BLURB:

Kelly knew Little Milly Lake as Grandma Mill McInenly. The usually serious Mildred would occasionally surprise her granddaughter with tales of the fun and mischief that she and her five older sisters found growing up in the Maritimes in the early 1900s. The combination of little money or supervision, and a notoriously grumpy father, made for simple stories with just the right blend of silly and sweet.Little Milly and the Great Lakes is Kelly’s first creative writing endeavor… she has been distracted by Little Mateo and Little Lucas.

Get silly with Milly on her other adventures…Bess and the Boil, Marj and the Medal, and Peg and the Party Line.

Excerpt:

Early one morning, the gulls were still sleeping,

The Sergeant was out, and the girls’ tea was steeping,

When from the washroom came an animal’s howl:

Bess flung the door open, her rump in a towel,

“There’s a boil on my bottom and boy does it hurt!”

Marj warned, “If Pa finds out there will be no dessert!”

Discussion Topic: Tell us your plans for the future

IRL, Little Milly lived to the ripe age of 102… longevity runs in our family, so I likely have 60 years of future ahead of me. Thinking of the more immediate future, Little Milly has three more stories to tell: Ene and the Ivy, Flo and the Fishermen and Milly and the Mail. Like books 1-3, these stories will be sweet, silly and capped off with a moral. For some extra fun, we will be including likenesses of some of Little Milly’s fans in the illustrations (just a post a photo of them reading Little Milly to @littlemillyandthegreatlakes on Instagram). We will also be creating a Littly Milly and the Great Lakes Pinterest page loaded with activities for young readers, photos of the real Milly and her fans, and even a song or two.

On a personal note, I am focused on successfully ‘launching’ my sons – ages 10 and 14 – into young adulthood. So far so good… they read daily, play competitive sports, and get into just the right amount of trouble. My nieces – ages 6 and 10 – were Little Milly’s first fans, and I will continue to get to Calgary AB as often as possible to visit them… their hockey playing, mess-making and giggling always inspire my story writing. My eldest son and niece have both taken up running, a favourite hobby of mine, so I plan on sharing as many training runs with them as possible.

In the year ahead, I hope to publish a different type of book. My longtime friend and colleague Julien Leblanc and I have been working on a business book for young people. Foundation Before Creation will be a slim ‘field guide’ that teaches some of the lessons that post-secondary education does not, including Mindset, Coaching and Storytelling. Each chapter will begin with a story about a person who embodies the skill, followed by some practical techniques and tools you can use throughout your life and career.

My life partner and I are hoping to retire in seven years and relocate from Toronto to my hometown of Ottawa. We would love to live along the Rideau Canal and enjoy the tourist energy that summers bring, then hide somewhere warm when Ottawa’s brutal winters set in. I hope to continue writing, so you may see some capital-inspired stories, like Peg and the Parliamentarian, Marj and the Mint, Flo and the Feds…
