his new no-nonsense image consultant knows just where to start… too bad she revs his engine so loudly he can barely think straight.

Ella Fisher’s career is a welcome distraction from her poor taste in men. Fresh off another easily avoidable heartbreak, rehabbing AJ’s career is just the diversion she needs. But when the pulse-pounding client actually listens to her advice, Ella wonders if there’s more to the man behind the hot mess.

When Ella is granted guardianship of three boisterous children under the misconception that she and AJ are a couple, AJ surprises her by going along with the charade. Before long they find themselves in a make-shift family that feels more real than pretend.

As their professional relationship takes a hard turn for the personal, a single overheard conversation could make it all go up in flames. Will Ella and AJ’s romance hit the wall, or will love take the checkered flag?

The Perfect Lap is the second standalone novel in the Racing Hearts of Serenity romance series. If you like bad boys with a heart of gold, strong women, and love stories with a new age twist, then you’ll adore Sedona Hutton’s fun, sexy tale.

“I bet you have a beautiful smile,” he drawled, then lowered his mouth to hers.

She should have pulled away—she didn’t know this man from Adam. But everything inside her protested. After gazing into each other’s eyes, she felt like she knew him intimately.

His lips were warm and tingly, his kiss pure perfection…and he drew back way too quickly. He blinked those deep blue eyes and gave her a lazy grin. “I knew it.” He rubbed the pad of his thumb over her lower lip. “Beautiful.”

That’s when she realized she was smiling.

He rose, and she gave him a quick once over, taking in the sexy stubble on his face, the taut muscles of his chest, his lean physique. As good old-fashioned lust rolled through her like a quick-moving thunderstorm, she silently bemoaned her situation. This was a hell of a time to have a newly implemented man-ban.

“Keep smiling.” Stuffing his hands in his pockets, he winked at her. “It suits you,” he added in that low, sexy drawl. Then he sauntered off.

Her breath caught as she spun around to gape at him. He’d just kissed her and now he was leaving? She contemplated calling him back, then reconsidered. She had other fish to fry.

Even so, she couldn’t stop herself from tracking his every move as he swaggered toward the party, his backside looking every bit as fine as the rest of him. Pressing a hand to her chest, she let out a slow exhale. Even though she was one-hundred percent committed to her man-ban, she could admit—at least to herself—that the sexy, charming stranger had intrigued her.

Not to mention finding the answers to questions some people would rather she not know. Is she strong enough for what lies ahead?

“Did he just hit us?” I asked, turning around. I couldn’t see anything behind us except the vague shape of a car with a silhouetted driver—it was so close the headlights weren’t visible.

“Yes!”

We were speeding up, already going way too fast for this road, but the car was still right on the truck’s bumper.

I clutched the dashboard as Jack tried zig-zagging a bit to shake the guy, but it didn’t work. Then the truck accelerated, and finally the guy fell back. Jack hit the brakes pretty hard, and I hit the door and was jerked to the floor as we took a corner sharply.

“Retta!” Jack yelled. “Are you okay?” He leaned over and gripped my arm, helping me back into the seat before speeding back up.

I put the seatbelt on before stealing a glance behind us. “I don’t see him.”

“No, I think he might not have made that corner. It’s what I was trying to do, but I never would have if I’d realized you didn’t have a seatbelt on!”

“I’m okay, it’s fine.” I shook my head, having to extricate myself from the top half of the seatbelt to pick up the phone off the floor.

The teenager she’d once known has become a jaw-dropping, dominant man in his prime.

He wasn’t looking for a relationship until she blazed back into his life.

Graham runs his own construction business, remodeling homes, and building brand new ones. When his buddy gives him a lead on a new project, he never expects to run into Phoebe, the woman he shared a single kiss with eons ago. Nor is he prepared for the Dominant in him to stake his claim before the end of their first meeting. He wanted her in high school but there had been too wide a gulf separating them. Now, Graham will stop at nothing until he makes her his. But there are larger forces at work, attempting to tear them apart.

When everything Phoebe holds dear becomes a target, Graham will risk it all for the one woman he knows he can never live without.

Publisher’s Note: This steamy second chance romance contains elements of power exchange. While it is the second in the Crescent City Kings series, it can be enjoyed independently.

