Ellerslie Book Blast

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. William Francis will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Did you know author F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda lived in a haunted house?

It’s the Jazz Age, it’s Prohibition and aviator Charles Lindbergh is the most famous person in America. Author F. Scott Fitzgerald rents a mansion in Edgemoor, Delaware called Ellerslie hoping for a quiet retreat so that he can write his next novel following The Great Gatsby.

April Ross, the first and only female history major at the University of Delaware, is commissioned by the owner of Ellerslie to research the estate’s history for a potential sale. At least, that’s what April is told. In the days ahead, April’s historical research uncovers Ellerslie’s former owners dating back to 1810. She interacts with the Fitzgeralds, yet endures unexplained occurrences and visits by an unknown woman. Against her better judgement, April eventually accepts that the woman is a ghost and realizes that her true purpose is to find out who this woman is, or was, and what happened to her in real life.

“I signed a two-year lease,” Scott said. “And I came here to get away from the noise of New York so that I could write. I also came here because I have a fascination with medieval Europe and feudalism. I wanted to study the DuPonts and their quasi-feudalism over this area and create a novel loosely based on them. Unfortunately, every time I sit down to write it nothing happens. I think my problem is that I always want to write something that’s never been written before, something unique and extraordinary rather than another rehashing of a familiar plot.”

“If the DuPont idea isn’t working, then stop trying to force it and write something else.”

“You sound like my editor, Max Perkins. He’s pretty upset with me right now. I promised him a novel by July first. That’s not going to happen.”

“Well, as they say, get crackin’. And don’t worry about your lease. I’m sure Mr. Sellers will let you break it when you tell him that Ellerslie is haunted.”

“Haunted?” Scott said with an uneasy laugh. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

“It’s not ridiculous. Mr. Sellers knows it. The maids know it. Phillipe knows it. My real purpose here is to discover the identity of a crying female ghost.”

Scott moaned. “Well, then. I guess Elena spilled the beans.”

“She did not. Marie did, but I would’ve figured it out. This female manifestation has been reaching out to me, giving me clues meant to help my investigation. Of course, if she could speak it would go a lot faster, but in life she was strangled and possibly crushed her throat. I guess this makes her spirit unable to speak. I don’t know. I’m no expert on ghosts. Have you seen her?”

“Yes, I was drunk and in the kitchen the first time, about two weeks after we moved in. I knew who she was by Mr. Sellers’ description. I didn’t believe it. I still don’t believe it.”

“Do you know anything about her?”

“Not much. Apparently, she’s been on the estate for many years. Mr. Sellers said his father knew about her and called her the ‘melancholy lady.’ Servants recalled hearing the old gentleman talk to somebody late at night, usually in the library, and when they entered the room he was the only one there. Then shortly before his death he told his son about her, said she cried all the time and he couldn’t figure out why. Mr. Sellers Junior dismissed it as the rantings of an old man. Then one tenant after another kept telling stories about a ghost or unexplained acts of violence. Junior didn’t believe them until he saw the lady for himself.”

“So Mr. Sellers told you about the lady ghost before you moved in but you signed the lease anyway?” “Yes. Zelda and I thought it might be exciting to live in a haunted house.”

The Place Beyond Her Dreams

The Place Beyond Her Dreams

by Oby Aligwekwe

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: YA, Fantasy (Black & African American Fantasy Fiction)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

“We are most courageous at our weakest; when we believe we have faced what we fear the most and have nothing more to lose.”

At the sudden death of her grandfather, Ona’s pain transports her to mystical Luenah—a place of infinite possibilities, free of turf wars and other ills that plague the earthly dimension she lives in. In Luenah, where her grandfather awaits her, Ona learns she is an Eri, one bestowed with unique intuitive and spiritual gifts passed down from generation-to-generation.

On her eighteenth birthday, she returns to Luenah and is handed a box to deposit her ‘exchange’ for love and happiness—her great desires.

Burdened by her quest, Ona crosses paths with danger and heartbreak as the two men that love her dearly are viciously pitted against each other. As evil looms, she learns that dreams carry a hefty price, and no one is who they seem. Now, she must unmask the villain and save the one she loves, even at the risk of losing everything she holds dear.

