Her teenage sister has run away. It’s her fault. And on her watch.

Shyla thought she was doing the right thing by helping her teenage sister get a little freedom. She never expected she’d bolt on her. Desperate to keep their mom from discovering she has a missing daughter, Shyla sets out to find her wayward sister.

A fluke encounter gives Shyla a clue. Only she gets a lot more than she bargained for. She finds her sister, but she gets pulled into doing a heist. An impossible heist. And not just any heist but that of stealing her mom’s million-dollar jewelry. Ones that recently arrived, with no explanation.

Damien is a good guy running from an awful past. When his brother ends up in the hospital, Damien is determined to stop the one man who has and is destroying their lives—their father. Damien will break all of his promises, even steal, if it will end their father’s control.

Shyla and Damien find themselves thrown together, not trusting each other but not having any choice. They will have to work together if Damien is going to stop his father once and for all. And if Shyla is going to protect her family. An impossible crime that will bring them surprises they didn’t see coming.

Can they catch a thief by being a thief?

Book 1

Who is sending them out? And who wants them back at all costs?

“…fast-paced and kept me guessing. I like a mystery enveloped with family secrets and jewel thieves. I want more, and I want to know the secrets. I will be excited to read the second novel…” Author Christine H-Jackson

“You’re sick. You destroyed Jordie. Or tried to, but he turned you down. Isn’t that why you hurt him, ’cause he didn’t want any more to do with you? He was getting out. But you couldn’t lose your number one thief. He’s been clean for a whole year.”

The man chuckled. “He’s mine. One day, he’s gonna slip out of this world.”

“What do you want?”

“There’s something I need you to get. Jordie couldn’t do it. You saw what happened to him. If you do like him and ignore me, you will end up in the same place. Or worse.”

Damien felt sick, but he didn’t know what he was going to do. This man had destroyed his life. As much as he wanted to turn tail and run, it was his turn to step up and protect his brother. Their father would stop at nothing, even kill Jordie. It appeared he almost had.

“Fine. What do you want to steal?”

The door to the apartment opened. Damien’s eyes widened as he met Shyla’s whose eyebrows couldn’t have shot any higher. Thankfully, her hands were full of bags of groceries and trying to balance her purse and keys. He rushed over to her, grabbing the door, and stepping between her and it.

“Smart boy,” His father was at happy with his question. Shyla was going to be another matter.

Shyla hustled past him, almost throwing the bags of groceries onto the counter. She whirled around, staring him down. He leaned against the door. He at least needed a chance to explain.

“No. I just know you. You haven’t changed at all. All you’ve ever done your entire life is steal, steal, steal, and steal. So, what is it?” He waved at Shyla with his hand while making pleading facial expressions that she give him a minute and then he’d explain.

“Something a little bit different. It’s a beautiful set of jewelry.”