“Graham? Graham Layton, is that really you? You’re the contractor Dante recommended?” Joy filtered into her voice as she stared at the blast from her past. It had been almost nineteen years since the night of the winter formal in high school. The night she had always considered one of the best of her life.

Surprise filtered over his handsome features. A grin split his face wide and his thick, dark chestnut brows rose to nearly beneath his hairline, almost touching the Rayban sunglasses shoved on top of his head. There were tiny laugh lines around his eyes that crinkled.

“Phoebe, as I live and breathe. Well, aren’t you a sight?” Graham dismissed all formalities, stepped through the doorway, and surrounded her with an effusive hug. She stiffened at the impromptu embrace, but only for a moment, because the delight of seeing him overrode her internal panic button.

She caught a whiff of him, a sinful mixture of man with traces of his soap, a spicy, exotic fragrance that made her want to bury her face in his chest and just inhale him. The boy she’d known on the cusp of manhood in the intervening years had grown into a powerfully built man. A very hot man, with a killer smile and a body that made her dead hormones rise from their early grave and pay attention before he released her. It left her dumbstruck: the sudden onslaught of disappointment that rose in her chest when he released her.

Wasn’t that just the oddest thing?

“It’s great to see you. If I’d known it was you…”

Graham gave a manly half-shrug as he stepped back. “It is a surprise—a nice one, to boot.”

Then he knelt, resting his elbows on his knees so that he was at eye level with Daisy, and held his hand out for her to sniff. “And who is this?”

“Daisy, this is Graham. He’s a friend.” Daisy glanced up at her for the okay, her golden eyes searching Phoebe’s face. When Phoebe nodded in the affirmative, Daisy’s stance relaxed, and she turned into a normal, goofy dog. She snuffled Graham’s hand, and then lavished his face with a few swipes of her pink tongue against his cheek before falling at his rather large feet as he stroked her fur and gave her a belly rub. Euphoria emanated from Daisy. And, for a split second, Phoebe wondered what it would feel like to have Graham rub her belly—and further south.

“Beautiful dog.” Graham rose with Daisy following him up into a sitting position from which she stared at him with adoration. “I cannot believe you’re the one who bought Riverland Plantation. When Dante gave me your name, it didn’t ring any bells.”

“Same. I didn’t realize you were G.C. Layton of Layton Construction. For me, it’s the last name that’s different. Probably why my name didn’t sound familiar to you.” Quite a few other things had changed as well, like that she no longer believed in love or happily ever after, or that she could depend on anyone but herself.

My favorite coffee shop was a block from the subway station, and as soon as I reached the street level, I felt the rain. It fell in sheets, soaking everything and everyone in its path. It was a quiet shower, not just in the way it barely made a sound as it pelted the concrete and metal comprising Midtown West Manhattan, but also as it seemed to mute the normal noises we New Yorkers expected of our surroundings…the honking, the chatting, the clanking of machinery.

I smiled at the beauty of it, but once the first drop hit my hair, I shrieked and ran as fast as my Louboutin heels could carry me. Traffic forced me to stop at the next light, but I resumed my dash as soon as the intersection cleared, weaving haphazardly amidst a crowd of people holding everything from newspapers and briefcases over their heads. I was comforted only by the fact that clearly, no one else had thought to bring an umbrella today either.

Finally, with the coffee shop in sight, I smiled again, only to have the heel of my shoe stick in a drainage grate.

I grunted, apologized to the people whose path I was blocking, and tugged, but the shoe stuck firmly. I needed a better angle to unwedge the shoe, and the only way to achieve that would involve stepping out of the shoe and placing my bare foot on the dirty sidewalk. Unable to stomach that option, I futilely wrenched harder. My clothes and hair were already drenched, and the water pooling around my forehead was starting to drip into my eyes and obscure my view of the trapped shoe. My pride had taken a hit, but I had to retrieve my shoe without harming it. Sure, it was last year’s design that I’d bought on sale, but any Louboutin, even one on sale, was a chunk of change.

Suddenly, the rain stopped. I glanced up, as though expecting to see that God himself had performed this valued miracle, but instead, I simply saw an umbrella held firmly over my head. A man, the bearer of the umbrella, crouched down beside me.

“Let me try,” he offered, in a dreamy British accent. With a quick twist of his wrist, the shoe popped free. I stumbled backwards as the shoe came loose, and the man steadied me gracefully, a quick “whoopsie daisy,” escaping his lips.