Set against the backdrop of two warring towns, Oby Aligwekwe’s Young Adult debut—told from the viewpoint of her main character—is inspired by her West African heritage, fables, and spiritual beliefs. Ona’s journey reveals the power of choice, the true source of happiness, and, most importantly, the transformation one must go through to realize and eventually occupy their purpose.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
“How did I—I mean when did I become an Eri?” I asked wide-eyed.
“It started several millennia ago when Luenah was restricted to its original inhabitants—a handful of people living in utmost serenity and joy, never growing old or dying from diseases. Everything changed when a wily princess, Ani, found her way in through a portal in an ant hole. When she arrived in Luenah, panting from exertion, our ruler had taken pity and accepted her into our fold. With time, she proved to be loyal and imaginative, wildly so, that she found immense favor in his eyes, but she wanted more.”
“What did she want?” I urged.
“For her people on earth to inhabit Luenah. At the time, the earth was plagued with famine and diseases, and she felt Luenah would provide the respite they needed. As noble as the idea was, it wasn’t feasible.”
“Why not? There’s enough space here for everyone,” I claimed, looking around at the beauty and riches in Luenah.
“There’s enough space,” he agreed. “But there is no room in Luenah for conflict and turmoil. Look at Ide and Ntebe. See what has become of them.”
I nodded once, and he continued.
“A few years passed, and Ani presented her plea again. She threatened to expose the ant hole so her people could enter if our ruler failed to grant even a few ‘chosen ones’ access to live here.”
“Did they fall for it?” I asked, my heart beating in anticipation.
“The negotiation was tough, but they later struck a deal. Ani was permitted to select a handful of good earthly humans to visit Luenah. These humans, called Eris, were bestowed gifts to be passed on to chosen ones in their future generations, and they were assigned missions to help the earth regain its balance.”
“So, Eris are born?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Excerpt from Chapter 1 of What We Bury (Detective Madison Knight series)

“She’s dead.”

Those two words brought Madison Knight to 982 Hillcrest Drive in the middle of a Saturday afternoon in March. It was a quiet neighborhood in the south end of Stiles, a city of about three hundred sixty thousand, and it had been her real estate agent, Estelle Robins, who’d called. When Madison saw the name on caller ID, she’d assumed Estelle had found the perfect place for Madison and her boyfriend, Troy Matthews. Boy, had she been mistaken.

Madison parked in the driveway, admiring the raised bungalow with its grayish-brown brick and beige siding. It couldn’t be older than fifteen years. The front door was under a small overhang, and that’s where Estelle was standing, her arms wrapped around herself as if she were cold, but the temperature today was unusually warm. Some of the more northern states would envy their spring-like weather in early March.

Madison got out of the car and approached Estelle. She was normally the picture of calm and put-togetherness, but her hair was frizzed around her heart-shaped face, and her eyes were wet and wide. Her brown eyeshadow was smudged beneath her right eye, but her mascara had stayed in place.

“Omigod, Madison. I didn’t know who else to call, but you’ll know what to do.”

“You did the right thing.” Madison was a Major Crimes detective with the Stiles Police Department. Troy could have tagged along, as he was also a detective for the department, but his primary role was leader of a SWAT team. Solving murders was her thing. “Where is she?”

“In the shed. I’ll take you there.” Estelle led the way to a side gate next to the garage. Her hand was shaking as she worked the latch.

Madison followed Estelle down a concrete sidewalk toward the backyard. “How did you find her?”

“There’s supposed to be an open house.” Estelle spoke over her shoulder. “I was making sure the property looked good.” Estelle stopped and hoisted a chain-link gate at the end of the walk that was hinged on the fence and wedged against the brick of the garage. To the right was a deck, and ahead was a manageable

yard. The rear of the lot was framed by mature cedars and a chain-link fence. There was another gate back there, and it appeared open.

Estelle pointed to a shed with a concrete foundation and beige siding. It was about twelve feet wide and twenty feet long.