Knight Light

Knight Light

by Claudia Riess

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

On March 24, 1946, World Chess Champion, Alexander Alekhine, is found dead in his hotel room in Estoril, Portugal.  The cause of death remains mired in controversy when, three-quarters of a century later, a letter of his that could rock the art world is unearthed in a routine home renovation in upstate New York.  The letter is addressed to a person of international repute and offers information about art works looted during the German occupation of Paris.
When the young man in possession of the letter is brutally murdered, his mentor, art history professor Harrison Wheatley and Harrison’s sleuthing partner, art magazine editor Erika Shawn, hurl themselves into the dual mission of tracking down both the killer and the looted art.
The hunt takes the couple to far flung locations, and as the stakes rise along with the murder count, it looks like the denouement will take place far from the comforts of home.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
The door to the master bedroom was wide open, yet seeing the tableau of nanny and infant locked in a look he read as mutual devotion, Harrison felt obliged to rap on the door before disturbing the scene.
Kate was standing in profile, cradling Lucas in her arms.  She had on a form-fitting tank top and tights, and her mop of flaxen hair was reined into a high pony tail.  When she broke gaze with Lucas to look toward Harrison, her expression bore the remnants of affection.  “Ready, Daddy?” she asked, looping him into their orbit.
“Absolutely,” he said, striding toward them.
As Kate handed Lucas to him, Harrison was moved by the tenderness of her movements, the glimmer of regret in her relinquishment.  Unlike Kate, he held Lucas at arm’s length, wary of the soiled diaper.  Carrying him to the changing table—the infant surprisingly unperturbed by the awkward means of transport—it suddenly occurred to Harrison that a woman like Kate would make an agreeable match for his son.  Beautiful, intelligent, caring, what more could a father wish for?  It was not until Lucas had been placed on the changing table and began wriggling in protest did Harrison realize the hilarious prematurity of the notion, along with his own libidinous detachment from it.  Equally amusing.
He could not help but grin as he un-velcroed Lucas’s diaper.  Kate, meanwhile, rushed to his side to hand him a baby wipe from the shelf under the table. “Let me do it,” he said, as their hands brushed against each other at the wipe’s retrieval.  Kate whisked away her hand, with a smile inadequately masking unease.
What was she thinking? That he was about to make an Arnold Schwarzenegger move on her?  Think again.  He admired her body the way he admired Renoir’s Bather.  Skin deep.  He wiped down Lucas’s bottom and deposited the soiled items into the bin designed for that purpose.  With one hand on Lucas’s belly to stabilize him, he reached with the other for a fresh diaper on the lowest shelf of the changing table.  Kate stood right next to him, her hands poised above Lucas like a priest about to deliver a benediction, in case she had to come to the infant’s rescue.
Erika stepped into the room.  “How’s it going?” she asked evenly, not quite as impressed by the tableau before her as Harrison had been of his.
“Going great,” Kate answered.  On such a fair complexion, even the tiniest blush was visible.
“Your husband’s doing just fine,” she said, stepping away from her charge, considering the critical stage of Mission Diaper had passed.
“When expectations are low, every minor advance is a major victory,” Harrison said, struggling with the diaper alignment.
“Let me help you,” Erika said, coming near.
“He doesn’t want to be helped,” Kate said with a little laugh.  “Take it from me.”
Take it from you? Erika sniped within.  “You’re right,” she said, straining to be her better self.
“There we are!” Harrison declared, as he stuck closed the second pair of diaper flaps.  “A little awry, but good as new.”
Lucas, who had been intermittently releasing grunted complaints, suddenly launched a full-throated protest.
Kate started for the bedroom door.  “You’ll want your privacy,” she said.  “I’ll be in my room studying.  Call me whenever, okay?”  Without asking, she knew to shut the door on her way out.
Erika lifted Lucas from the changing table and immediately his cries became anticipatory.  She sat down in the rocking chair and raised her shirt, then snapped open one of the panels of her nursing bra and held Lucas to her breast.  “Kate’s a wonder, isn’t she?” she tested.
Harrison assumed the question was rhetorical and didn’t respond to it.  Besides, looking at her prompted a response to a thought he had had earlier, about certain forms of admiration being only skin deep. He approached the rocking chair and dropped to one knee before her.
She was nonplussed.  “Are you going to propose again?”
He didn’t answer that question either.  He slid his hands along her outer thighs, stopping when he reached her hips.  He held her there, just like that, saying nothing for a moment, just looking.  “To the bone,” he said finally.
She knew it was a declaration of love, but it seemed to have come from out of the blue.  No matter.  Its sincerity put her needling questions to rest.
{This Tale is True}
{This Tale is True}
by Deborah Adams
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
They don’t make goddesses like they used to….
For eons they ruled, but modern times have been rough on the ancient deities— their temples collapsed, their worshippers wandered off, and their purposes were made redundant by industry and technology. And the Fates aren’t finished with them yet.
Mere days before the annual renewal of their immortality is to occur, the goddess of youth disappears. Without her and her restorative nectar, time and age will catch up with the goddesses. In the blink of an eye, they will shrivel and die, leaving the world to fend for itself, unless a skeptical mortal can find a way to save both worlds.
combines the humor one expects from Adams with magical realism and a dash of literary fiction, resulting in a boisterous read that pushes back against the boundaries of genre.
“Deborah Adams offers goddesses in peril and a protagonist who dares all to save the immortals in a wild, wacky, and wonderful romp. Imaginative, creative, fabulous fiction.” ~ Carolyn Hart, author of the otherworldly Bailey Ruth series
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt

There was no time or reason for social conventions, so Juno got right to the point. “Juventas is gone,” she said simply. “No one knows her whereabouts.”