“She’s in there.” Estelle shivered. “I can’t believe this is happening.”

Interview:

Author @Carolyn_Arnold Interviews Detective Madison Knight

To celebrate the release of Carolyn Arnold’s latest crime novel What We Bury, the next instalment in her Detective Madison Knight series, I’m sharing an interview that she conducted with her character Detective Madison Knight.

If Carolyn is new to you, she’s an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has four continuing fiction series—Detective Madison Knight, Brandon Fisher FBI, McKinley Mysteries, and Matthew Connor Adventures—and has written over thirty books. She’s even getting ready to announce a fifth series starring Detective Amanda Steele. Her genre diversity offers her readers everything from cozy to hard-boiled mysteries, and thrillers to action adventures.

Carolyn’s intention is to touch the hearts of millions with her books, to entertain, inspire, and empower. She currently lives near London, Ontario, with her husband and beagles and is a member of Crime Writers of Canada and Sisters in Crime.

With the author’s introduction done, let’s find out more about Detective Madison Knight! (Black text is Carolyn; red is Madison.)

Madison, I need you to cooperate with me for one minute. Okay?

Sure, but let’s make it quick. I have murders to solve… I always have murders to solve.

Guess I keep you busy, but people are curious about you, what makes you tick and—

What makes me tick? Really? You know I’m not a huge fan of cliches.

Yeah, I guess I do. Something to do with your mother.

You should know.

Okay. Let’s get on with this then.

Please.

So you’re a detective?

Yes, in Major Crimes with the Stiles Police Department.

You can investigate kidnappings, but you’re primarily assigned murder cases. What made you want to be a detective?

My grandfather was gunned down while celebrating his retirement from the police force when out to dinner with my grandmother. Due to this I never met him. At least the killer was apprehended and sent to prison, but it was his father he sought retaliation for. My grandfather had sent the shooter’s dad to prison due to his working for the Russian Mafia. I had a new enemy from the moment I heard the story—the mob—and I had finding justice became my purpose in life.

What is your greatest secret during this investigation?

It has to do with the blasted mob. They need to get out of my city. Better yet, cease to exist all together—except for behind bars. As I said, they are my enemy and they’ve ensnared and corrupted fellow Stiles PD officers. I’m determined to expose them as well. After all, they don’t deserve the badge, and I consider it my duty to clean up my city. But in doing so…well, I do my best to keep this side mission, which I’ve taken up with quite the fervor recently, from the man I love, Troy. He also happens to be with Stiles PD and is a SWAT team leader. He can handle himself, but I just want to protect him, I guess you could say.

So that’s how you justify keeping your little “side mission” from Troy?

Yes.

Guess that’s all you’re going to say on that subject… What scares you the most?

Never thought I’d say this but losing the man I love. That and having any harm coming to him or my family or friends.

What was your biggest challenge during the investigation in What We Bury?

There is some trouble on the homefront… Not just because I’m sort of living a secret life. I was positive that Troy was going to propose to me a few weeks ago, but he never did, and nothing’s been said about marriage since. I’m starting to question our relationship and my ability to read people.

I’m surprised that given all that goes on, you chose the status of your relationship with Troy as the biggest challenge…

He means a lot to me. So does my best friend Cynthia, which brings up another challenge thrown at me. She recently married another detective with Stiles PD Major Crimes, but the man who stood up for him at the wedding is a corrupt cop. He has to go, and I need to expose him, but how do I do that without hurting Cyn? It gets a little ugly…

I’m sure it does… So what would you say is your greatest weakness?

I guess it would depend who you ask. Terry would say it’s my black-and-white approach. People who can’t handle a strong woman would say my tenacity is my greatest weakness. Personally, I’d say that’s one of my greatest strengths. As for weakness, I would say that I care too much. It makes me vulnerable and I hate being hurt.

I can see that. All right, how about some fun questions… If you were starving and needed to eat something what would you reach for?

Do you need to ask? A Hershey’s chocolate bar!

What’s your favorite takeout or delivery? I know you love Greek food and pizza…

Picking a favorite among Greek food, Chinese food, or pizza… I can’t do it.