As Fama had explained, this was already common knowledge throughout Olympus and therefore failed to bring the panicked cries of disbelief and horror Juno had expected. Instead there was silence as the assembled goddesses waited for orders. It hadn’t occurred to them that Juno was depending on them for help.

“I can hardly believe it myself,” Juno went on, misreading their silence. “And yet it’s true. Someone has made away with that bright spirit, the soul of youth and grace.”

”Are you sure she hasn’t gone on vacation?” Ceres asked snidely. “And why does a wandering child necessitate such fuss and bother? No one even mentions my daughter’s regular disappearance.”

“Without Juventas,” Juno reminded them, “we are unable to complete the rebirthing. That ought to be reason enough for even you, Ceres, to sit up and take notice.”

“No one understands how a mother suffers,” Ceres whined. {Half-sprouted tulips in Houston halted their ascent toward the sun.}

“We know it’s difficult for you,” Iris leaned over and patted Ceres’ pudgy hand, “but right now we must hold ourselves together and focus on solving the immediate problem.”

Ceres moaned as if she might collapse under the weight of her grief. In stark contrast, Juno remained stoic as always, her royal obligations taking precedence over the pain that swelled inside her. “We shall apply our talents to saving ourselves. With only two days until the renewal ceremony, there’s no time to waste. We must find Juventas’ kidnapper and make a deal to retrieve her and her nectar. Otherwise…” The consequences hung liked a honed sword in the air.

“But why would someone abduct your kid?” Ceres asked. “Interfering with the renewal ceremony would be disastrous for us all! A god would have to be crazy!”

“Well, crazy behavior among Olympians isn’t unheard of,” Fama pointed out. “All that in-breeding.”

Juno halted a fireball just before it left her fingertips. It was true that most of her family’s problems resulted from incautious couplings; still, bad habits hardly explained this sort of misbehavior.

The Gospel According to Prissy

The Gospel According to Prissy

by Barbara Casey

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Three Army veteran misfits, a college dropout, an unmotivated high school graduate accused of murder, a controversial warden of a women’s prison, and a little girl with the gift of prophesy – these are the people 31-year-old Lara Kruger invites into her life after suffering a miscarriage, a divorce from an abusive husband, and unemployment.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
The young child skipped through the tall trees and underbrush, unaware of the puddles created by recent rains or the low-lying tree branches and vines that swiped at her coveralls and scratched her bare arms.  Hugging a doll that showed the wear of a favorite toy and a faint smudge of chocolate ice cream, the child pushed forward with determination.  She knew where she wanted to go, and her face showed the intensity and resolve of a person much older than her five years.  The black woman wearing the uniform of a prison guard struggled to keep up with her young charge.  The thick green tangle of natural forest growth and uneven turf was more of a challenge to a woman her size and stature.
The child stopped when she reached a clearing, that place in the woods that wasn’t quite so overgrown and where the wild vegetation had been pressed from previous visits.  In front of her was a tree, magnificent in size, ancient in age.  She had reached her destination.  She called it, quite simply, “the place.”  Quietly, reverently, she approached the tree, reaching out and touching the familiar rough surface and its many irregular crevices.  She squatted where some roots had pushed upward and were now gnarled and covered in bark before extending downward again deep into the soil.  It was between two of these large root formations that the child placed the doll – a throne.  Her hand explored the curvature of one darkened root, first touching the soft green moss, and then the small indented place that held water whenever it rained.  It was moist.  Satisfied, she knelt.  Then, lowering her head and folding her dimpled hands together, she started to pray.
GENRE: Young Adult Urban Fantasy
BLURB:
Long live the me! As Queen of Antrum, I rule an underground realm of demon hunters who love finding new caves. Hey, it’s boring down here; I’m glad they all have a hobby. Per usual, I try to act interested about their latest discovery, but all I hear is “blah blah blah new cavern blah blah blah Forbidden Tombs blah blah blah massive bronze pyramids blah blah blah creepy ticking sounds.” It’s a little odd, but I’m not worried.
My bad.
Suddenly, the Forbidden Tombs burst through the ground in my home realm of Purgatory. Bronze pyramids smash through abandoned buildings and highways, making rush hour a nightmare. Even worse, the metal structures attract tiny lightning bolts called igni, which are my very special supernatural buddies. Within minutes, every last igni gets stolen away.
Now. I’m. Pissed.
Whoever hides inside those pyramids? Time to dust off your mummies and shine up your sarcophagi. Because my husband, Lincoln, and I are breaking in and kicking ass.
EXCERPT:
I stand in a small square room. A heavy iron door looms before me. All around, the walls are lined with intricately-entwined gears and springs. Tiny pieces whirl and tick away at high speed. With each click and swipe, a tiny jolt of worry ricochets down my spine. Sweat beads on my palms.
I’m girl enough to admit it. This scene freaks me out.
No question why, either. This isn’t just any metal portal. It’s Pandora’s Door. As in, the girl didn’t keep a box of nasties. Nope. Instead, something awful lurks behind this very entrance. If I pull on the handle, that magical whatchamacallit gets free. Based on what I’ve learned, the mystery something-something could make everything right again. In other words, my igni would return. I’ll move souls once more. The Great Scala is back. How perfect.
Or I could release an unknown scourge that destroys all the after-realms. Definitely not as cool.
A memory appears. I picture Verus giving me a solemn warning: “No matter how tempting the door may appear, you must step back and walk away.”
It’s logical enough advice. Plus, Verus is an oracle angel. In my experience, she’s right most of the time. Perhaps I should give up. Go home. Play with my kid. Smooch my hottie husband. Get a mocha.
That lasts all of five seconds.
Screw it. I’m going in.
I grasp the handle and pull.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Discussion Topic: Please tell us how you got started writing

Here’s a little something that not many people in my circle of friends know about me; my interest in writing actually started with a love of poetry at an early age.  I remember when my father gave me my first book of poetry; it was a collection by Robert Service.  The pages of my favourite poem in the book soon become tattered and worn from constant reading.  Poetry opened my mind to a new way of being, and to this day I still hold a special place in my heart for it.  Fast forward to today, as I now focus my time creating special children’s books that embody the essence of love and friendship.  Many of these simple poetic gestures learned as a child resonate within the pages I write as an author.  My books are focused on love and friendship, overcoming obstacles and social awareness.

My father recently passed and at his service, as a small personal tribute of the love of poetry that we shared, I recited our favourite poem from the book he gave me as a child, “The Cremation of Sam McGee” by Robert Service.  It brought me full loop to my roots and start as a writer.

Petty Officer Keith Knight sat down across from her.

During his pre-chow brush-down he’d missed a few spots—two silver-dollar pancakes of sand were plastered to the side of his neck. “How you holding up?”

Good question. And one she was in no way going to answer. If she started cataloguing her complaints, she’d pay closer attention to them. “Ready to rock,” she lied. “You?”

“Livin’ the dream.”

She almost smirked at his own lie. Or maybe it was the truth. Despite all the physical abuse he’d endured with the rest of them, there was still something spring-coiled about him, like his body hovered on the edge of exploding into violent action.

“I used to do some really extreme stuff growing up in Jackson, Wyoming,” he told her. “BUD/S is like that, only on speed. Look, Hayes, you got any issues, I want you to come to me right away. Okay?”

Issues? Why was he mentioning that? Had he overheard Hairy Arms being a pervy jerk to her? She shot her focus over to the creep.

Knight caught the look. He glanced over his shoulder, observed Hairy Arms for a moment, then turned back around. His pupils seemed to narrow in on her. “You need to report something?”

“Nope.”

Knight watched her. “Don’t try to be Superwoman and wait till you’re on the brink of breaking before coming to me.”

“Got it. Right. No sweat.” She downed a few glugs of milk. “Thing is, Knight, I don’t recall hearing myself ring out this morning.”

He exhaled. “You’re taking this the wrong way.”