If a person were to send you a bouquet, what flower would you want it to include?

I’m not really a romantic…or at least that’s what I’m telling you. Ahem. But I’ve recently come to discover a new “flower.”

This comes about during your investigation in What We Bury?

It does.

A hint?

What’s chocolate in a vase with a red bow?

A bouquet of Hershey’s bars?

You’ll have to read the “investigation file” to find out.

But this mysterious bouquet, it came from Troy?

You know it.

I know you’re busy—as we’ve established, but just a few quick questions before I let you be. What can you tell us about your investigation in What We Bury?

I got a call from my real estate agent when she was preparing for an open house. She found a body in the shed on the property. I get there and it turns out it was a woman who had been stabbed. There’s no ID, no phone, no purse, and no sign of the murder weapon. But the letters GB are written in blood. I need to find out what they mean, if anything, and who the woman was and who could have killed her.

Sounds like there’s a lot to uncover there.

Yep. And, of course, I take on even more.

The Mafia and corrupt cops?

Uh-huh. And then you throw a couple things at me about midway through! What was that about? And then at the end… (Deep breath) Let’s just say what happened has changed my life forever.

Sometimes things are outside of my control, Madison… And I’m sorry, but I promise you’ll grow and become even strong emotionally. Our life experiences make us who we are.

Not sure I want to get all touchy-feely. You said you had a few questions… So two more?

Yeah. Uh, now that you finished the investigation in What We Bury, what do you think is next?

I’m sure it’s another murder—and there’s still more work to be done to clean up Stiles. Will I ever finish?

If I told you, that would be a spoiler.

Hardy-har, as Terry would say.

Very true… And if we wanted to read more about your investigation, where would we go?

What We Bury is available from popular retailers.

Right. I’ll make sure to include those at the end of this interview.

This is the end—right? I mean you said a few questions and that usually means three…

Fine, I give up. (Smile) Thank you for your time, Madison.

Uh-huh.

If you’re interested in reading What We Bury, it’s available in ebook, paperback, hardcover, and large print edition.

Katie Garrett is madly in love with her dashing firefighter husband, Andy. When he is diagnosed with cancer, their entire world is turned upside down. Andy clumsily tries to protect Katie from the truth by not telling her, but her fear — and his increasing pain and tumultuous emotions — only feed her deep-seated insecurities, as they fight for Andy’s life and for their marriage.

While the fire station and its camaraderie are Andy’s refuge, station officer Lt. Mike Bentley wages a vendetta against Andy, making Andy more determined to avoid revealing weakness of any kind. In spite of Bentley’s despising Andy, the C shift crew rally to support Andy until events take a downward turn.

As she discovers Andy’s cancer was caused by exposure to lethal chemicals while on duty, Katie navigates the treacherous maze of uncertainty and grief to emerge a stronger, more confident woman who represents her husband and the fire service as an advocate for firefighter safety and protection.

Firefighters face a myriad of dangers, but the invisible dangers – his past, her fears — can pose the greatest threat of all. Will courage, duty, and love be enough to save Andy from these unseen threats? Will he come to recognize the far-reaching impact his life has on others? If the worst should happen, would his greatest legacy be the love of the fire service or the love for his wife? In the end, the unforeseen might have the greatest significance of all.

Read an Excerpt

“Anybody recognize this guy?” Andy asked, pointing to Hedrick who waved with a silly grin. The children laughed and nodded. “Well, Hedrick is going to put on the rest of the equipment we wear when we’re fighting a fire,” Andy said with a nod at Hedrick.

“First, he’s going to put on his hood. This protects the back of our necks and ears.” Hedrick pulled the hood up over his head and made sure it was securely in place before slipping on his mask. “The mask helps protect our faces and our eyes from smoke and ashes. When the tank is connected to the mask through this place here,” Andy continued, pointing to the regulator, “we can breathe fresh air from the air tank on our back.”

Hedrick fastened the hose and clicked the breathing regulator onto its place on the front of the mask. Immediately, the sound of his raspy breathing could be heard. “Finally,” Andy said, “his helmet goes on, and he buckles the strap under his chin. The helmet protects our head from anything heavy that might be falling,” Andy finished as Hedrick pulled on his gloves. As Hedrick stood in front of the group, his breathing loud and scratchy through the regulator, the children’s eyes went wide with wonder, or possibly fear.

Andy clapped Hedrick on the shoulder. “Remember the goofy-looking guy with an even goofier smile we saw just a few minutes ago? Let’s think a minute . . .”

Andy looked at the unsure looks on their faces. “Do you remember that guy who put on all this equipment to protect himself when he’s fighting a fire?” A few heads nodded tentatively. “Well, that’s the same goofy guy on the inside of all this gear,” Andy said, resting his arm on Hedrick’s shoulder. Hedrick reached over and playfully thumped Andy on the arm, and the children laughed.

Andy smiled. “Show them what we’re talking about, Hedrick.” Hedrick removed his helmet and then unhooked the hose from the mask to the air tank and finally, pulled the mask and hood off, which lifted his hair into spikes all over his head. Hedrick smiled his goofiest smile and waved. The children broke into cheers and applause as Hedrick bowed with a flourish.

Excerpt:

The band takes the stage again. Before the first note Jon says, “This is for Gillian.” He beams his sexy smile at me. I immediately recognize the opening riff to Dark Energy, the song he wrote for me about how I turned my screwed up life around.

Dark Energy lyrics

Shadows always lurk into the voids.

The great destroyer follows me.

A powerful force

Rips apart my universe

As I want it to be.

Dreams they shatter across the sky

Like shooting stars flying by.

Give it up. Throw it away.

One less win. Another day.

In this dark energy.

Find someone else to conquer.

What does it mean this dark energy?

Dark energy won’t control my fate.

Why do I deserve this dark energy?

I create my own history.

Don’t push this, this on me.

Tipping the balance

Shed some light and set it free

This dark energy.

Find someone else to conquer.

What does it mean this dark energy?

Dark energy won’t control my fate.

I do not deserve this dark energy.

Earl of Brecken

by Aubrey Wynne

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A seductive Welsh earl on the brink of ruin. A wealthy cit in search of a hero.

Miss Evelina Franklin reads too many romance novels. She’s certain a handsome duke—or dashing highwayman—is in her future. In the meantime, Evie entertains herself with the admirers vying for her fortune.

The Earl of Brecken needs cash. His late father left their Welsh estate in ruin, and his mother will not let him rest until it is restored to its former glory. Notorious for his seductive charm, he searches the ballrooms for a wealthy heiress. His choices are dismal until he meets Miss Franklin. Guileless and gorgeous with an enormous dowry, she seems the answer to his prayers. Until his conscience makes an unexpected appearance.

Excerpt:

London, 1819

Lifting his glass, Madoc’s well-practiced smile returned. “Here’s to long, dull days of leisure. May I never take boredom for granted again.”

Sunderland guffawed. “By all means, enjoy them if you can before you become earl. After that, your days may not be filled with intrigue, but you will certainly stay occupied. My estate, properties, and seat in the Lords demand much of my time.”

His friend’s statement gave him pause. “I hadn’t really thought about the future, in that sense, but you’re right enough. I’ve been trained for the title and know what is expected of me. Yet, having the responsibility solely on my shoulders scares the hell out of me.” Madoc sighed. “If I fail an assignment, my disappearance will cause little harm. Another man will take my place, and the task will be accomplished. But making decisions that affect the lives of my tenants, people whose livelihood could be crushed by a man’s whim…”

The earl nodded. “The obligation can be heavy at times, but it’s our duty to maintain our inheritance, our family name. Those who tend the land and the animals, work within our abodes, are all an integral part of the system. Treat them fairly, and with the dignity they deserve, and you’ll do well. It’s that mutual understanding and common goal to make life better that will bond you to them.”

“Blast, if you don’t sound like my father.” Madoc laughed. “Next you’ll be telling me it’s time to find a wife. Speaking of, how is Grace?”
